Post Game Open Thread: Broncos defeat Patriots, 20-17
What can you say. With all the gifts they were given, they just couldn't take advantage. This could've easily gone our way if many offensive things happened, but the biggest problem was our defense. Just awful. There's no way to sugar coat it. Discuss.

Thanks guys for a great week of civil discourse.
I don’t want to mike light of your loss, it sucks and I well know it…. but it was a great game, great emotions, and we should have many more great ones to come.
I can say with no equivocation that I look forward to the next match-up. You are a classy group of fans, and your team isn’t too shabby either. Best of luck the rest of the way!
I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

Our team stinks,
at the moment. Whether that will improve remains to be seen.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
Not that great a game
Neither team was great today. It’s just your team was kind of blah while ours was epic suck. You were the better team today, and that’s what good teams do even when they don’t play their best.
We’ll see you in January.
Back atcha and nice win
I’m depressed, but at least it was a good interaction with you guys.

I will say that I wish McDaniels the best. I’ve always liked him.

Definitely a nail-biter
Offensive and defensive plays were very conservative. Not going full tilt. D-backs looked winded on a 30 yard sprint. Not pretty, but we definitely didn’t do enough to win.

Meriwether, Warren, and Mankins are idiots
And if I was BB, I’d give the entire defense red capes to wave in front of the ballcarriers, similar to the kind of tackling they showed today. How many missed tackles did we see? Did it hit 30?
maroney didn't even run much today!
he only had one bad run! don’t even try to make maroney one of the bads! he was doing good! he wasn’t dancing, he was HITTING people! they need to use maroney more, especially as a pass catcher in the backfield! it’s their fault, not maroney’s.(response to RSNexile in previous post).
He missed a hole on at least one run
He was dancing on a couple others.
And that missed block was inexcusable.
he was
trying to make a cut block, and the guy saw it right away, and dodged it. i heard the announcers say that.
That's laughable
They don’t use Maroney much because every time they give him the ball he pulls the Twinkletoes act. If he’d run upfield instead of practicing his ballet they’d use him more.
he didn't use his "ballet" this game.
he was pounding the ball. did you forget that he was supposed to be stopped after 2 yards, the he pushed forward for 5 this game? you must of, because you just seemed ignorant and biased.
It was 5 for 21
10 of those were on one carry. On another carry he gained 5 but would have had twice that had he not hesitated hitting the hole. And there were holes for him on his 2 and 1 yard runs too, but he didn’t get there in time because he was playing Swan Lake rather than football.
On five carries, he did what he was supposed to do exactly twice. That’s why they don’t give him the ball.
he was running tough!
he hesitated on a couple times but when he hit the holes, he hit hard! which is what i expect from him. he didn’t dance too much at all this game. he does need more work but the way i watched him run, he ran with authority more than “swan dancing.” you’re expecting big yards from him every play, but take everything into account like did he run towards a blitz, did he run where the defense was expecting him to run, our OL, did he have enough time in the first place to get to the hole or make a play?
and to respond to your post down below, i watch PLENTY of tape on him, especially recent tape. but people are never satisfied with him until they see a 100+ yard game, which might not happen too often considering the type of offense that we run, and we expect him to make big plays every time he touches the ball regardless of how the defense reacted to it and every other thing to take into account.
I do yell and criticize him from time to time, like dancing, not hitting the hole right away and pounding the ball. I don’t think he’s some kind of messiah. i also know that all RB’s in the nfl dance from time to time, and although maroney might dance more, he is starting to pound the ball and hard! i’ve seen evidence and watched film of him doing that this season!
by patriotguy2 on Oct 12, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm expecting him to run WITHOUT dancing
There’s a reason they’re not called dancing backs. He could get away with that in college, but hesitating in the NFL means you get 1-2 yards, maybe 3, where you should have had 5, 10, or more.
I’m not asking for 100 yard games — that’s your bias imputing false motives to me. I’m asking for him to do what he’s supposed to do and be decisive. Doing what he’s supposed to do twice on five carries isn’t good enough.
i was going to ask you about what you expected from him this season, besides dancing, but thought you might give it anyways.
by you calling me biased, i guess i should’ve put it there. but maybe i am biased regardless if i do put it in there or not. i hear on sports radio people saying how much maroney is a bust, that he sucks. they say he does dance, which i agree that from time to time that he does, but then i think to myself that that’s all they choose to pay attention to, like how some people always pay more attention to matt lights mistakes, and call him inconsistent, which i also disagree.
especially when maroney faced criticismfrom the baltimore game, even though he faced the #1 or 2 run defense in the league.
i now just looked at my previous post, and i said and quote
‘but PEOPLE are never satisfied with him until the see a 100-yard game," i was kinda aiming to the general public’s eye on him and not just you. i may be wrong saying that, but i remember people being satisfied when he ran for over 100 yards in 7 of his games in a row in 07. then he gets inured, ad now he’s back being called a bust.
i’m just sick of it! i’d like to have him get at least 20 carries a game so the public can make a solid assessment from him, instead of judging him on just around 10 carries, and so he can get used to more running and hopefully prove people wrong about being a bust.
he’s not going to get better if they don’t have him run more.
I wonder if he'd do better with a FB or H-back
giving him that little bit more time to pick a lane, and/or giving him less of an option for dancing because he’s specifically told to follow his blocker in. I wouldn’t mind seeing that new TE used as such; he’s a big unit and showed some wheels.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 12, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions
That would definitely help, he had Heath before
In the Air Force, they had the FOLLOW ME truck, so planes from other bases would know where to go if they landed there.
Stick a shiny FOLLOW ME sign on the lead blocker, and Maroney’s set.

