Post Game Thread: Patriots defeat Titans, 59-0
What can be said. On a snowy October day, our New England Patriots unleashed some hurt on an 0-6 team. I don't, in any way, shape or form, think this is representative of how they will do against Miami, NYJ, or Indy. But, we did see Tom Brady throwing well in very crappy weather. That's a good thing.
At any rate, discuss.

How would you rate maroney's performance overall, and why.
i give it a B to B+ because he didn’t dance TOO much this game, picked up big yards, had good-great vision, and ran more hard than i seen him this season.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Still a little too much dancing
But he actually ran today. That TD was exactly what he’s supposed to do — you could see him watching the hole, waiting for Vollmer to get there and make his block so he could take off. Last week he would have stutter stepped into the line and had nowhere to go.

He ran forward going straight, turning sideways, and running backwards
His feet kept moving.

BJGE+LoMo
Hopefully this was a result of actual emergence instead of a result of terrible competition and bad weather. Great job, I saw a moment where LoMo was about to start dancing in the backfield and then burst for a gap. Didn’t gain more than 4 on the play, but it was good to see the gears in his head churning.
I still wish BJGE would get more touches during actual games.
Assuming Freddy’s gone, we have:
Sammy Morris, who is possibly injured, for catching from the backfield
Faulk who is the best 3rd down RB ever ever ever
LoMo who, hopefully, has re-learned how to run
BJGE who can run as well.
I’d like to see LoMo and BJGE splits carries (or 75/25…sharing someway) on running downs, Sammy Morris on passing plays on 1st/2nd downs and Faulk on 3rd. I think that would be awesome.

That’s just hilarious. And they had a total negative yardage in the pass game, on a day where Brady and even Hoyer put up yards.

Only real Cons that I can see...
C. Johnson went 17 for 128 (7.5 y/c) and a long of 48
J. Ringer went 7 for 47 (6.7 y/c) and a long of 32
I want to attribute that to the weather, but I think we’re going to have to improve that stat line.

Which should be taken into consideration. What’s a 40 yard ramble at midfield if they cough up the ball on the next play?

we're ranked eleventh in defensive rushing yards.
that is, imo, above average.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rank is based on total yards
That’s a lousy metric because it doesn’t account for time of possession.
Look at yards per attempt. That’s a much better measure to rank by.

so yeah.
we have around an above average run defense.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not even close
Which team is better on rush defense: a team that gives up 120 yards a game when their team has possession for 30 minutes or a team that gives up 100 yards a game when their team has possession for 40 minutes?
You’re saying the second team is better, but they’re giving up 5 rushing yards every minute the other team has the ball while the first team is only giving up 4.
You’re relying on lousy metrics for rankings. Both total yards and yards per game fail to account for time of possession, and the Pats have been dominant on time of possession this year.
A much better metric to rank by is yards per attempt, which is resistant to time of possession. Coming into today, the Pats were 22nd on rushing defense by yards per attempt. That’s below average.
by RSNexile on Oct 18, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah but they got more yards off of us, which a great rushing defense will not do.
that’s the hole point of a great run defense isn’t it? to not allow a whole bunch of rushing yards? i’ll take the team that gives up less rushing yards a game(which imo matters more than yards/attempt) than a team that gives up more rushing yards, any day of the week regardless of time of possession.
how about this scenario:
1) 20 att. 100 yds. 30 min.
2) 30 att. 120 yds. 40 min.
what scenario will end up with your team giving up less yards?
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
a great defense also keeps the offense off the field
which yields to your ToP factor. which also means that the team that kept the offense off the field 10 min.s shorter than the other is better as well.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What you're really saying is that Tom Brady is the most valuable defensive player
The defense hasn’t been keeping the other team’s offense off the field. The offense has been keeping the other team’s offense off the field.

i have not seen so many 4th downs in a while
last year, and year before, if it was 3rd and long, the pats soome how usually gave it up. comparing them from the last two years, this is a great defense.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is a mediocre defense
They miss tackles, were 22nd in yards per rush against coming into today (and will be worse after this week) and 16th in yards per pass play coming into today (and will be much better after this week).
Overall, they’re saved by some big plays — which they had disproportionately today, though they deserve credit for them in general anyway — and by other teams’ poor decisions, especially in the red zone. But to call this a “great defense” is just absurd.
by RSNexile on Oct 18, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
today they did.
but the last few weeks they were making great tackles! i haven’t seen so much great tackles since 06, maybe. but they tackle a lot better than the last couple of years,

