New England Patriots Training Camp starts today, 7/24/08

Whoo hoo!!  Training camp starts today and...it's raining. :-(  This means the boys hold practice inside at the Dana-Farber Field House, closed to the public.  This is a perfect example of why you should check patriots.com before making the trek to Foxboro.  The first bit of news is players on the PUP or Physically Unable to Play list:

DL Jarvis Green
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis
CB Ellis Hobbs
OL Nick Kaczur
G Stephen Neal
OT Oliver Ross
LB Bo Ruud
LB Mike Vrabel
WR Wes Welker
C Ryan Wendell
DL Mike Wright

Before you freak, like I did (Wes/Vrabel/Hobbs?!?!?), here's an explanation from Mike Reiss about the difference between the active/PUP list during training camp and reserve/PUP list during regular season:

These players can return to practice at any time in training camp, once they are cleared to practice because they are on the active/PUP list. The active/PUP list is different from the reserve/PUP list during the season. When players are on the reserve/PUP list during the season, they miss at least the first six weeks.

Get back into practice, guys.  Make me feel better.

The "Freakout-part"

I had that, too :) But even with that explanation, I would really like to know what’s up with Vrabel and Welker. But getting info about the players from the Pats FO is like chatting with the CIA… :)

Oh, that's rich

Let’s talk about something equally stupid. How’s Jaguars WR Matt Jones doing with his cocaine charge? Ya see? Every team has a few skeletons.

I say cut Jones... Although our injury to Porter means he gets a reprieve...

Seriously though… Why the hell put so many people on PUP… You know not a one will still be on there for the start of the season

Good question

Mike Reiss from the Boston Globe addressed that a bit. It could be anyone’s guess, but his thoughts (and some of the players, too) was that they’d played so late into the season, anyone requiring off season surgery (CB Ellis Hobbs, for example) would push their recovery time into training camp. Guys like Welker didn’t appear injured, but my guess is he was worn out. I mean, the dude was on the field constantly.

For me,

the biggest question is Vrabel. Welker didn’t participate in the spring camp/OTA’s, either. Hobbs had offseason surgery/surgeries, Neal had a knee injury, Kaczur has trouble with the law. Ross was injured when we signed him, if I remember correctly. However, about Vrabel, Green, and Wright, nothing is known

Let's get ready to rumble!

Ok, we have a PUP list… we always do. Those guys will be back and fine, don’t worry about it. Personally, I can’t wait to see the Pats shredding NFL teams like so much paper. Here’s to an awesome season to come. I knew there was a reason I turned down job offers in California!

What, no Brady listed?

Ya think after all this time maybe his shoulder injury might be HEALED???

Keep the faith!

This is the PUP list

not the regular season injury report. Those players are not allowed to practice until they get removed from the list. I’m sure Brady will continue his ‘probable’-streak… :D
