Open Game Thread: Patriots @ Broncos
New England Patriots at Denver Broncos, Oct 11, 2009 4:15 PM EDT

Student vs. Teacher. The chess match begins. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the AFL, both teams will be sporting their throwback uniforms. I love "Pat Patriot" and the jerseys are cool. Let's see how the backfield-by-committee steps up with yardage leader Fred Taylor sidelined with a bad ankle. Law Firm anyone?

That was horrible
After the kind of year Paps had, though, I shouldn’t be surprised he wouldn’t be able to close out a game in the postseason. He was starting to look like he’d worked all that out, and then this.
Bleh
I can’t watch this one, so I guess I’ll be relying on your people’s great descriptions and whatever link I can find on here. Heh. Thanks, people!
i'm supposed to get it here
But who knows, with last minute regional coverage shifts. Right now I’m just getting studio highlights. Nice to see Matt Cassel hitting Vrabel for a TD the way Brady used to him with the Pats.

Damn
I didn’t think the Denver unis would be that hideous but damn, they are.
Beer is good! And stuff!
could be a long day
if the D doesn’t start clicking. can’t stop the run or an outside pass right now.
well start stopping them
but i seriously doubt we were prepared for the wildcat this game

D was supposed to be our advantage. Doesn't seem so
Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit
They got into field goal range
Prater’s not going to miss all the time, even from 48.
YAY so now we get the ball in decent position.
but can we capitalize. mapats fan u got the goats ready?

Thank goodness
At this point, I have no confidence in Maroney.

This will be a game of short passes and screens to start with, IMO

I'm 0-4 in Sports since the Pats last win.
I need something to sing about, y’know?
Thanks for the starting drive. Keep it moving!
he really does.
we just gtta stop the broncos offense again

by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 4:41 PM EDT reply actions
Sox bullpen blew it today
The Pats better win big.
UW gave it away
The defense deserved to win. The offense and special teams deserve to be with Michigan State instead.
Are they not practicing the deep ball this year?
Because I don’t think I’ve seen Brady throw a good one all season.
Where do the Pats FIND these guys?
Adam first, now Gostkowski.
They’ve had probably the best kicker for almost a decade now.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions
i know he was pressured. but u dnt get a much easier pass than that
by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah
They missed a field goal, we scored a TD, they fumbled, we kicked a FG.
Now you’re all caught up. :)
WTF is that?!?
Inexcusable to have to call a timeout right after the other team did.
Looked like he had it
And purposefully backed up to try and dodge Mayo.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Too small for QB, too inexperienced as WR.
Or something. Heh.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 11, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Heh, yeah.
Pretty good 6th rounder him.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Does anyone on this team besides Mayo know how to tackle?
Gaffney isn’t good enough to make anyone look that stupid.
yea. we need to put more points on the board
make this game out of reach

Hi
Long time no post. Went to the Big E last week, so I wasn’t here for the Ravens game.
We look good so far. Let’s get this 3rd down stop. : )
Not sure I'd call it lucky.
The punter tried to be too perfect.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Well now I don't know if it was Faulk, Edelman, or Welker!
What’s going on here!
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Hopefully the Pats flatten today
And I can forgot about what happened to the Red Sox oday. : (
And indeed they do.
Good grab by Welker.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
He did it again!
He thought about dancing outside, but just turned his shoulder up!
What is going on?!
That's right
Though I believe you get a third if you win the first two. That’s irrelevant here, though, because they lost the first.
Denver's out of challenges now
What’s McDaniels thinking? For three yards?
Well, they're gonna get it back.
But that’s a dumb move by McDaniels. I think he’s trying too hard against BB.
Or he wants to break the momentum
That can work against Brady – a la Jets.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 11, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions
No way.
Ball hit the ground and came out.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Inexcusable
Someone ought to smack Mankins upside the head. He’s taking points off the board for us.
Yeah seriously
3 points is still 3 points. This Denver offense doesn’t need an excuse to get pumped up. : \
all three burned
one on the first drive to blunt Denver momentum
one on the bad formation
and now this one
Did somebody hit the Pats with a stupid stick?
Both Mankins and Warren with the moronic penalties. BB should make them run a few hundred laps when they get back to Foxboro.
Bend but don't break isn't doing well against the pass
Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit
WTF was that?
It was like Springs was watching the play instead of defending it.
Phew, got the TD
Looking good. We go to halftime up by 10 with the ball in the 2nd half.
wlda been hilarious if moss took it all the way back
by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions
Should. Might not.
The NFL has been consistently inconsistent in doling out the fines. They’ve given them for a lot of plays that don’t deserve them this year, and they haven’t given them for a lot of plays that do.
Yes, it's illegal to lead with the helmet
But the officials missed it.
I still don't like how the secondary are making the majority of tackles
I’d like to see the big-hitting LBs up there. DJ Williams has the most for the Broncos; it’s Leigh Bodden and Meriweather for the Pats.
Mayo isn't looking very quick.
If he gets up to speed, I’d expect some more tackles from that group.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Not a great pass, but Moss should have had it
When he gets both hands on it, he has to come down with it.
No, that's a good call
Let’s not let the Broncos get away with penalties, like they did on that illegal formation.
its coo. we need to put points on the board though
im sensinga brady to moss.
crossing my fingers :D
by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 6:12 PM EDT reply actions
Maybe that's the way to get him to run
Put in Vollmer as a fullback, hand the ball off the Maroney, hand Maroney off to Vollmer, and have Vollmer run.
Vollmer as a high-diving board?
Short yardage issues? No problem. Toss him in there like a midget in a bar fight.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 11, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions
More indecisive running by Maroney
Is he pathologically incapable of running downfield?
damn a td wouldve been huge
but i guess a fg works too

