Preseason Game #1: Ravens @ Patriots

Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots

Gang,

opening up the Game Thread early as I may be away from my computer for awhile.  Believe it or not, I'm visiting the Bass Pro Shop at Gillette with an avid outdoorsman from out-of-town, but won't be staying for the game. :-(  Oh well.  I'll jump in when I can.

It’s … football season already?

Not sure if it’s a good or bad thing…

Mayo looks SOLID.

A little late reading pass a couple of times and got caught in the wash once on the 1st drive, but just made a great play—a very solid, professional play on the ravens 2nd possession.

They came right at him; he took on the block, shed the o-lineman and made the hit, gain of 2ish. Very nice.

He’s been around or at the man on every pass to the backs as well.

They cut the internet broadcast off on me… so I get to watch the play by play on NFL.com…. I wish I could hear the game =(

Oh, Cassel

Chad was open, and he threw it behind him (for an IT, of course…)

On the other end, that Mayo hit was pretty good :)

COuld've been Jackson, too.

though Cassel looks like it’s his first time on the field.

ouch...

Cassel looks aweful tonight…

by Ogor on Aug 7, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well that was a depressing series.

Penetration everywhere, no seal on the back side; Cassel looking like a fool. Ventrone not catching, a huge run-back (with a potential block inthe back) Yuck. Preseason football looks like shit.

I would've called

2 penalties on that return, but whatever… I hope Cassel is done for the night. And they’ll do some blocking…

Take a step back time

...and think like a coach. Everything called is called to get a specific kind of look at a key few folks.

And Randy Cross knows better than he speaks. So he’s pissing me off, too.

Again its preseason… don’t read too much into the score or the actual plays… its all about evaluating the new talent. Remember we went 1-3 in the preseason and still won the Superbowl in 2003 (or was it 04, I forget)

Boy, Don Criqui really loves him some shopping!

He can’t shut up about Patriot Place. Sounds like he’s going to spend a few hours in the mall before he heads on down the road—maybe visit some duty-free shops, try on a thong or model a sarong or two. Maybe a pair of shoes.

Figurs

He is looking pretty good for a return man. 52 yard punt return and a 38 yard kickoff return. Granted its not against out best special teams, but still.. sounds like some nice vision and speed

Rice....

He is looking pretty good in his debut. I always liked the guy at Rutgers.

by Ogor on Aug 7, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well...

I still think Gutierrez looks a whole lot more comfortable and brings more to the table then Cassel. He wasn’t spectacular, but he looked decent with the second string line protecting him. Made good reads, although he should have thrown the ball away instead of the 2 sacks.

Yeah, to both of you.

But then he killed it with a throw in the fog.

I don’t know if I’ve got much more than the 1st couple of series of the 3rd in me tonight.

Takeaways from the 1st half:
1. the upheaval across the oline is a problem—is it a sortable one? Kaczur looked lost over on the left; Hochstein and, was it Connolly?, looked like they had a number of communication problems; Yates is a sieve, Britt is slow of foot. Time will tell.

2. Thank god we’ve still got Tom Brady.

3. LaMont Jordan still has some tread on his tires.

4. Crable might be something; same for Wheatley and Merriweather. Both looked like they had a clue. Pierre Woods didn’t do badly at all.

5. Chad Jackson still looks a little clueless. Is he stupid? Or just unlucky?

6. Jerod Mayo is ready to start in the NFL right now. What a pick that was.

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead

so....

For those watching the game on TV…. How did “the Chad” look? From what little I was able to hear it sounded like he was open a couple times and either bad throws, not noticed, or hit as he caught .

by Ogor on Aug 7, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jackson didn't impress

Didn’t like Cassel and Jackson jawing at each other in the first quarter either. It appeared that Chad wasn’t where he was supposed to be, but with Cassel, who knows??? Maybe he didn’t throw it where it was supposed to be. Not a good WR-QB combination.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Aug 7, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah...

Tough to tell. No one knows what the call was, but it sounded like it was thrown behind Jackson. Kind of tough to tell if Cassel didn’t anticipate his speed, or if he zigged when he should have zagged

by Ogor on Aug 7, 2008 9:14 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hard to say.

He was hung out to dry on two quick-screens. I can’t figure out if the lineman (once Kaczur, once Britt) was just too slow getting out there, if the D was tipped off in some way, or if Jackson wasn’t setting it up right.

He was overthrown once and dropped one. There was an interception that he may have had a hand in—not sure if it was his mistake or the QB’s.

First half

Pierre Woods looked good, Gary Guyton, Lewis Sanders—they looked good, especially Sanders’ break up of that Boller long bomb in the first quarter.

Jerod Mayo’s helmet popper brought some cheers here.

Chad Jackson???? Juries still out on him in my book

I used to work at a brew pub.

Yeah, I knew that.

The brew pub part is true, though. It was fun, ‘cause they wanted us to be competent to talk about the beer the way a waiter in a good restaurant can talk about the wine. So we got lots of lessons in hops and barley, different baking techniques and brewing procedures. Plus, plenty of beer to drink.

How can a guy 6-6 run that well?

It's all relative.

You’re used to seeing Brady and Cassell, who are about equally cement-footed.

As to how a 6-6 guy can move like that, it’s not so unprecedented. Practically every guard in the NBA is in that range.

Our linebacking corps

is looking pretty solid and pretty deep. This is a good thing.

Way to help out the offense, buddy.

Our kick units are going to get reamed in film tomorrow.

Nicely Done!

Let’s hope the rule it caught.
Looks like we might lose this one.

Man...

I can’t wait to see Jordan playing with Moss, Welker, Watson and Maroney. That will be one hell of an offensive lineup

Speaking of which....

Eckle is stil Practice squad eligible right? I know he is in the Navy, and might have to back on active duty if he doesn’t make the cut, but baring that we could keep him on the Practice squad right?

Jones....

I guess he isn’t making the cut

in my opinion...

Getting Favre shoots the team in the foot for the long term. They just shot the confidence of all their incumbent QB’s, and Farve won’t be worth it for more then a season or two. It sounds like Mangina trying to save his job.

O'Connell Outstanding

CJ’s gotta go

CJ Jones

CUT HIM RIGHT AFTER THE GAME

by bartHML on Aug 7, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't get....

Kneeling down at the end of a game in the pre season. Pre-season isn’t about W or L, its about evaluating your talent. That is wasted time IMHO