Is it just me...
or do there not seem to be any truly overwhelming defences around? The Ravens… aren’t. Nor are the Jets. The Steelers look lost without Polamalu and a pass rush. The Vikings are pretty sharp, but still look susceptible to the pass. The Giants just got burned by Brees and the Saints. Whether the talent is down on D, or up on O, or the rules are throwing the balance out, there aren’t any truly shutdown Ds around. It’s all Pats style bend-but-don’t-break and soft run defences.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 18, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll take team #2 -- they're giving up fewer yards per attempt
Frankly, team #1 sucks — 5 yards per attempt will lose you far more games than you’ll win.
And how about a team that does this in six games:
193 yards, 5.4 YPA in 21 minutes
96/3.6 in 28 minutes
116/6.8 in 25 minutes
58/3.4 in 20 minutes
117/3.8 in 29 minutes
90/4.7 in 23 minutes
That’s three good games, three poor games. That’s not a great run defense, but that’s the Pats this year.
by RSNexile on Oct 18, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if these are our game
i’ll give you buffalo
2nd: against the jets and there running backs, that’s VERY GOOD!
3rd: michael turner got that much? if he did then the pats failed in the running defense.
4th: against baltimore with rice and mcgahee, thats REALLY GOOD.
5th: against denver, eh that may have been expected so they did a good job against denvers running game.
6th: against chris johnson, THATS GREAT!
of course we only gave up 100+ yards in 3 of 6 gams according to you. that’s not too bad.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
team #1 in my scenario
couldve been stoped at 3 yards most of the time, then break a big run out, which can make the average bump up. big runs can happen, and despite the yards a carry, the defense did its job by stopping the 3rd downs this year. it’s not like they’re giving up 5 yards every time he runs. they make the stops. how about my other stats?
gave up only 1 rushing TD all year, and only 1 run has been over 20 yards and only 1 run that’s over 40 yards.
that’s VERY good. is it not?
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

But look at the average yards per carry. 4.4 y/c. Look at the teams worse than that. None of them are contenders, apart from the Giants and, maybe, the Falcons and Chargers. None of those teams have beaten a team worth writing about.

You didn't read what I said.
Look at yards per carry, not yards per game. There are only 11 teams worse. That means the Pats are below average. The teams worse are combined for a 21-39 record. Take out the Giants, who have beaten teams with a collective record of 8-21, and the teams are a 16-38. Basically, the Patriots are in very bad company.

whoops your right on that!
but i think yds/game is more important. and apparently the nfl.com agrees with me.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yards/Game depend on so much more
that it is a poor show of how the running backs actually running. A team that has high yard/carry will usually be able to control the clock and, thus, control the game. A team can average 150 yards per game, but if that comes with a low yards/carry, then that means their passing game isn’t effective either. On the other hand, if you average 150 yards per game with 5 yards/carry, then you are controlling the ground, opening up the receivers and controlling the game.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
giving up 150 yards is a lot.
if a team gets 75 yds on 15 carries, i’d say the defence won. due to the fact that they onl gave up 75 yds in the game, which most likely means that the running back probably 1 or 2 big runs to keep the average up.

Re-Type
but he had 5 yds a carry right?
that totally means the run defense sucks regardless of anything else.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
75 yards/15 carries is 5 yards per carry
which means that there’ll be an average of 35-45 snaps taken by the QB. If you’re averaging 5 yards per carry and you’re only getting 15 carries, that means your QB is playing exceptionally well, or you’re playing from very far behind or the team you’re playing is also averaging 5 yds/c and has a better QB.
And I’m reading your posts below this one. No one here said that the run defense sucks. We’re saying that it is the only weakness shown in this game. I think most reasonable people would prefer to have a low yards/carry because that means that means the opposing QB is having to make plays. I’d take a RB who gets 5+ yards/carry and 75 yards a game over a RB who gets 3.5 yards/carry and 100 yards a game. Why? Because it means the RB takes less hits. It means the RB forces the defense to respect the run a lot more. It means it opens up the passing game. I think it makes the team much better if it can establish a viable rushing attack and can support it with a lethal passing attack.
Of course, the Titans didn’t have a passing attack to support the run. But look at the other teams who have. Look what Sophomore QB Flacco almost did to us because of Ray Rice’s play making abilities? Look what the Broncos did? Moreno kept us honest and allowed Orton to pick us apart.
A strong running game allows the passing game more time and space. High yards/carry are usually representative of a good running team. High yards/game shows that the team needs to rely on its run instead of its passing.
Also, look at the teams with better defensive rushing yards per games. They’re all teams who play from ahead. They’re all team with extremely potent offenses that force teams to go to the air to win games because they can effectively put points on the board. Yards/Game shows how the game was being played. Yards/carry show how the run defense is playing.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, teams with terrible yards/game...
…are also terrible teams, I agree. But that goes with how the game was. All those teams with high yards allowed per game have skewed statistics because they’re all being so blown out that other teams try and run out the clock which, of course, inflate the statistics.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
first of all
flacco did not do THAT well against us, and neither did the running game. i know you may say that i’m paranoid, and i know that if you take the 50 yard run out he’ll still have around 5 yards a carry, but he didn’t make a big impact at all besides that 50 yard run. and flacco, i think, didn’t even eclipse the 210 yds mark. we all LOVED how our defense did that game. we all were amazed that the D was able to do what it was doing that game.
i saw moreno get stopped after 1-3 yards a lot that game, but he made some big runs that boosted his yds/carry average. ortan was not bad, but he made the right plays when needed, and we gave him a few plays when we shouldn’t have. i was dissapointed in our defense that game.
I do agree with you last paragraph, but in terms of “doing your job,” our defense does its job on both the pass and run, gets the 3 and outs, etc. also our offense wasn’t so dominating the last 5 weeks, and our team pretty much had to rely on our defense to get our offense on the field to get points.
for the past 5 weeks, our defense was the only thing standing out, and the main key to keeping us in the games so brady can try to get us a winning drive going. and our defense has done its job VERY well. they stopped the pass and stopped the runs very well, but its not invincible. they will let up a few big passing plays, just like that they will give up a few big running plays.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
which is why the yards a carry is skewed
due to the fact that the running back may just get 3 yards, 2 yards, 4 yards, 3 yards, then all of a sudden 15 yard run. then its 5 att. for 27 yds. 5 yds a carry.
that’s why that statistic can be skewed.
knowing that, i look at what matters most: the yds/game. because in the end, they did their job regardless.
by patriotguy on Oct 18, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Still,
A RB with a high Yards/Carry takes pressure off of the QB. That’s indisputable. A team with high Yards/Game can reach those yards in many ways, even if they’re not in a winning fashion.
We’ll continue to disagree, but I still feel that yards/carry show better how the defense did against the run the entire game. Yards/game, in my opinion, are a product of how the team did as a whole and not just how the running game performed.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

