Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Our worst nightmare?

From ESPN.com:

New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, two NFL sources confirmed to ESPN's Michael Smith.

The vice president for player personnel at New England, Pioli, 43, is close to Patriots coach Bill Belichick and has been with the Patriots for nine years.

Pioli should find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs' home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli."

Adam Schefter confirmed it too.

Shoot...

I was really hoping he’d stay. It seems that on top of Pioli, Dom Capers and Brad Seely might be leaving too.

The Patriots staff is being raided left and right.

We DESERVE Pioli and he DESERVES us.

go over to the Chiefs site on SBN, ArrowheadPride.

Since the Pioli story broke nary an hour ago, we’ve already had over 300 comments.

That is passion, that is a fanbase starving for talent.

I won't go into the "deserving" part (which I don't quite get anyway)...

…since after all it was Belichick who brought him to New England. But I will offer congratulations to your Chiefs, as the organization and team will only get better under Pioli’s leadership.

Keep the faith!

Sorry Marima

I’m just giddy right now.

He had to leave the nest at some point and you know it. You can’t keep talent like that forever. Thank you, as I’ve said before, I have great respect for the Patriots organization, from the ownership right on down to the fanbase. We look forward to seeing you in the playoffs for many seasons to come.

lol, I know

This is nothing like when Eric Mangini left for the Jets and left us all furious at how it was done. Pioli means so much more to the organization than Mangini ever did, and he will be leaving with the gratitude of Patriots Nation for his contributions to our team.

So, I guess I’m saying that while I’m happy for him and his new opportunity (he is only 43), I’m sad that he’s leaving. AND It makes me a tad unsure of how it will all work out and settle down here in New England.

With Nick Cesario promoted to directer of player personnel this season, I have to think that the Patriots have already been planning for Scott’s departure, just as they pretty much plan for as many variables as they can. Situational football — situational management.

Keep the faith!

I think they mean

They really really really really need him.

"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

We did need him

I am a Chiefs fan through and through and my best friend is a Patriots fan. It is an understanding that Pioli was the perfect candidate to take over a team in a rebuild and start from scratch with his name stamped on it like a badge of honor. When it came to the Patriots Big Bill was the guy (to me as an outsider looking in) that was calling most of the shots and I really didn’t know what Pioli brought to the table until we were in talks with him to be our new GM. I really like Pioli and have HUGE respect for the Patriots and all that they have accomplished and will accomplish in the future. But one thing that I think we can both agree on and please don’t take this the wrong way…but Pioli wanted to make a name for himself and move out of Belichick’s shadow. Bill’s one of the best (if not the best) coach in the NFL and Pioli loves and admires that…but it became Bill’s name stamped with the Patriots because Bill brought in Pioli…it was Bill’s baby to begin with. It’s high time Pioli got his due and got with a team that he could build from the ground up…new HC and coaching staff, money under the cap to use, young and growing talent with a upcoming top draft pick…this was an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up and we gave him everything he wanted/needed to do so. K.C. needed him and I also think the NFL needed him to do this or else this franchise might have died out and moved to L.A. and that would’ve changed the face of the NFL forever. Maybe in a bad way or maybe in a good…we will never know and maybe it would’ve never happened…but what we do know is that Pioli is reaping his rewards in K.C. for all he learned and worked for/at in NE. You guys were good to him and I can promise that we will treat him in kind and we’ll see you in the playoffs.

There's no hope with dope...

Hey

Belichick had to do the same thing when he made the split with Parcells, and we’ve been the beneficiaries of that since.

Keep the faith!

I think we have already had our worst nightmare come true, in that KC game. I think if BB can work his way around losing Brady, he can work his way around anything. No playoffs, but, we should have been there, no one denies this, not even Colts fans.

Nope.

Not even Colts fans.

This should all make for an interesting ’09. Pioli gone, Dungy gone (rumors we might lose a few more).

/no more parity. no more parity. no more parity. no more parity….

really?

I guess a ‘regime change’ is as good a time as any to try somewhere different, but what positions do you think will be leaving?

Keep the faith!

Well, they are just rumors but...

DC – Meeks (I’m ok with that one)
Special Teams – Purnell (I don’t even need to mention how bad we suck on ST)
OC – Moore (I’m not buying this one)

All to be taken with a grain of salt. Everyone’s crazy right now. I mean, we have some people over there trying to sell the 3-4 for OUR D. Gives me a chuckle.

Thx - the rumor mill is definitely churning

Brad Seely, who we just lost to the Browns, is a significant loss to us in my opinion and I don’t know who will replace him.

He really helped Gostkowski turn into a premier kicker (and we both know how important that is), and Belichick has always put an extremely high value on field position and special teams.

Keep the faith!

There’s no rumor about Moore leaving, just some guy on Stampede Blue who has no idea what he is talking about and pulling stuff out of his butt. There’s no way Tom Moore is leaving until Peyton retires. I don’t think Polian would let him.

Rumor or not though, Purnell needs to be shitcanned.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Purnell is gone
Meeks is interviewing with the Jets

So much for rumor.

Moore will definitely stay.

ugh, this hurts

Sorry to see Scott go, but I’m glad it’s to a team like KC that is tough to root against (unless you’re one of their divisional rivals)! As long as it wasn’t to Miami or the Jets or Bolts, I wish him the best, and also the best to our Pats in getting a quality replacement!
