Questions about the Bills answered here

Aloha, Pats fans!  Brian Galliford from Buffalo Rumblings, SB Nation's Buffalo Bills blog, reporting for duty.  In an effort to ramp up discussions about this weekend's uber-important meeting between my Bills and your Patriots, MaPatsFan and I decided to exchange FanPosts on our sites today to get our two great blogs a-chattin'.

If you've got questions you'd like answered about the Buffalo Bills, this is the spot to do it.  I will do my best to answer any and all questions you've got, and I'm sure that you'll see some more "Rumblers" making the trip over to the Pulpit to chime in as well.  We'd love to hear from some of you on MaPatsFan's FanPost over at Rumblings, as well.

No limits here, folks.  Mock me for being a Bills fan.  Ask how in the world we allowed ourselves to be duped by a 5-1 start.  Nothing is off limits.  Really looking forward to this matchup this weekend!

The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

Question for ya

Would you say that pretty much every (educated) Bills fan is sold on Edwards as the future QB of the franchise? What’s the general feeling in Buffalo?

by TheBetterFaulk on Nov 5, 2008 2:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If not “every”, then it’s well over 90%. Edwards is the best player we’ve had under center since Jim Kelly; whether or not you or anyone else wants to define that as sad, pathetic or hopeful is completely up to that individual.

The general feeling on Edwards is that he’s got what it takes to be elite, but he’s still got a lot of growing up to do. It’d help if his line helped him out, both in keeping him upright and providing him a competent rushing attack to remove some pressure. He hasn’t had either these last few weeks.

Bills 'rivalry'

Of all the Patriots typical rivals, I like the Bills the most for some reason. I don’t know if it’s born out of pity or something, or that I lived in Rochester for 5 years, but when we’re not competing in games or for a playoff spot, I generally am indifferent about Buffalo, whereas the Jets, Dolphins, and Colts I always rout to lose.

Do you see us as your biggest rival (wishing ill on Belichick can be a seperate thing), or do you think there’s some grudging respect between two fanbases that tend to happily freeze their asses off in the cold to rout for their teams?

or in simpler terms, can we get along, or do I just have too many enemies these days…

"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

I feel the same way

I’ve never really hated the Bills, I want to beat them of course, but I’ve route for them sometimes without it being difficult, the other two teams in our division though are no brains unless it helps the Pats in some way.

That might be a feeling unique to your fan base. I don’t think I’ve ever cheered on the Pats, Dolphins or Jets – unless, as you said, it was beneficial to the Bills. And I didn’t enjoy it when I had to.

I think the relationship you speak of is, in reality, highly one-way. Bills fans don’t like the Pats, and it’s not even close. The fact that you are “indifferent” towards the Bills, coupled with Bills fans’ perspective, probably has a lot to do with the fact that the Pats have mercilessly pounded the Bills for the better part of the last decade. Over the past 7 seasons, you’re 13-1 against us, and you’ve won by an average score of 28-11. So the respective feelings, I believe, stem largely from that dominance (or, in our case, suck).

I grew up with the notion that the Dolphins were Buffalo’s biggest rival – stemming from years of gunslinger stare-downs between Jim Kelly and Dan Marino – and still get the most venom out of that matchup. That might change if the Bills actually start competing with the Patriots; there’s no team I’d rather see the Bills beat right now. That’s not disrespect, it’s respect – beating your team in Foxboro would instantly restore some credibility to a franchise that desperately needs it.

I was always a bit indifferent towards Buffalo

until Drew Bledsoe and then Lawyer Malloy became Bills. I always liked Bledsoe and Malloy and paid a bit more attention to the Bills with those two on the team, wishing them well but wanting to beat them a bit more than I ever cared about before then. The 2003 “31-0 bookends” season will always be a great memory.

Three questions

1) Has Marcus Stroud been kidnapped or did he disappear since week one for other reasons?

