Around SBN: Miikka Kiprusoff Wins 300th Game, Buffalo Crushes Boston

Man, I hope the officiating is better

in the AFC championship game.  If this is an all-star crew, then some one needs to go back and recount.  How many facemask penalties can a crew miss on the first Pats drive of the game? They missed 3 of them, three plays in a row.  And then another obvious one on third down right before the half that would have given us a first down.  The first Brady incompletion should have been pass interference.  If this is the crew we have next week, then the NFL should be ashamed.  It couldn't have been more apparent who the refs were wanting to win tonight(and it wasn't the Pats).

I wouldn't say the crew wanted one team to win
Just that they were pretty bad, and mostly one-sided. I wasn't happy, but it could have just been a bad night for this crew. They called two Patriots games earlier this season, and I've seen them once or twice otherwise, and they seemed pretty solid most of the time.

ehh...
I didn't thing they blew any huge calls during the game.  They missed a couple of face mask calls vs the  Jags, but other then that I thought it was decent.  Nothing they did was game breaking.  One call I thought was kinda iffy, but for the most part they let the teams play the game, and in the end the best team came out on top.

We tend to agree on much, but ..
.. four personal fouls on New England and one on Jacksonville does not appear either even or "letting them play." They let Jacksonville play.

But, I'll give you this much: 11 total penalties isn't too bad.

For the record:

Penalties on New England:

  1. Facemask (15 yards)
  2. Encroachment
  3. Chop block
  4. Unnecessary roughness
  5. Unnecessary roughness
  6. Holding (interception return)

Penalties on Jacksonville:

  1. Offensive holding
  2. False start
  3. False start
  4. Roughing the passer
  5. Holding (kick return)

true
And both unnecessary roughness penalties were ticky-tack at best.  The one called against Harrison (might have been called against someone else, but it was meant to be on Harrison) for the hit out of bounds was COMPLETE BS.  The player was still in bounds when the hit was layed out.  I was shouting for Bill to throw the challenge flag on the play just to put the ref on the spot about a horrible call.

it was
terrible officiating, and there were a couple bad calls against the jags too, but the worst ones seemed to fall all over the pats. Dont really know what else to say.

It wasn't that bad
but I definitely don't want them reffing next week. Hopefully Mike Carey can be brought in to ref. He is consistently excellent in his calls and knows to let the players play. Any one know who is reffing next week? Hopefully not Ed Hocchuli.

Mike Carey called the Packers-Seahawks yesterday
Generally in the playoffs, officials don't call games in consecutive weeks, so Carey is probably out. I'll check up on who called Wild Card games, because those are likely candidates for head referee. I know Hocchuli did call one of those.

I'm not sure, but I think the conference title games and the Super Bowl have the "all-star" officiating crews.

Also in general, they don't announce officiating crews (except the Super Bowl) very far in advance. If it is available, not many outlets report it, because I often have a very difficult time finding out more than a day before the game, if even then.

Officials who called Wild Card games
Walt Anderson called Buccaneers-Giants
Walt Coleman called Seahawks-Redskins
Scott Green called Steelers-Jaguars
Ed Hochuli called Chargers-Titans

Anderson's crew also called Patriots-Ravens (Week 13)
Coleman's crew also called Patriots-Browns (Week 5)
Hochuli's crew also called Patriots-Chargers (Week 2)
Green's crew also called Patriots-Bills (Week 3)

Is neck-twisting a penalty?
I'm surprised Welker got up and walked away after that one.
Keep the faith!
