Niners Nation Q&A
Hey folks, this is Fooch from Niners Nation, your friendly SB Nation 49ers blog. Our sites have begun a fun little idea where the opposition blog will come over and answer questions directly from the fans. We've traditionally done the 5 questions, but this allows for everybody to get involved and come up with as many questions as they could possibly want answered. First though, I thought I'd give you a quick rundown on the new and (still TBD on how much) improved 49ers.
Offense
Add 49ers fans to the growing crowd that finds Mike Martz both incredibly brilliant and incredibly frustrating. Mike Martz appears to be continuing his magic in turning J.T (John Thomas/Just Touchdowns/Just Turnovers) O'Sullivan into a more than serviceable starting quarterback. The 49ers offense has been clearly improved from last year, although when you hit rock bottom there usually is nowhere to go but up. The primary issue most people have with the offense right now is the fact that J.T. O'Sullivan is getting absolutely killed by defensive pressure, as he is currently on pace for a record-tying 76 sacks. There are 3 reasons for this problem. First, the Martz offense is prone to a lot of sacks, just ask Jon Kitna. Second, the offensive line has struggled at times in pass protection. Third, JTO has shown a consisten ability to hold onto the ball for too long trying to make plays.
The primary strength of the offense is the Frank Gore, not exactly a shocking revelation. Anybody who could put up 1,100 rushing yards last season with that offense deserves a medal. However, he slimmed down a bit to take on the extra load a Martz-style offense which would normally predicate. This has led to the second frustration: 49ers fans desperately want Gore to get more touches. Even though New Orleans won in pretty close to a blowout, Gore still only touched the ball 19 times (including a 2-pt conversion).
For the first time in many years the 49ers actually field what could logically be called a full stable of wide receivers. Isaac Bruce is growing a little long in the tooth but knows this offense like the back of his hand and has shown a knack for still making some big plays. The third frustration on offense comes from the fact that Vernon Davis, selected 6th overall in 2006, is struggling to take the step from decent tight end to elite tight end. The physical skills are absolutely ridiculous, but he has struggled at times learning the offense and getting in sync with O'Sullivan.
Defense
The 49ers defense was supposed to be a strength this year. While parts of the defense have met expectations, there have remained some serious holes. Over the last two offseasons, the 49ers have heavily invested in the likes of Justin Smith and Nate Clements, as well as spending high draft picks on guys like Patrick Willis. Thus far, those guys have not been the issue. While the high profile guys have taken care of business, the rest of the defense has struggled, with last week's loss to New Orleans being a solid blue print of how to defeat the 49ers.
The 49ers have been running primarily nickel and dime packages with only 4 down linemen rushing the quarterback. Mike Nolan fears the big play and figures he can get enough of a pass rush and run stoppage from the down linemen and two linebackers. Against bad teams, he has been right. Against good teams, he has been wrong. The big package has led to a soft belly open to the run. At the same time, the pass rush has not been sufficient and if you give guys like Drew Brees and Matt Hasselbeck any sort of time, they'll pick you apart. The question is whether Matt Cassel will as well.
Alright, I could go on forever, but I'd rather open it up for questions, so I can address what you guys are specifically interested in. Also, I'm going to let my own readers know about this thread so they can respond to your questions as well. I certainly can't claim a monopoly on 49ers information. So, fire away.

rookies
Hey Fooch, I realize the season is still young but I’m wondering what you’ve noticed from the current batch of 49ers rookies? Any of them looking like they might become elite players? Any looking to be busts? What’s your preliminary “gut feeling” about this past year’s San Fran draft crop?

rookies
It would be easy to simply call this class a bust because none of them have made an impact this regular season. Aside from Josh Morgan (discussed below), none of the draft picks was really expected to make a much of an impact heading into the regular season. They drafted a couple of offensive linemen that are being groomed for the future. They drafted Kentwan Balmer in the first round and don’t seem to have a spot for him yet or even a specific idea where he’ll end up. He’s likely a defensive end but could conceivably be beefed into a nose tackle.
I think 3rd round pick Reggie Smith and 6th round pick Josh Morgan are the two guys who could make a decent impact this season. Morgan had a phenomenal preseason before suffering a staph infection that caused him to lose 15 pounds. The 49ers had numerous WR injuries in the preseason so Morgan got most of the first team reps and developed a solid rapport with JTO before suffering the infection. He has seen playing time thus far in the regular season and if Bryant Johnson remains hurt, Morgan could finally make a decent impact.
Reggie Smith hasn’t gotten much playing time but an injury to Shawntae Spencer could lead to a little more playing time. However, Tarell Brown (drafted in 2007) is ahead of him and getting the first opportunity.
I have a sinking feeling this class could end up as a bust, but for now I’m willing to give it 3 seasons. No expectations this season, something decent from some of these guys next year and full-on starting in year 3. We’ll see how it plays out.

coaching
News around here has been centering on the Niners Mike Martz-led offense. How happy is Niners Nation with Head Coach Mike Nolan?

