New England Patriots Links for 7/17/08
In a very interesting read, si.com's Don Banks discusses how the Chargers are making serious moves to beat the Patriots. In particular, Antoine Cason was picked up to handle Wes Welker. This I want to see - Cason the rookie against arguably the best slot receiver in the NFL today. Wes, just to rub it in, make a great catch then tie Cason's shoelaces together and smack him on the back of the helmet.
Colts QB Peyton Manning has a bursa sac removed from his knee. He'll most likely miss training camp with a 4-6 week recovery. Indy fans now know how we felt seeing Brady walk to Giselle's apartment with a boot on. Sucks, don't it? No matter how minor, this crap makes ya nervous.
Mike Reiss, as usual, does a bang up job of breaking down the wide receiver corp and what to look out for. Besides, isn't this like the coolest picture ever?

Wes Welker
He still staying in the slot MaPatsFan? Thought they may have shifted him to Stallworths vacant spot and move Gaffney over to slot.
And yes I do know now how you felt when Brady was wearing that boot or a few years back when he had that sore shoulder I believe. Sent shivers down my spine when I first read the news.

Wes at slot
Chad Jackson is the “heir apparent” to Stallworth’s position in the WR ranks. He’s been mostly out of commission for the past 2 years due to injuries, but he seems to be back. He’ll be one of the guys I’m keeping an eye on during training camp. That position, if used the way Stallworth was used, requires some meat on your bones as those guys are like RBs post catch. They can dish out some stuff and break tackles. Wes is a little guy and will tend to drop before he gets crushed.
In my mind, Gaffney is more of a specialized receiver and a “secret weapon”, if you will. He’s great on toe nail scraping catches on the sidelines and in the endzone. I would project Welker to stay in the slot and underneath; he was soooo successful at it in 2007, but you never know. Belichick could have a bunch of stuff up his sleeve; there’s been so much film on these guys he may decide to shake it up a bit.

Chargers article was great!
The best lines were,
For Smith’s supremely talented team - and the Chargers have what is widely considered the most impressive roster in the league - the hated but always envied Pats remain the daunting road block that threatens to once again stand between San Diego and a potential Super Bowl season. No wonder every personnel move Smith makes these days is played out with one ultimate question in mind: How does this help us match up better with New England?
Just goes to prove how all the haters out there are just wannabes at the core. Damn, it’s good to be a Patriots’ fan!
Keep the faith!