2) What happened to the coaching the last few weeks? The Bills have looked like Marv Levy’s old teams trying to hold on to a small lead at the end of a game, playing the prevent defense just well enough to prevent themselves from winning.

3) Is James Hardy as useless as he appears?

by RSNexile on Nov 5, 2008 4:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

1) Stroud has had a dinged shoulder, but he’s as healthy as anyone on the team at this point. The Bills still do well against the run, and Stroud’s the biggest reason for that. We didn’t bring him here for stats; we brought him here for consistency. He’s been consistent. But yes, it’d be nice if we got some stats, too.

2) I think that these past two losses have a lot more to do with 7 turnovers than coaching. We played terribly in both contests, but we were still in them – and against two pretty good teams. I think the coaching has been consistent; it’s the performance on the field that hasn’t. Have there been some curious decisions by Jauron and the coaching staff? Certainly. But it’s not a departure from any other week; people just like to blame this type of stuff on the coaches.

3) Right now, yes. He’s got a chance to be good, and he’s working hard at it, but boy, does he have a long way to go. I’m more confident that Buffalo’s seventh-round rookie WR, Steve Johnson, could have an impact right now – but he hasn’t gotten that chance. He’s looked good when he’s been on the field.

What's the deal with Marshawn?

I’m a bit surprised by the (lack of) production by Marshawn Lynch so far this year. I was pretty high on him going into the season (drafted him in two of my fantasy football drafts), but so far he’s been very…bleh. Averaging only about 60 rush yards and less than 1 TD per game, and not a single game all season over 100 rushing yards. Is he not as good as many think he is? Is the coaching staff not giving him the ball enough? Offensive line not producing? What’s your take on him—can he be a franchise running back for the Bills, or no?

by JohnPaul on Nov 6, 2008 9:25 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I do think he can be a franchise running back. He’s not close to being the problem. Buffalo’s offensive line has been terrible, particularly run blocking. The fact that he’s scored 6 touchdowns, at the very least, has kept him a viable fantasy starter for you, I assume.

Lynch has been more of a factor as a receiver this season; he’s already got 27 grabs, as compared to the 18 he hauled in in his entire rookie campaign. He makes plays. But he isn’t getting any help; if Buffalo re-commits to the run game, he’ll start to produce statistically for you.

Oh Canada

How do the fans, the Rumblings crowd, and players if you’ve heard, feel about Bills games being played in Toronto?

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Nov 6, 2008 2:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Fans hate it. For Rumblings, “hate” is too strong a word, I’d say, but “discomfort” would fit well. I’m cool with it – I think it helps our franchise out tremendously, and always have. The players seem excited about it; they played well in Toronto during a pre-season game as well (against Pittsburgh), so there might be some magic to make up north.

some analyst mentioned that playing in an indoor dome

would take away your home field (i.e. rock-hard ground, freezing temps) advantage, especially when playing Miami. Do you feel that suggestion has any merit?

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Nov 7, 2008 7:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on your definition of the word “advantage”. When I look at the Bills, I see a pass-oriented offense and a speed defense. Those two schemes are generally neutralized by rock-hard ground and freezing temperatures. So no, I don’t think that suggestion has any merit whatsoever. I actually see the Toronto game as a benefit to the Bills on the field, though it will benefit Miami that week as well.

What's up with Jason Peters?

He demands a big-money extension, then plays like an ok-but-far-from-big-money-worthy lineman.

A good friend of mine who grew up rooting for the Bills and the Red Sox says he’s like Manny Ramirez. Is that a fair comparison?

by RSNexile on Nov 6, 2008 3:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

In a way, that comparison is fair. The difference? Manny produces in big games; Peters doesn’t.

Peters, inexplicably, morphed from an up-and-coming lineman into a prima donna. He’s done interviews every week this season; I don’t recall hearing a single word out of his mouth last year. Bills fans are pretty miffed with the dude. He still has moments where he’s dominant, but he’s giving up way too many crucial plays. He needs to shut his ass up and play football.