Nolan
I think in general people like Mike Nolan but most everybody has some problem with him one way or another. Nolan has brought a sense of discipline to the 49ers that seemed to be missing under Dennis Erickson and even at times under Steve Mariucci.
The negatives though, would be some of Nolan’s gameday decisions and his communication issues. While I might be mistaken I can honestly only remember one game where Mike Nolan did not use all his timeouts with more than 2 minutes left in a given half. I’m sure there are some but I honestly can’t remember them.
The communication issues seemed to deal mostly with the Alex Smith. Now that he’s on the IR Nolan’s communication problems don’t seem to be much of an issue. In fact, one positive has been the way he’s worked with Mike Martz and particularly how he basically handed the offense over to Martz and really doesn’t interfere.

I'll go ahead and throw up a response, I'm sure Fooch's is forthcoming.
I cant speak for everyone at Niners Nation, but the feeling seems to be a positive one. He’s done a lot for this team defensively, and we’ll see in the near future if what he’s done has paid off, if this draft class is paying off, etc. I’m happy with him now because he’s acknowledged that he’s more defensive oriented, and pretty much gave Martz full reign. He got an offensive coordinator to bolster his weaknesses, and that’s admirable.
I tend to ramble, let me just say that I’m a Nolan guy, and I’d like to see him stick around for a few more years. (Another factor is the team really seems to like the guy. You’ll hear many of the players say “I’m a Nolan guy, through and through.”)

Smith
Sorry to bring up what may be a sore point but we here have a sudden interest in QBs…
Do you believe Alex Smith is done as a 49er? As a NFL QB? Was he pushed too hard too early, and can the coaching staff share blame for his demise?

Alex Smith
I’d say it’s 99% likely Alex Smith is finished as a 49er. He has a huge raise due in his contract for 2009 and 2010 and the 49ers will not pay a backup that kind of money (I believe $9M and $20M give or take). And I don’t see him agreeing to less money to stick around because it’s been a pretty toxic situation for him. Who’s to blame for his lack of success in San Francisco? I could go on forever, but some of the popular picks include:
1) having a different offensive coordinator every year of his career
2) He ran the spread option offense at Utah, which is not conducive to turning into an NFL QB (see Tebow, Tim in a year or two)
3) He lacks some of the physical skills to be a starter
4) Lack of confidence – JT O’Sullivan exudes a cockiness that may be annoying in real life, but is necessary for your starting QB – We never felt that with Alex
5) Small hands – people enjoy throwing that one out there and it’s become a running punchline now
6) Troy Aikman and a few others aside, the number of QBs thrown into the starting situation in year 1 don’t do so well – Some will have stretches of good play, but seem to fail in the end
7) Too many injuries to get some consistent performances
Can he succeed in the NFL? I think so. I honestly think if Norv Turner had stuck around and the offensive line had performed in 2007 like it did in 2006 he would have taken the next step in his QB evolution. I think the perfect situation for him would be going to a place with an established QB and just sit and learn from the QB and from the same offensive coordinator for multiple years.
People try and compare him to Aaron Rodgers, but the minute Rodgers went to Green Bay that comparison was dead. Rodgers sat for 3 years learning from one of the all-time greats and stepped in to a quality team. Alex Smith was thrown to the wolves on some god-awful offensive teams. No comparison whatsoever.
I wish Smith had succeeded in San Francisco (and not just because my #11 jersey is pretty much useless now). Assuming he leaves after this year I really hope he finds success in the NFL.

Top 3 acquisitions for 2008
From a Niners’ fan perspective, give us your top 3 2008 acquisitions, and why, for 2008. They can be draftee or FA.

acquisitions
- by a long shot: Justin Smith – Smith lines up at six of the defense positions of the 3-4/4-3 (just not Patrick Willis’s mike position). In a given game Smith might not secure a ton of tackles or sacks but he makes a major impact. He forces fumbles, creates pressure leading to sacks and even has a nice INT to his credit. Money very well spent
#2: Isaac Bruce – The veteran was the reason we beat Seattle in week 2 with a vintage Bruce performance. He brings a veteran guidance to the younger players and has developed a fun combative relationship with the local media.
#3: Bryant Johnson – He hasn’t blown up as the #1 receiver he thinks he is but he was the most consistent performance over the first 3 weeks among the WR corp. The receiving corp has been one of the biggest weaknesses of the Nolan era so hopefully the combination of Johnson and Bruce will be a significant upgrade.

I'd argue
That Takeo Spikes may be a bigger impact than Johnson. He gives a veteran presence to Willis, and he’s made a few good plays thus far. Yes, I am ignoring the critical kickoff “return” fumble.

spikes
Good call. I was locked into just the early signings, but Spikes has definitely been more important than Johnson to date. He’s moved into the starting lineup and made some important plays so you’re totally right.