Watch the tape before you call me "ignorant and biased"
Otherwise I might have to bring up your having your lips surgically attached to his ass.
Maroney had five carries. He did his job on the carries where he gained 10 and 3 yards respectively. On the carry where he gained five, there was a huge hole for him that was already closing by the time he got there because he hesitated, else he would have had a much bigger gain. On the 2 and 1 yard carries, he just didn’t move.
Our defense?
The Patriots fail to score a single point in the 2nd half after scoring 17 in the 1st and the defense had the biggest problem?
If you wanna say the defense deserves some blame, that’s perfectly alright, but our offense needs to be better than that. We again fail to score 20 points.
Agreed
The Offense was supposed to be the strength of this team until the defense was retooled. Even though they let the Broncos marched down the field twice with the game on the line – to tie and win – you can’t really fault the defense too much for giving up 17 points in regulation.
The offense failed to do their part in the second half. All they had to do was move the ball a bit and put up a field goal along the way. Not too much to ask IMO.
belichick needs to whip these guys into shape somehow
I’m sort of looking forward to them kicking ass in a revenge win next week against TEN, but honestly I haven’t seen anything this year to make me think they will step up. I’m a little worried because if they lose that, things will be looking bad.

BRADY couldn’t connect with his recievers. he was all over the place. i don’t know what happend and i am highly disappointed with this game. denver is good don’t get me wrong. but you could tell that the pats played lackluster. the corners on defense played soft, the d-line missed way to many tackles and couldn’t get to the QB.

The further he threw the ball the worse it was.

Brady's injured
Nothing to do with his knee. We’re going to find out that his shoulder was injured after the Haynesworth hit in preseason and it is bothering him enough that he can’t throw the ball. It just came out this year that Brady was playing in the 2006 Conference championship game with a separated shoulder. No one knew it at the time.
How else to explain all the missed throws and all those runs – especially when our best runner is out???
Keep the faith!
Wait
He played in the 2006 AFC:C game with a separated shoulder? Link? Please?
Maybe...
but then I would’ve expected them to pursue a veteran backup aggressively. They didn’t, and there was talent around, so they could’ve.

