Ryan Clark's Hit / Soon to be FedEx Package
I've seen the replay over and over and my head still hurts from it. I've read a lot of peoples comments saying this would be good clean fun back in the old days, everyone is whining because it was a Patriots WR, etc etc.
We all know he will be getting a FedEx package from the league and rightfully so. The ball was no where near Wes, let a lone he pulled up and Clark decided to leave his feet, launch himself into Wes and pretty much knock him out. If the ball was close to Wes I could understand him trying to break it up, but the play was pretty much dead and there was no reason to jack up Wes. This crap about its my job to tackle people that come across the middle... well for one he didn't have the ball so how are you making a tackle?
Am I just off my meds or did everyone see the same late hit I saw?
The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

Eh, this is just a can of worms. Without opening the tin all of the way, let me just say this.
The hit was not late, or at least not intentionally so.
It was between the whistles and last Clark knew the ball was in the air coming towards Welker. However, it is Clark’s responsibility to keep his eyes on the ball and know what is going on – you can’t claim ignorance in the NFL. Further, while the hit was not helmet to helmet, he did leave his feet and no one can deny he did so viciously. Had welker grabbed the ball the same result would have happened – incomplete pass.
As you can see, we missed Clark playing last year. Clark can be called dirty, cheap, etc, but this type of hit is going to make his job and the job of the steelers defense a lot easier in the future. A scared offense is a weak offense.
I don’t think it will be possible for this discussion to happen rationally, but we’ll see.

I never make it personal
It’s just my opinion after viewing the hit more than a few times. Welker’s a tough, clean player, and it just fries me to see him get tagged that badly where it caused a head injury, especially when he didn’t even touch the ball. I know it was legal, not helmet to helmet Bob Sanders style, but nonetheless questionable.
Keep the faith!

It’s totally questionable, I won’t dispute that. And the leaving the feet part makes it illegal.

I wasn't saying Clark is a dirty player
He plays hard like everyone should, its just that hit was questionable at the least.

I wasn’t referring to you necessarily, just repeating things I’ve read around the internets today.

It was either
Hes dirty, or will the NFL take the skirts off the players.
No one seems to see the middle ground. It was a questionable hit, the flag was deserved and hes most likely to get a fine because of it.
Everyone seemed to be crying… but he’s playing hard or like the old days. Yes he’s playing hard, but there is a fine line when it comes to laying the lumber and he crossed it.

Agreed......
“As you can see, we missed Clark playing last year. Clark can be called dirty, cheap, etc, but this type of hit is going to make his job and the job of the steelers defense a lot easier in the future. A scared offense is a weak offense.”
First Pats SB against St. Louis…The Pats D had their offense running scared on every play. Faulk was being shadowed by McGinest, Holt and Bruce were getting pounded off the line and in traffic…and when they did catch the ball it was lights out……
Our D plays better with people like Rodney Harrison (Clark) roaming around the field making vicious hits — makes some ( not all ) offensive players rethink the option of going over the middle. It was a spine jarring hit and looked like he got his vertebra re-aligned….BUT if Harrison had done it to an opposing player we would’ve cheered first and examined the legality of the hit second…

I think its safe to say
Most fans of the team who laid the lumber would be cheering first then examining the hit second.
At the same token though, if Rodney had done the same thing I would be reacting the same way.

That hit was epic.

Epic...how so?
I’m just trying to understand your version of epic.

Epic, adj.
- extending beyond the usual or ordinary especially in size or scope
Regardless of whether or not it was legal, that hit was huge, cartoonish even. In short, epic.

The fine definitely should be.

I dunno
15 grand? 30? It won’t be 100+, we know that based on past fines from the Rog. As well, this is Clark’s first notification from the league (I think) for a bad hit, and first-time offenders are usually fined less money. See also Fines Ward.

Shouldn’t wes welker also be fined for instigating the hit like Crowder?
I kid!

