Pick the AFC Champion

Two weeks ago I would have said “Titans.” But I think the Colts are playing the best ball in the AFC right now, and are peaking at exactly the right time.

PS
The Chargers, and the Dolphins, are frauds. They’ll each be bounced in their first games. The Ravens are going to eat the Wildcat for breakfast. And the Chargers? Forget it. The Colts are going to crush those guys. It won’t even be close.

The Ravens already dismantled the Wildcat
and the Dolphins will be no match for them. I was thinking that Pittsburgh might be the best defensively, but am not confident that they could beat the Colts with the way they’re playing right now. Agreed that the Chargers aren’t going anywhere.

I think I've heard something along those lines about the Dolphins every week this season.

Yeah, they defend well against just about anybody.
I’m not sure how much you can take out of that game at this point. The Dolphins are obviously a different team, and the Ravens have matured just as much.

If the Fins are a fraud...
…what are you saying about your Patriots – a team who lost by 25 at home to them AND are watching the playoffs at home this year?

Personally
I think Peyton is the most deserving of another ring, so I’m pulling for him (oh god, I never would thought I’d say that a year ago), but I think the Ravens are looking real good at the right time, which we learned last year, is key.

The Jets should be expelled from the NFL
hey guys, not a Pats fan here but your team is better than the Cardinals, Vikings, Eagles, Chargers, and Dolphins. Belichik deserves coach of the year for taking his B-team to the 4th-best record in the AFC. I watched the Jets gamne and that raggedy andy B**** favre should have retired TWO years ago. No Doubt next year the AFC East goes:
1. Pats
2. Miami
3. Buffalo
4. NYJ

Playoff seeding is ridiculous.
You guys are 11-5 and miss out. We’re 12-4 and have to friggin’ travel to play an 8-8 team. It just isn’t right to reward a team that goes 8-8 while playing in a crappy division.

be careful
Rivers has been on fire. Colts will need to score early and maintain momentum.

Mainiac is right
I keep telling myself that the Chargers looked that good only because Denver is a crappy team….
I hope our streak holds up. Regardless, I think this has been my favorite year as a fan. To see my team, your team and several others overcome adversity…has been inspiring.

I will be holding my breath the whole game.
I can NOT take another year in So Cal with a Charger win over the Colts.

It Hurts
But them’s the rules. My spouse wants to “just take the six best teams” and a buddy says there should be a rule that teams with .500 or worse records have to yield to the next highest wild-card contender. So what will we say next year when the Pats win the division at 8-8 on tie-breakers over the Dolphins (8-8), Bills (8-8), and Jets (a well-deserved 2-14), having played a much tougher schedule than some 10-6 team on the outside? We had our chances this year and can regret the Jets loss, Colts loss, Pittsburgh loss, and SD and Dolphins blow-outs. Schedule is going to be MUCH tougher next time out!

I agree
people want the rule changed because it benefits the Pats now, but you have to look at the past and how often does something like this happens, but even with that said, win one more game and we are not thinking about the rules

The NFL division system is about
beating your rivals. If we had swept Miami we wouldn’t be in this mess. Some years your rivals are good, some years they are bad, but the NFL wants to promote those rivalries, and I think it makes the league more interesting. I suppose the Pats are a more interesting team than the Cardinals, but if winning your division didn’t get you in than rivalry games would mean much less.

We had more of a chance to sweep the Jets in OT
…if we could have stopped them on 3rd and 15, and given Cassel a chance to win it.

exactly
All the teams knew the rules going in, it’s not like this is the BCS! :)
Besides, most people were thinking the AFC East would be the “weak” division this year. Turned out to not be the case, but I’m sure had it played out that way we still would be defending the legitimacy of the division title.
Plus, if people are really upset about this year specifically, you pointed it out: we lost to the Chargers. Had we beat them, they’d be out right now and we’d be in even under the 4-division, 2 WC system. Gotta win the games on your schedule, plain and simple. No whining! :)

After some thought, I agree, too
I’m no Pats fan (my Pats-loving husband and co-Colts bloggers can attest to that), but my first inclination was that it was totally unfair for your team not to make the playoffs. But in retrospect this is like our judicial system – more heavily weighted toward not convicting an innocent man. In addition to hyping up the intra-division rivalries, the system also seems designed to ensure somebody with a worse record but tougher schedule isn’t held out. A post on Stampede Blue today shows that the Pats had the easiest post-season-adjusted schedule among all teams, so having gone 11-5 seems a bit less impressive that way (though I will in no way denigrate the team’s accomplishments after losing as many starters as they did).

All a team can do is play the schedule it is given and beat the teams it "should"
We all know that statistics are helpful guides but don’t always tell the whole story. Strength of schedule stats are an example.
Last year, the Ravens went 5-11 but played the Patriots like it was a Super Bowl contender before being the only team to lose to the 1-15 Miami Dolphins. This year the 4-12 Cleveland Browns beat the NY Giants on national television. Teams don’t always play like they “should” and that’s why they bother to play at all.
And a post-season-adjusted schedule is a useless tool, with a 20/20 hindsight mentality. When the games are being played, the stat doesn’t even exist. Look at the Titans falling to the Jets — at the time, the Jets were 7-3 playing an undefeated Tennessee team. By the end of the season, the Jets were 9-7 and they were clearly on a downward trend. The strength of schedule would have the Titans playing a 9-7 team even though their record strength was actually better than that at the time of the game.

LOOKS LIKE A FISH FRY
I’m a die hard PATS fan and always will be , born and bred in N.E. but now live in FL. I get season tickets to the Fins every year just so i can watch the Pats play, i give away every other game.I have to let ya’ll know , you Fin Fans SUCK!! If they are behind you walk out , i have never seen such fair weathered fans before. bet you all are watching them now, right? I give them credit [well owed to Bill] for pulling the Fins out of the beach sand they have been buried in for so long , but to the fans i give nothing , you dont deserve them. Hopefully next year I wont see so many orange empty seats.

2008 playoffs
I’m also a hugePATS fan(you dont have to live in NE 2 b 1). I live in SUNNY FLA. wish i could see them more, but I’M EXTREMELY FORTUNATE this team didnot give up, esp when they needed to win in December, that showed how dedicated+TOUGH this great team is. The season flew by, however I ll watch the playoffs knowing who the REAL CHAMPIONS are. to overcome the BRADY injury was very excrutiating/shocking. Matt Cassel stepped up when other QBs would fail. THANX 4 a great season!! I may root for INDY they know how 2 win Dont like the SD but they won 4 in a row(tough tocall) not a raven fan, lets see how far FINS can go. Matt Ryan congrats. beat Warner like Pats did. ENJOY the games!strong>
