Gloom and doom?

I just checked out the postgame thread, and I was a bit surprised by the mood of the whole thing. Terrible defense, lack of effort, needs to be whipped into shape etc. Had we watched the same game? To me the result was disappointing, but it’s not like the sky is falling or anything. We are still 3-2 with two soft opponents coming up and signs of progress here and there.

The team played really well in the first half, IMO. The offense moved the ball effectively and put 17 points on the board against a really good defense. Much like in the Ravens game they couldn’t keep it up for the whole game, but Brady being able to string together a good half is still waaay better than what he did in week 1 and 2. We keep saying it to each other and visiting fans: There is still some rust to be knocked off. It is just hard to watch the rust-knocking in action.

Two things do worry me about the offense: The loss of Matt Light and the inability to throw the deep ball. Light is not one of the best LT in the league and Vollmer looks like a real talent, so we should be good in the long run. The Titans, however, are coming to town on Sunday, not in the long run, and I would just feel better, if Brady had a guy he knows well protecting his blindside as he continues to battle the remaining physical and mental issues.

What is truly lacking from Brady’s game is the deep ball. Moss was wide open and Brady totally overthrew him, and I can’t really remember Brady connecting deep this year. In a way, the offense is a lot like the Cassell-led offense of last year: Moving the ball effectively, but sometime the lack of ability to go deep will be exploited. Will Brady get this part of his game back? I’m not sure. We have seen good drives and even good halves mixed with bad ones, but deep it’s pretty much all been bad.

It is easy to blame the defense for the loss, and let’s be real: It is not a top-five unit. But who expected them to be? IMO they are still better than they have been the past few years, and since the contributors are now young players it is reasonable to expect them to get better instead of declining further. And they didn’t play bad today! They only gave up 17 points in regulation, they helped build an early lead, and they sure didn’t get any help from the offense in the second half. I honestly don’t know how they did this, because there were a lot of missed tackles, third-down conversions, playing off receivers etc. – but the bottom line is still, that they haven’t given up more than 20 points in any game this season.

Hey if I want to cry in my coffee, I'll cry in my coffee.

No the game wasn’t bad as in Rams bad or Raiders bad. They just didn’t click very well. Maroney ran well, then hesitated (he who hesitates is tackled for loss). Brady made some really poor throws all day, that due to the hands of Welker and others were covered up. But some of the poor throws were drive stoppers and game changers. On defense, you don’t need a 5 yard cushion when the QB won’t throw past 5 yards. Poor tackling on the edge changed 1 yard gains into 1st downs.

Can it be fixed? Yes it can. It looked like they had already fixed these issues, and now it is a step back. We’re onto Tenessee. We’ll win. Will the jet lag going to England allow them to lose to the awful Bucs? Who knows at this point? On again, off again is a good recipe for sitting home in January.

Agreed that it can be fixed

In my grasping to find solace in this, it’s encouraging that we can point to three or four specific particular things that, had they gone right we would have won. It wasn’t a ‘keystone cops’ kind of loss with confusion and a ’don’t even know where to begin’ type of feeling.

Here’s hoping that the Titans, Bucs and Phins continue their tragic trajectories while we lick our wounds and regroup for the Colts.

Keep the faith!

Crying is optional

There was sloppiness, which can hopefully be cleaned up for the stretch run. I still feel a lot better about this team after the loss to the Broncos than I did after the win against Buffalo, because it played better against a better team.

It also hurt to lose to someone with uniforms that are so ugly.

It just isn’t right. Blow the whistle, “Ugly uniforms offense, fifty yard penalty and loss of down”. What could the officials say when dressed like the Good Humor Popsickle Man?

Gaffney

At least Jabar Gaffney changed it up by twisting his socks.

You know what the worst thing is?

They’ve got a big win under their belts in that uniform. They might be persuaded to wear it again. Eww.

If they play another AFL team

We get to see “The Socks”. I believe that would be KC (Dallas Texans) for the last game of the season.

I meant as a choice

Bleh. They might get convinced it’s lucky, or something, and make it permanent. Especially if they’re playoff bound because they won over divisional/conference rivals.

Please no

I am with you guys…those unis are just awful. I hope to never see them again on my team.

Could be the reason for the inability to tackle Broncos

Kind of reminds me of the Bog of Eternal Stench from Labyrinth
Hoggle: And you wouldn’t be so brave if you’d ever smelled the Bog of Eternal Stench. It’s, it’s…

Sarah: Is that all it does, is smell?

Hoggle: Oh, believe me, that’s enough! But the worst thing is, if you so much as set a foot in the Bog of Stench, you’ll smell bad for the rest of your life. It’ll never wash off.

I loved them

though it was like losing to the court jesters

The Pats have only played one team with a losing record and are 3 and 2 they are doing fine I’d be more concerned if I were a Steeklers or ravens fan or even worse a titans fan. That there be some rust on Brady is to be expected and We really lost to a coin flip in this one.

What worries me

is this year’s losses are starting to look like last year. The 5 losses last year(’Phins, Jets, Chargers, Colts, & Steelers) were ALL in the AFC which is death in a tie-breaker situation. I have faith that things will start to go our way. It would really suck to have a good record like last year and miss the playoffs again.

At least Hoodie won't be ambushed...

because he has to realise how important it is to win the divisional/conference games this season, if he ever doubted the importance before. I’d wager a fair amount he’s already weighing up who has beaten whom, how the tie-breakers work out, and how many wins the Pats need and whom the wins must be against to get the playoffs.

Why am I so sure? It’s not me espousing a “Trust in Bill” opinion. It’s just a recognition that Belichick goes out of his way to compensate from the previous year’s mistakes. No WRs in 2006? Get Randy Moss and Wes Welker in 2007. Old, tired linebackers in 2007? Draft Mayo, Crable and sign Guyton in 2008. No defensive backs in 2008? Get Springs, Bodden, McGowan and Butler in 2009.

He’ll be hyper-aware of the fact that the tie-breaker games went against him last year; he’ll scheme some way to duly compensate this season.