Probably. I mean, he WAS in the general vicinity of the ball and that could be construed as instigating, right? ;-)

I think you have a very reasonable approach to this given that it’s a pretty contentious thing and could, very well, get crazy.

That Hit is...
what football should be about! It’s what made me fall in love with the sport I played all through high school and at the Pac 10 level. Granted, Clark shouldnt have launched himself at Welker, but he absolutely should’ve have leveled him and gave him no shot of catching that tipped pass. I cant believe you guys are crying about the hit considering this is Tackle FOOTBALL; not flag! I guarantee Welker will have his head on a swivel when he crosses the middle from now on!

I think this comment says it all. I have no problem with a little rough and tumble. Hey, it’s football, right? But, launching is only used to cause maximum damage to a player. No sane fan can find a reason for it.

I wonder,
would you fee the same way if it had been Hines Ward that got leveled with an obvious cheap, late, and unnecessary hit? I’ll answer for you. In a word, no. You and every other Patriot hater would be screaming to the top of their lungs if it had been Rodney Harrison instead of Ryan Clark. Take a look at the replay where Wes and the other Steelers had eased up before the hit. And if he is so innocent, why did he apologize afterward? I am not saying that he is a dirty player, and there is nothing I love better than a good, legal hard hit, but this is far and above what should be tolerated by the league. If there is a next time, he should be suspended for at least one game if not more, no matter what team it is against(even the Dolphins or Jets).

I disagree...
Santonio Holmes got KO’d last week by a Bengal player and where it may have been vicious in nature, I didnt feel sorry for him! It comes with the territory. Football is a gladiator sport and I would rather see warriors instead of ballerina girls anyday. I cant believe you guys are whining about this play! LOL…BTW, I could care less about the Boston Cheaters and Im no Patriot Hater; I Hate every team except the Steelers! Next time video tape our signals so that your offensive coordinator will know what plays to run against our defense and not send Welker across the middle.

No Sane fan or American Football purist...
would be crying about that “Knock Out”…LOL! You guys are such hypocrites! Where you when the dirtiest player in Modern NFL history was laying the wood ala “Jack Tatum?” Are you kidding me? How about your All Pro Tackle pulling the hair of a certain Miami Linebacker last week and punching him while he was helmetless? Im glad Clark ran through Welker; I just wish he had split him half in the process!

Doesn't make sense
What are you even talking about? Matt Light didn’t launch himself at Crowder at all ala Jack Tatum. The two incidents were completely different. Wishing Welker were cut in half in the process — that’s another story altogether.
Keep the faith!

Dude...
Im talking about Harrison (whom I personally like) being out of the mold of Tatum! My reference to Light was in regards to dirty play, as was my entire post! Look I respect Welker, but he had to pay the price for coming across the middle and if that means he had to get knocked out; so be it! You guys cant be seriously crying about this pure football play for real considering the way your players play the game. Its the NFL; not the WNFL…LOL!

Interesting you would
bring up the useless waste of space Jack “I broke Darryl Stingley’s neck and proud of it” Tatum. You’re about as classless as he is.

The NFL is saying it was a legal hit
It was only flagged because of the refs “erring on the side of caution” I’m going to become a conspiricy theorist and start thinking that the NFL hates us. First Tom and then Wes, all OK with the main office.

Let's not talk about class Tinman63
…this from a bunch of cheaters.LOL! Dont hate on Big Smack Jack Tatum, it’s not his fault the Patsies were garbage all those years and you guys just caught up with the rest of the NFL. Oh yeah, you guys were cheating to win all those Superbowls , so they dont count really! Maybe if you guys could still tape and steal our defensive signals, you’d have known Clark was playing centerfield! I’m just saying….those who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones!

how 'bout talking sense

That doesn’t even make any sense. Tatum was a remorseless thug who tried to profit off of Stingley’s paralysis. What that has to do with the Patriots’ lousy record at the time is beyond me, or the ownership, coaching, and players who are in there now.
Keep the faith!
