Intro for 2008 NFL season- AFC South

Here we go, continuing down the AFC lineup... Now for the AFC South.  The AFC South is a pretty interesting division this year.  The Colts are the most obvious pick, but don't discount the Titans so soon.  The Jaguars are a high risk/high reward team, and the Texans are going to suprise some people, on both sides of the ball.

Star-divide

First off, the Indianapolis Colts...

Colts_20logo_medium

The Colts are always the same.  A good defense, juggernaut offense, and a great coach.  The only thing that will remain the same this season is the great coach.  As a diehard Pats fan, I hate the Colts with a passion; but that does not mean that I will not give the Colts their due in this article... Peyton Manning is a good QB in a terrific situation.  Peyton always racks up huge stats, but that is because of more than his own skill.  It helps that he has one of the best O Lines in the game at his disposal, who never let even a fly touch him. Also, one of the best WRs in Reggie Wayne, and a great running back in Joseph Addai.  For these reasons, the Colts have one of the most feared offenses in the game.  Not this year.  In my opinion, the main reason for the Colts success is their double pronged attack, passing and running.  Having one without the other is pointless.  Marvin Harrison, a future Hall-of-Famer, is getting very old and racking up many injuries.  He has been the main target of Peyton Manning over the last few years, and a big part of the Colts' success.  With him slowing down, the Colts could as well.

Best Player- Joseph Addai

Playoffs- Yes (Possible upset)

Now, the Titans.

Titans_medium

The Tennessee Titans could turn some heads this year.  A largely unconsidered fact:  the Titans actually beat the Colts last year, which means they can definitely compete with any team in the league.  Many people have discounted Vince Young as a huge bust, but I'm not so sure.  His numbers got better as the season progressed.  As the season moved on, he began attempting more passes and becoming more of a complete QB instead of a running back.  The last game of the year, Young set season highs in Completion % and yards per attempt.  I see promise.  Another plus is that the Titans were 5th in the league in rushing yards per game.  That is amazing, considering all they had to speak of was Lendale White.  Also, the Titans defense is one of the best in the game.  They ranked 8th in PPG last year, 5th in YPG and rushing yards allowed, and 10th in passing yards allowed.  They are young and Jeff Fisher is great at developing young linebackers, with Keith Bulluck to help mentor as well.  LenDale White (Reggie Bush's backfield mate at USC), has been progressing ever since he came into the league.  Watch for him to post better numbers than the 1,110 yards rushing and 7 TD's that he put up last year.  The WR position is in turmoil in Tennessee.  Their best receiver last year was Justin Gage, who only caught 2 TD's with an abismal 750 yards.  They must bring in another receiver to be a serious contender.

Best Player- Keith Bulluck/LenDale White

Playoffs- No (Possible upset over Colts)

Now for the Jaguars of Jacksonville...

Vinylmagnet-jaguars_medium

I love the potential of the Jags this upcoming season.  They have an always stellar defense, David Garrard is a blessing in disguise, and they made some terrific moves this off-season.  They could be a serious contender to take the AFC South.  Let me explain.  Last year, their defense ranked no lower than 15th in every major catergory.  They strengthened that defense in the draft by taking DE's with their first two picks.  Derrick Harvey, 6'5" and 252, is a monster.  He will bat down tons of balls with his height and put pressure on the QB every play.  Quentin Groves, the tree-trunk DE out of Auburn, is a freakin' machine.  He finished tied for the most sacks in Auburn history, and runs the 40 in 4.5.  Talk about scary.  They also added veteran wide-out Jerry Porter from Oakland to help establish a more respected passing game.  When opponents start dropping 4 DB's back in coverage, the Jags will have the game in hand.  They have two top ten RBs, Maurice Jones Drew and Freddy Taylor.  Fred Taylor is aging, pushing 33 this year, but last year was his first pro-bowl, so he doesn't seem to be slowing down at all.  MJD is one of my favorites, with his 4.3 speed in the 40 and his bowling-ball stature (5'7", 212 lbs).

Best Player- Fred Taylor/MJD

Playoffs- Possible upset

Now, for the Texans.  Saddle Up!

Vinylmagnet-texans_medium

The Texans made some major changes this off-season, for the better.  First of all, one change for the better out of their control, was that Andre Johnson is now healthy.  Before his injury last year, he was on pace to have the best numbers of his career.  Him and Matt Schaub has a great relationship, making them one of the more deadly combinations, especially in the redzone.  Owen Daniels was a nice suprise for the team last year, and he will continue to be a great pass catching option.  They shored up the once-weak O-Line with first round draft pick OT Duane Brown.  They also grabbed West Virginia running-back Steve Slaton in the third round, who has big potential.  They have banged-up, has been RB Ahman Green, whose best days are behind him.  Along with Slaton, they grabbed former Titans running back Chris Brown to fill the RB role.  That position is a hodge-podge of players, but I think that Chris Brown could post solid numbers because the defenses will be scared of Johnson and Daniels.  The defense has some good potential this year.  MLB DeMeco Ryans always leagds the team in tackles, and 2006 over-all first round pick Mario Williams has been steadily progressing, and last year had an over-whelming 14.0 sacks!!!  I also love Dunta Robinson, a blazing CB with huge potential to be a star in the league.

Best Player- Andre Johnson

Playoffs- No

Next time,  if I receive any positive comments about this blog, I will continue on to the AFC West.  Thanks

Addai best player? He doesn’t make my top 5 (in no order-Peyton, Marvin, Wayne, Sanders, Freeney)

Before last season Marvin had missed only two games to injury. He’s had one big freak injury. He was blocking and Addai got tackled behind him, rolling up on his legs from behind.

and since the 2006 playoffs the Colts D has been great. They have up the least points in the league even with Freeney missing the last 7 games.