Let's be real.
Our biggest asset is Tom Brady and he is playing at about half of what he used to be.
I’m not putting Tom down, but he isn’t the Hall of Fame QB we have seen for years. I hope he gets back to being himself, but I’m having a few doubts. It’s been 5 games and the misses are still aplenty.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
I have mid-season as my benchmark for Brady
we play the Titans, Bucs, have a bye-week, and then play the Phins. That’s four weeks and three more games before we play the Colts. He has to be on by then.
Keep the faith!
i saw
bad overall offense in the second half. good to very good defense, but the offense needs to make 3rd downs to have the defense rest.
Great game today fellas.

Brady can't hit a barn door
Brady is all over the place, Welker saved a few but Brady will admit that it was on him. The defense can give up 17pts a game and with our offense we should still win by 10pts.

Simple, really. We get two free sets of downs and still can’t come away with even three points. Then the defense lets the Broncos drive 99 yards for a TD. Those were the two drives that lost the game.

Just Signed Up
Long time reader, just decided to sign up because of this game. To be perfectly honest, I’m not surprised we lost this game. Disappointed? Of course. We held the lead the majority of the game. Regardless, we didn’t really what was needed for us to win. We were lucky to hold the lead after the 1st quarter mark. First quarter was all Pats. Last 3 quarters were all Broncos.
K. Orton: 35-48 330 72.9 6.9 2TD 1 INT (Shouldn’t even count the pick because it was the end of the half) 96.7.
That’s unacceptable. We went into the game focusing on stopping the run and forcing Orton to make plays and he did everything needed to win the game. We couldn’t stop Knowshon until the Red Zone, which I guess is a “plus” if you want to look at glass half full. There were WAAAY too many missed tackles at the line of scrimmage.
What I saw the whole game was a whole bunch of cushions on the receivers, asking Orton to force passes. Unfortunately, his receivers are much too good and much too numerous (6 players with 3 or more catches) for us to pretend to play defense. I saw waaaay too little QB pressure and waaaaay too much space for receivers to make plays.
Basically, I just want to see the DBs be a little more forceful, the DEs be a little more disruptive and the LBs to be better at wrapping up their man (I think I saw AT miss 5+ tackles).
Pros:
Brady- Seemed alright for the first half. Appeared tired towards the end and was missing some passes, but he’s still getting in the swing and he’s performing better for longer periods of time now.
Mayo- He’s back for some plays and makes the most of them. Great forced fumble.
McGowan- Surprise of the defense continues to make great plays.
Big Vince- It seemed like he was the only person making plays at the line.
Slater- Good job on that Punt.
Cons:
Everything I complained about/everyone else will complain about.
Please get us a pass rusher?

Good points all
Highlight of the game: Vince Wilfork’s “walrus” dive in the first quarter after stopping the Broncos on a 3 & 1 (I think).
Sometimes I’m so happy that we even have DBs that can make plays that I’m hesitant to even criticize them at all. It’s been ages since we’ve had guys who actually go for the big play – knocking balls out, hard-hitting enough to force an incomplete pass, tackling after the catch to stop the YAC, etc… But you’re right, there’s still room for improvement, especially stopping opponents on 3rd down and getting off the field. They looked tired and a step behind in OT.
Mayo was great to have back, but he’s not at 100% yet.
Not enough QB pressure like they’ve shown in earlier games. Orton had too much time to throw and was picking us apart (just like I wanted/expected Brady to do to them.)
Keep the faith!
DBs vs Last Year
Absolutely they’re infinitely better than how they’ve been the past couple of years, but the improvement needs to happen sooner, rather than later. The Bronx just showed a fool proof way of beating the Patriots, given you have the personnel.
On Offense:
Required: 1 Quarterback who can take care of the ball
2 Running backs so they won’t get tired (or 1 AD)
4 Receiving Threats (3 WRs and 1 TE preferable with an additional RB coming out of the backfield)
1 Offensive Line that can the QB some time. Not a lot, but just enough to establish the run.
1) Establish the run. Run away from Wilfork. Other people will stop the RB, but only Wilfork seems to be able to make the play at the line. Everywhere else is a guarantee 4-5 yards.
2) With the run established, overload on receiving talent. Pass on all planes of the field with a run every once in a while to keep the DBs and Ss honest. With the run established, the defense plays safe and stays back from the receivers, giving them lots of time.
3) With the pass established, mix up pass and run and the Pats can’t stop it. With the run set up, the D will continue to keep the 4-3 making the passing much easier, due to our lack of rush (rendering the 4-3 kind of useless, in my view). With the 4-3, that leaves the receivers less covered, but with the pass and run established, the DBs are giving the WRs space to catch.
It seemed every play went for at least 10 yards.
On Defense, basically they’ll continue to take away the run and make Brady work for it and, due to his (hopefully) “rust”, he’ll continue to miss the plays he needs to make.