we werent in the redzone
but just outside of it at the 23-25

phew!
by ElephantEyelash on Oct 11, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions
Brady had better be practicing that deep ball
He’s looked horrible on it all year.
it is eating the clock tho
but we have to put points up for this to be effective
by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions
lets see if denver can bail out this drive for us again
by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 6:44 PM EDT reply actions
We only need 3 yards
For a 5 yard penalty to give us the first.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Nice punt coverage....
Just what the doctor ordered. Then again, he also ordered a safety. : )
nice...didn't realize he was back
wasn’t he the one with the elbow injury?
by ElephantEyelash on Oct 11, 2009 6:48 PM EDT reply actions
sweet.
he must have some rubber ligaments or something
by ElephantEyelash on Oct 11, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Not enough.
We didn’t take away yards or the ball.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions
That's a bullshit call
I mean, yeah, he should be flagged for taunting, but they threw the flag before the taunt!
I'm sorry I said anything
But this is Brady’s time now.
WE WILL SCORE
it is not an option. we will score
by MOSS81 on Oct 11, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions
YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!!
THAT’S THE BEST YOU CAN DO ON A CRUCIAL THIRD?!
Who the HELL are you?! That’s not Tom Brady!
Welker
Needs to turn his butt around. THat was right to him.
Right to his foot maybe.
Brady can’t lead his receivers anymore.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Hell of a play by Springs
That’s a big gain if he misses.
Gotta admit
This is a pretty sad looking 9-1 game.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions
We'd better win the coin toss
I’d say try the bomb, but I don’t trust Brady right now.
You gotta admit
Our defense has come through the last two drives. Endless props to them.
There goes the ballgame
Brady can’t even win a coin flip today!
In all seriousness, it's scary how mediocre Brady looks.
by Ben Buchanan on Oct 11, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
definitely
im worried that the kinks still havent been ironed out
by ElephantEyelash on Oct 11, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Kinks?
I’d call them “Inabilities to throw the ball to receivers”

one catch from that distance and theyre in range

really embarassing

This isn't even a preseason team right now
This is a pretty good high school team right now.
I'm watching a team
that doesn’t want to win a football game today, and it ain’t Denver.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
Denver has
been a surprise.
But we have issues, and they need addressing. I have not seen much fire from this bunch all season, and it is very apparent this game. This was well in hand, and they just let Denver out desire them.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
what happend to brady?
this one is all on brady. Brady lost this game for us. how many times did he over throw his recievers.
: "Rip? Oh, he was funny, man. He said, ‘Boston? Dang man, Boston?’ I said, ‘Hey, you got to go with the flow.’"—F Rasheed Wallace, on the reaction of former Detroit teammate Rip Hamilton to his signing with the Celtics
He was part of it, but he's not alone
The defense played like crap.
no brady couldn’t help the defense. where the hell is his head? not in the ball game thats for sure.
: "Rip? Oh, he was funny, man. He said, ‘Boston? Dang man, Boston?’ I said, ‘Hey, you got to go with the flow.’"—F Rasheed Wallace, on the reaction of former Detroit teammate Rip Hamilton to his signing with the Celtics
What Tuesday's practice should look like:
Brady and Moss need to practice the deep ball until they can connect 20 times in a row.
Mankins, Meriwether, and Warren need to run laps until they vomit. Then they need to run some more.
Maroney needs to come down with a phantom injury so he can be put out his misery on IR.
The entire defense needs to run tackling drills. All damn day.
BB needs
to light a fire under these guys asses. And Brady is a shadow of his former self – so far.
Things had better change fast or last year’s 11-5 will seem like nirvana.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