Yeah

I agree shake and bake, but still. Marvin is 35 and he is starting to decline. He has been the centerpiece of the Offense along with Peyton and now that he isn’t as dominant as he once was, things could change. Addai, however, should be solid, because of the great O line, his youthful age, and the attention paid to Peyton’s arm. That was my point.

without Marvin for most of the season

and with Clark, Gonzalez and both starting tackles missing time Peyton still had a elite Peyton Manning type season. Last season Manning had more TDs, a higher completion % and as high yards per attempt than Brady ever had more last year. Peyton is still Peyton even without Marvin and without his normally phenomenal pass protection.

Sacks

The Colts had the second best Offensive Line stats in the league… get your facts straight. I didn’t know that you love the Colts so much, go over to the colts blog instead of promoting them here. Tom Brady was sacked 21 times, and so was Peyton Manning. Brady almost doubled his TDs aswell. The pats had injuries as well.

by GoPats#12 on Jul 13, 2008 9:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know where you got your numbers

but the only league wide team sack stats I found here, had the Colts as 7th in sacks allowed with 23, (6th in adjusted sack rate). The 21 times Manning was sacked was the most since 2002.

The point was Manning still puts up stellar numbers without the benefit of all his weapons.

You used the word “ggod” to describe Manning as a QB. Fact is he isn’t good, He is phenomenal.

A couple of contentions

I am a Colts fan but I certainly don’t begrudge Patriots fans hating on the Colts, and particularly on a Patriots site. After all, this kind of posturing and challenging and rivalry is what fandom is all about. However, that said, facts are facts. As the saying goes, we are entitled to our own opinions but not our own facts. There are a couple of things in your preview that I take issue with based on the incomplete or unfactual nature of your account:

1) Marvin. Don’t want to belabor this becasue it’s already been discussed, but beyond the aforementioned freak injury, I see no evidence of a decline. Yes, he’s getting older, but he takes excellent care of himself. Further, his game has never been about blazing speed or great strength. Intelligence, route-running, and soft hands don’t typically disappear as early as other attributes do. I don’t see why he couldn’t perform at a high level for at least a couple more years.

2) The OLine. Yes, we have a line that produces phenomenally. But to some extent I believe it’s a chicken-or-egg thing. In other words, is Peyton sacked so infrequently because we have superior linemen, or do the linemen look good because Peyton is excellent at reading defenses and has one of the quickest releases in the game? I think it’s both; more of a symbiotic relationship. But it bears noting that in addition to the previously discussed injuries, the Colts had a rookie LT (and a 2nd rounder at that—not one of the top of the scouting class) starting in place of a Pro Bowler who unexpectedly retired. Combine all of this with Marvin’s injury and Peyton still had a terrific year. I think it should be obvious that Peyton deserves a good deal of credit for his success.

3) Titans. I actually think the Titans are on the way down, although I agree that the Jags and Texans could be on the way up. I won’t get into my reasons for this (this is not my preview after all). But you mention the Titans beating the Colts as evidence that they can play with anybody. I think this is a little disingenuous. The Titans beat the Colts on the last game of the season when the Colts had nothing to play for and rested their starters. Peyton was taken out halfway through the 2nd quarter. Addai had 4 carries. The Titans won by 6. I’m sure there are good reasons for believing the Titans can play with anyone, but their victory over the Colts is not one of them.

Thanks

Well put

I couldn’t agree with you more on all three points.

Titans? Hm.

And, just for the record, I think Gerrard’s last season was a fluke. Just my gut feeling. Felt the same way about Marc Bulger last year…

Hm.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Marvin. But, why is he THE factor here? I hope he is healthy enough to play – cause I believe he still has it in him. However, Reggie, Dallas, and Anthony (more to the end of the season) were Peyton’s go-to guys last year. Who says they can’t handle it again this year?

Just would like to know if I am on to something here.

Thanks.

Marvin

While Marvin being out most of the season was tough, I believe it forced/gave other guys a chance to step up, giving them valuable experience. The old adage: you can’t get the job without experience and you can’t get experience without the job. I still say the Horse remains the Patriots’ biggest threat and vice versa. Let’s hope the moves we’ve made at DB are enough to counteract the experience gained by Reggie and crew. It’s gonna be a good season.

The word is

Marvin is practicing and doesn’t seem limited or to be holding back at all.

to be honest

this is not a knock on marvin at all, but if the colts went through the whole season without marvin then i would still predict playoffs! marvin is just a little to put us over the top

Freeney is more important

At this point, I think Freeney is more important than Harrison. Freeney draws more attention to teams and will critical for the Colts to have a chance to edge out the Patriots by getting to Brady.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Jul 29, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If I recall...

...Freeney was pressuring Brady throughout the whole first half of their 2007 matchup. In the second half, he was ineffective. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a super talented DE, but I think he needs to learn a few more moves other than bang-and-spin.

The fall off in the 2nd half

is why the Colts brought in two rookie speed rushers, Marcus Howard (who is getting raves on his speed) and Curtis Johnson, and are experimenting with Raheem Brock back at DE. Last year they didn’t have anyone behind Freeney and Mathis that could get consistent pressure. Now they have two Robert Mathis clones and Brock working himself back into a DE build after two years at DT.

Harrison

Reports on Harrison at training camp have been good; it seems like he’s recovering nicely from a difficult 2007. I think the question is this: at his age and coming off of a pretty severe injury, does he have the legs to go all season?

Blogger at SBNation's New England Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit

But before

the long recovery time (the injury happened when Addai got rolled up on his leg while Marvin was blocking, it had nothing to do with his age) Marvin hadn’t shown any signs of his age. He’s going to have to slow down eventually, but his hands and route running are so good and he has speed to lose. I’m feeling very good about Marvin.