Great game all around, BTW.

Right
Some site bloggers prefer to institute the wait period to cut down on trolls. We tend not to have as many trolls here, so I’ve held off on it. You guys tend to do a good job of scaring them away, you know, with facts and knowledge?

Problems with that
You’d miss out on people like The Hill, a few posts up, who had something decent to say, and only joined up today because of the game.
Guess you have to take the good for the bad. And beat the bad with sticks. Sticks of facetiousness.

you always crack me up...
So cut it out right now. How can I be depressed after this loss if you keep making me laugh???

No royalty, guys.
Not royal at all. Crowning achievement spotting that. Very per-scepter-ive.
Sigh. Too bad he’s not smart enough to spot them. Oh well. Enjoy, people.

What a Game
Anyone want to take bets on the fact that these teams could meet again this year?

Not convinced
People are suggesting that we might see the Broncos again later in the season. Yeah—back at Denver. Guys, we can’t win there, and we have to get there first. We have tough games with the Colts and the Saints this year, and both of them are away games. The way we’re playing, I don’t think we could beat either one of those teams now. If we put those games down as losses, we may still be okay, but we would have to come away with a sweep of the remaining AFC east games we have to play, and I don’t think that’s likely either. Our defense is scary. Everything we showed them today was simple, basic football that was too dumb to beat a team like Denver. We were outplayed, but we were also certainly outcoached, too. Offensive, in my opinion, is an even bigger problem. Brady has been a head case since walking off the field there in Phoenix, and he’s still “not firing on all cylinders.” When Randy Moss is wide the FRICK open in the end zone, you connect with him. When Wes Welker is wide the FRICK open, you put it on his numbers so he can get some extra yards. Fortunately the Pats have an easy month ahead of them, but they had better win the games they’re supposed to win, or this season is over.
The D isn't too bad, all things considered
The main problem going into this game was the inability of the Pats to put up a lot of points. This was the one game in which it was necessary to have a buffer – Denver is very good at ball-control, but as the pick to Randy Moss showed, Kyle Orton and the Denver offence aren’t of the ability to push the ball through the air in a run-and-gun, Brett-Favre-style offence. They’re strictly ball-control, and the Pats never had enough of a buffer to knock Denver out of its primary offence. It was never a 2-TD game, so Orton had carte blanche just to march his way down the field in his own time and find Brandon Marshall when necessary. If the Pats had connected on a couple of those throws and put Orton and the offence into a situation where they needed to score quickly, the result could well have been very different – turnovers caused by pressure and Orton forcing the ball. Didn’t happen, so didn’t happen.

