It's Official. Patriots sign LB Junior Seau; Release DL Terdell Sands
The New England Patriots signed veteran linebacker Junior Seau today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Additionally, the Patriots released DL Terdell Sands.
Junior Seau, 40, is a 12-time Pro Bowler, entering his 20th NFL season and his fourth with the Patriots. He was signed by New England last season on Dec. 5 after spending the first three quarters of the season out of football. Seau played in the final four games while helping New England to a 4-0 record in 2008. He finished the season with 29 total tackles in those four games, seeing action as a reserve in the first two contests and starting the last two games of the season.
Seau has played in 31 games with 16 starts for New England from 2006-08. In his first two seasons with the Patriots, Seau totaled 146 tackles (92 solo), 4.5 sacks, three interceptions and five passes defensed.

at the least
Perhaps he can be a source of energy it what has been a rough start.
"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick
After the announcement yesterday, they asked Hoodie
Who had to ask, “Have we announced that yet?” That pretty much confirmed it was a done deal.
No number given fo Seau yet. Derrick Burgess has double nickels.

Hopefully we won’t need to do this next year?
McKenzie coming next year, perhaps draft a stud OLB and we’ll have a solid LB corp.
I think Banta-Cain’s been doing a great job providing pressure and Guyton and Mayo will be a tremendous job in the middle. AT, from what I’ve seen, has been having trouble finishing tackles and has been getting juked out of his socks, but he provides experience and leadership and can still play. We just need to get younger and stop relying on old veterans. I understand injuries can’t be controlled, but I just wish we could get a long term answer instead of having to go to the retirement homes.
However, if he can still play at a high level I’ll support this move.
I suspect that if the LB corp were healthier/deeper
Adalius Thomas would be used more for his pass-rushing than his coverage ability, especially if/when they revert to a 3-4 scheme. The signing of Seau as a MLB suggests to me that Hoodie wants to get back to it, too, so AT could well be hunting down QBs as soon as next week.

Seau is #55, Derrick Burgess is #53.

Do you think he surrendered it, or Seau bought it off him?

I'm thinking he probably surrendered it.
Number of fans with a Seau #55 jersey: >3000 (many in San Diego)
Number of fans with a Burgess #55 jersey: < 3
Burgess was 56 with the Raiders, what does he care?

Here's your answer:
Seau was back in his traditional #55 jersey, having convinced Derrick Burgess to surrender it. "I gave him a little hug, softened him up … but it’s going to take a couple of dinners," Seau explained. Burgess switched to #53, which had been rookie LB Tyrone McKenzie’s, but he’s out for the year on IR and wouldn’t be using it this year anyway.
