Ask Music City Miracles

Hello all,

Jimmy from Music City Miracles here to answer any questions you may have about the disaster that is the 2009 Tennessee Titans.  There has been a lot of talk about Tom Brady not being 100%.  I can assure you that playing the Titans secondary is what he needs to cure his ails.  This is the same unit that gave up 323 yards to David Garrard, except that the Titans had their 2 starting corners in that game.

Anyway, post any questions you may have below and I will do my best to answer them.  Thanks!

Kerry or Vince?

"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

by Mainiac on Oct 15, 2009 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

Well

At the beginning of the year I was all about Kerry because I thought he gave the team a better shot to win because that was the case last year. This year he has been terrible, and since this season is over there is no reason not to put Vince in there.

I don’t think Vince is good, but now is the perfect time to find that out before a decision has to be made about his future this offseason.

That's pretty much what I thought

Either he will develop and get better, or you check QB on next year’s draft to-do list.

The Titans took no prisoners last year.

They’re off to a slow start now, what gives? How much player turnover has there been?

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Oct 15, 2009 10:54 AM EDT reply actions

The only starters we lost

from last year are Haynesworth and Justin McCareins. Obviously losing Albert was a huge deal, and anything was an upgrade from McSuckins. Player turnover isn’t the issue.

There have been some injury issues, but overall it is just a matter of almost every player on the team regressing from last season.

I saw a game earlier in the season (may have been pre-season)

and it looked like the D-line was still pretty stout. I wasn’t sure if the Albert Haynesworth loss was that big a deal.

A couple of plays away

Belichick was animated and quick to denounce it when a reporter suggested that the Titans might only be as good as their record. He kept bringing up that your team lost games by only one or two plays. The Patriots have lived in that situation more often than not – living and dying by one or two plays – so we understand just how close our games usually are. (2007 was a rare exception.)

Is it your opinion that the Titans are a good team that have just flukily been on the wrong end of those few plays, or do you think the team’s problems are deeper and need a bit of an overhauling?

Keep the faith!

Problems are deeper and need a bit of an overhauling

Sure we could have beaten the Steelers and the Jets game was lost on a couple of special teams turnovers, but the same team gave up a billion yards to the Texans, Jaguars and Colts. Flukily we could be 2-3, but that is pretty much the best case scenario.

Most fans anticipate losing the following Titans next year to free agency or just being cut

Bulluck
Vanden Bosch
Crumpler
Kearse
Young
White

It begs the question, if these guys are playing for a new contract, why haven’t they produced?

Okay...

 - Bulluck – Hard to play well when you’re the only one on the team who cares anymore.
 - Vanden Bosch – Too old.
 - Crumpler – He’s playing about as well as last year.
 - Kearse – Old. Still, he’s also playing about as well as last year.
 - Young – Not on the field.
 - White – He is playing well. But he’s not on the field often enough to show what he can do.

As A Titans Fan,

The Titans were a play or two away from winning against the Steelers and the Jets. Specifically, in both games, special teams lost the game.

The rub of frustration, I think, for Titans fans is that we have been demolished by our three division rivals – Colts, Jaguars, and Texans. These are teams that historically, we play well and expect to win the majority of time.

The fact that we’ve been so incredibly manhandled by the teams we know the best, creates the feeling that we’ve lost our sizzle.

In my opinion, the loss of Albert Haynesworth has been monumental. If you’re a statistical junkie, you know the Titans over the 2008-2007 season ranked in the top 5 for defense when Haynesworth played. When he didn’t, the Titans defense was average to below average which is the case this year.

Kerry Collins is ranked dead last in the AFC in passer rating (64%) and INT’s (7?). To many fans, including me, there’s enough justification to insert Vince Young. As you remember, in 2006 in a similiar situation, he was given the starting job and rallied the team to a 9-7 record. Is this the magic bullet for this season? Who knows. But as a fan, you have to expect your team to make necessary changes to produce results.

I think the key matchup this week is the Titans banged up secondary versus Welker and Moss. Looks like Finnegan will not be playing, so i would be shocked if the Patriots don’t reign an arial assault like bombing Vietnam. We may even hear Belichick mumble to himself, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning?”

The best chance for the Titans will be a 250 yard rushing game from Johnson and White. If that happens, then a play or two may win it in the end.

You guys have a tough run attack

We’ve been good at stopping runs up the middle (stay away from Vince Wilfork), but have had difficulty setting the edge around the side. Mostly poor tackling there. If Fisher has been watching film, that’s where he’ll attck us with some up the middle stuff to keep us honest.