Thanks Pats Pulpit
Great interactions all week, you guys are a class act over here. I hope we MHR guys are as gracious in victory as you guys have been! Best of luck from here on out…. till we meet again. Feel free to stop on in at MHR anytime, glad to have you.
Brady, coaches, defense.
Brady: Obviously, he’s not the same quarterback. Whether his shoulder hurts now or whether he just hasn’t gotten his rhythm back, I don’t know. But, I hate to say it, he’s the core of the problem right now. Missed touchdown passes and losing the ball behind the line of scrimmage are game breakers. Period. Just think, in the Denver game if he’d hit those easy touchdown passes to Randy and Wes the game would have been a blow out. Yes, blow out.
Coaches: Lackluster play-calling on offense. I don’t pretend to be an X&O’s guy, but the predictability is obvious. Hmm, what’s wrong with that offensive coordinator? Oh wait, he’s the Broncos head coach! Bill could have hired someone new during the off season, rather than take the duties himself. I suspect a little arrogance there, but it’s hard to tell. See defensive play-calling below.
Defense: It’s not the defensive backs fault that they are playing so far off the wide-outs; that’s being called from the sideline… It’s Belichick’s, “bend don’t break” defense and it’s been excruciating to watch at times over the last decade, but in all truth it’s usually worked. Despite those pathetic 90yd and 98yd drive debacles yesterday, the defense did what it was supposed to do: Only 17 points in regulation time. Not bad at all. As a matter of fact, the defense has given up 17, 16, 10, 14 and 17 in regulation during their last five games. With their “high powered offense” the Pat’s should easily be 5-0.
Prognosis: Not good. Brady looks mostly like a middle-of-the-packer. If that doesn’t change the Pat’s are not only out of Super Bowl contention, they may not even make the playoffs. Defense needs some tightening up and the play-calling must improve, but those things seem to be fixable. Tennessee, Tampa and then the Bye week, looks like good medicine right now.
When's the last time...
that we saw the Pats pull out an exotic blitz scheme? I honestly can’t remember, and I don’t like that I can’t. There have to be some teams that the Pats face that would wilt under a heavy blitz, but it hasn’t been tested.
The main issue isn’t even our personnel. I think that we have the perfect players for some blitzing. Put Merri on the Blitz every once and a while and keep McGowan in deep coverage. We’re bound to get some backfield penetration.

Actually, that'd answer it
The game where Meriweather ended it with a sack/fumble against… I can’t remember who, last year. They called three safety blitzes in a row, and the offence burned a couple of time-outs to adjust. I can’t remember a genuine corner blitz or safety blitz since. That’s a long time.

It was the Denver game this year
Wilihite came in on a corner blitz. Got hurt too.

Ah, I didn't see it (thankfully?)
but it does strike me that they aren’t using them as often as I’d expect, especially if they’ve got a depth of talent/speed there, and have three (or four, if you count Springs) safeties to blitz and still have a backfield defence.

Well, I'm going to whine a little bit.
Someone please tell me when the hands to the face call was dropped for the linemen. I can think of about 8 plays when a Denver player had either one or both hands on a Pats facemask, including on Matt Light the play he was hurt. I’m not saying that cost us the game; it didn’t. But Matt might not have gotten hurt if he hadn’t been forced to look at the sky instead of what was around him. If the rule still exists, it should be enforced for all.
"Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory...lasts forever."-Shane Falco, "The Replacements"
The penalty calling so far has been some of the worst I've seen
They miss important calls like your example and are all over stupid “taunting” calls that have no bearing on the outcome of a play. C’mon refs, it’s 5 games into the regular season.
Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit
what about that phantom pass interference call last night
if you caught that one, called against a Dolphins CB covering Braylon Edwards. That bogus call just gave the Jets a touchdown and it didn’t even hurt a team I liked but it was still blatantly wrong.
Keep the faith!
It happens in other similar sport codes, too
The powers-that-be decide they wish to clamp down on one particular issue (diving at QB, for instance, and taunting) and institute a raft of new rules. The refs learn all the new rules, and are over-vigorous in applying them, and because they’re so diligently looking for one thing, they miss the blatant ‘old’ rules that actually decide outcomes of games, etc. It’ll probably improve a lot next year when they find their equilibrium… unless there are new rules next year. Bleh.
