Class is in
We’re about to learn a lot

SF has, by reputation, one of the worst o-lines in the league.
They’re handling 3 first-rounders and pro-bowlers. Their kids and re-treads at receiver are making our kids and re-treads at DB look silly. In a year where we know the d needs to step up, this is poor news indeed.

1st quarter
The O line is not giving Cassel enough time. SF’s D is reading the plays and getting into the backfield. The D has the same problems we’ve been seeing all along – soft middle, not enough pressure and not jamming the line.

Bute more importantly, we need points. We have twice as many yards as the 49ers…

Not a bad half, but a pretty poor opponent.
You can tell when we’re running—at least from the booth view. A 7-yard deep alignment pretty much guarantees it.
I don’t think Cassel so much as glanced at Moss on any of those plays inside the 15. Surprising to me. I’d be so tempted to just loft one up there and let him go get it.
That said, they’re looking pretty good together. Gaffney has pitched in with a couple of key receptions. He’s like the Faulk of the WR’s, in a way. He always seems to know where he is on the field—if he needs another yard he seems to find a way to get it. Welker looks good, but the plays we’re calling for him are seeing poor execution from the rest of the team.
Matt’s still holding the ball a little long. He hasn’t developed Brady’s preternatural gift for pocket awareness (on the other hand, it is preternatural, so it’s hard to blame Cassel too much).
Defensively, we seem to be shaking off the rust a little bit. DBs are still confused half the time, but Mayo and Bruschi look good. Wilfork, Seymour and Warren are underperforming, IMO. I’d like to see something dramatic from Thomas in the second half. You’d think he’d be able to tee off against a line of this caliber.

DOn't know if any of you have been seeing the Colts lately
but it makes me sad Brady’s hurt. This would be the year to run the table. The ponies are struggling.

Yep--for at least one of their scores.
I remember running that a couple of time in High School—and defending it. It’s a challenge for hs’ers because you can’t key off the center. Not sure why these guys struggle with it.
On a related note, our D is still having trouble handling mis-direction runs that include a pulling blocker (whether that’s a lineman, an H or a TE). That cross-buck action is really a problem for us
—holy hell! What a catch by Wes.

And holy shit! He punked out before getting a 1st down. Hope that bookie is making it worth his while.

I forgot to include this in my half-time summary,
but I think we’ve lost LaMont for a good long while. Anytime a guy goes down before someone even touches them, you’ve got a problem.
