Mayo wins Defensive Rookie of the year

This kid is a BEAST!!!! What a season.  To come in to this sytstem and be a MAJOR contributor from day one is an impressive start to a hopefully long Patriots career.  Every game I watched, this kid did something great -- from picking up a screen, to getting at the running back, to being in on a tackle, he did it all.  I tip my hat to him for such a stellar season.  Just plain awesome.

Here's the link and the write up....

"NEW YORK (AP) — Jerod Mayo firmly answered everyone who criticized the Patriots for taking him with the 10th pick in April's draft by winning The Associated Press 2008 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Mayo was a nearly unanimous choice, earning 49 of 50 votes Wednesday from a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. He was the outstanding performer on a linebacking corps that often struggled during New England's 11-5 season, leading the team with 137 tackles.

Mayo's versatility, highlighted by quickness and a physical style, made him stand out even though the Patriots didn't make the playoffs"

Just caught this myself.

He got better every game, and didn’t hit the “rookie wall,” either. I’m excited to see his sophomore season.

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead

Nice catch

Don’t think anyone can argue with this choice. It’s a well-deserved honor for Mayo.

Keep the faith!

Somebody did

One voter cast his ballot for Keith Rivers, who spent half the season on injured reserve.

Whoever that voter is, he should permanently lose voting rights.

Yeah

I could understand voting for someone other than Mayo, but how do you justify voting for a guy who played in exactly six games?

What an idiot!

This is really the only choice the voters could've made.

I suppose you could make a case for Cromartie, but there were no other real stand out defensive rookies in 2008. No sign of DeMeco Ryans or Patrick Willis.