If we have to pull the safeties in to play run, then passing opportunities will open up.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

None have been as effective as we'd like.

Tully Banta-Cain has 3 sacks, so I guess I’d have to go with him.
Adalius Thomas and Rob Ninkovich each have 1.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

I thought when the Patriots signed Thomas a couple of years ago..

from the Ravens, he was expected to be “All-World.” Has he been a let down or on par with Patriots fan expectations?

Also, do you guys miss Asante Samuel?

Bring Back Vince Young!

by pigskinpundits.com on Oct 15, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

We missed Samuel royally last year

and were a sucker for the long ball and deep play without him. I think every time an opposing team made it to the red zone they scored. 3rd and 15? No worries, you’d make it. That was a frustrating year and I think fans wished the Patriots paid him because we ended up with an overwhelmed, underwhelming Ellis Hobbs and some WR escorts JAGs. I would have been sadder to see him go had he made that one key interception that counted in the SB, and if the Pats actually had a replacement plan for him.

This year it’s a much brighter picture. Rookie CB Darius Butler made some huge plays in key moments against the Ravens, without drawing a flag, and I hope to see more of him. Our safeties have performed better than expected too, with overall terrific performances by McGowan and Meriweather. They’ve made their mistakes, but on the whole I’ve been pretty pleased.

Keep the faith!

Good summary on the DB's

Overall, how would you rate the total defensive effort?

sounds like Wilfork is the run stopper and the defensive backs are improving. Doesn’t sound like there is much of a pass rush?

The Pats have been running out of a 4-3

mainly because of injury issues – the starting MLB, Jerod Mayo, had been out of action for a month. That meant the 3 linebackers were dropping into coverage and the pass-rush was supposed to be generated by the DEs – except the New England DEs are the 3-4 DE types, who are supposed to hold up the line and generally be big and strong, not quick Julius Pepper-types.

Thus far, the pass-rush has been situational and package-based, subbing in Tully Banta-Cain (who is more of a small OLB) into DE. He’s got 3 sacks on the season.

This may seem general and already asked, but I must...

What the hell has happened to the Titans?

Beer is good! And stuff!

by R_Adragna on Oct 15, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

Mixture

Loss of a veteran anchor DT would hurt most teams – just ask San Diego. Add in uninspiring playcalling in general and marginal QB play in particular, and a leaky-when-under-pressure secondary, and the team has been unable to make the game-winning plays in 5 consecutive games in 2009. They’re still a good team, but their record reflects the fact they can’t get it done when it really counts – the last few minutes. Forever in the hunt, but not capitalising on opportunities, where they would have last year.

by Comedic.Sans on Oct 15, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Excellent summary

Although I would have to add, coaching has been a sore spot as well.

You could say the loss of Schwartz as Defensive Coordinator has been felt, but probably the most glaring deficit is Fisher.

It seems to me, Fisher is living in a state of denial when it comes to gameplanning as well as motivation.

Some fans might argue Fisher has lost the team. He certainly is losing fans.

It might be time for a seismic shift in philosophy in Tennessee. There’s a solid core of young talent to build on, it just seems a different approach might be needed to optimize their talents.

Were I to guess

they might pressure the screens by bringing safeties closer to the line and hoping for the possibility that Brady still can’t find Moss on the deep ball. They could also blitz a little more than usual, to throw Brady’s timing off – his usual blitz-coping mechanism is a heavy dose of screens and slants, but the timing and chemistry hasn’t been quite there yet, and the Titans might hope for that trend to continue.

i hope

the pats dont feel as unenthused as i feel about this game

by sirpinochle on Oct 18, 2009 3:04 AM EDT reply actions

At least Tom has an injury depleted and/or rookie secondary to throw against

This might be the week he finds his rhythm – he couldn’t ask for a better opposition to get his long ball to Randy Moss and Joey Galloway going, finally.

Also, might see the return of the 3-4 – and that means edge-rushing LBs. Sacks! Adalius Thomas doing what he’s paid for! Fake enthusiasm!! Exclamation marks!!

Maybe enthusiasm? Dunno.

as reported from MusicCityMiracles

the weather in Foxboro today is windy, wet, and in the 40’s????

If so, will that slow Brady to Moss?

Bring Back Vince Young!

by pigskinpundits.com on Oct 18, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably

If Brady were in top condition and had recent form with Moss (basically, 2007), no, it wouldn’t slow him down, because they practice and train in it. At the moment, perhaps. He’s been having trouble in good conditions, and although he’s had an extra week to get comfortable and fit, the weather will make things just that little bit more difficult, and I don’t think he’s going to be 100% this week when he was so far off last week.