lets just say that they’re both very important in certain ways and/or situations.

I disagreed and agreed with you
Yes, I agree that rushing yards/game is an important stat. It tells how the team did as a whole.
However, I believe that the rushing yards/carry allowed does a better job of showing how the defense did against only the run and not as a whole defense. Our complaint is about the run defense giving up too many yards per carry and not about the entire defense.
Yes, those outlier rushing plays that go for 40 yards still count towards yards/carry and, whether it’s good or not, those yards count towards yards/carry. If the Patriots can get rid of those huge carries, then the yards/carry will decrease. Blah blah blah.
Rushing Yards/carry = rushing defense
Rushing Yards/game = defense as a whole and the tone of the game.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'll end on this note of disagreement. will not post after regardless.
rushing yards/game is only the the rushing defense because its RUSHING yards a game.
rushing yards/game still depict a yards/carry average, which strengthens my point that i just made.
regardless if its 2 yds/carry or 5, if he doesn’t get more than 100 yards, then i’m happy.

Maybe, but then you'd expect
that the Colts, Saints, Giants, Chargers, Packers and Vikings could all do a similar number on the Titans through the air. So that’s basically saying that all the teams rated above the Pats last week would be expected to do the same things the Pats did this week. I can’t see how that would bump the Pats up many.
Now, if they’d done that against the Giants, a la the Saints, that’d get them in the top 3 or 4.

Its beginning to feel like 2007
This game reminded me of the destruction of Arizona last December. Tennessee was bothered by the weather. The Pats were horny to play. Pats receivers caught everything in sight. Brady is finally sharpening up. Sebastian Vollmer and Logan Mankins make an outstanding left side. Edelmann continues to improve. Randy was obviously all world. There is still some hope for Maroney. The preseason ends next week when Belichick destroys the Bucs in front of the queen. Then the real starts. It is begining to feel like 2007.

I think the Saints O-line is underrated and better than the Pats
Seriously, even when Brees was having an off day, it wasn’t really due to him being pressured. He’s had a pretty cruisy life in that gigantic, inviolable pocket. Just think about this – how many opposition players have been penalised for roughing Brees? Almost none – they just aren’t getting to him.

I feel like the Saints would beat the Colts 1v1
But I feel like Peyton is still performing better than Brees. I’d take Peyton’s consistency any day.
However, the Saints have shown they don’t need Brees to win which shows how they’re a much better team than the Colts who have shown they NEED Manning to win.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know about that "more/better weapons" thing
Brees’s receiving corps is – Meachem was a 1st; Henderson was a 2nd; Colston was a 7th rounder, Moore was undrafted.
Manning has a similar receiving corps in Reggie Wayne – 1st; Collie – 4th; Garcon – 6th; Basket – undrafted.
TEs? Much the same – Dallas Clark and Jeremy Shockey were both 1st rounders.
HBs? NO has a 1st rounder in Reggie Bush and an undrafted pickup in Pierre Thomas. The Colts have got two first round picks in Addai and Brown. All four can catch passes pretty well.
They seem to be pretty much exactly the same composition of players, it’s just that the Colts guys are less recognisable because the Saints guys have had a season longer.
They’re close enough I don’t think the skills of the guys Brees and Manning are throwing to factors into it much, if at all.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 18, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wasn't doing a round by round comparison between players...
Basing Colston’s worth off his being a 7th rounder is doing him an injustice, and is ranking Moore off his undraftedness. Factor in experience and actual on-field production and I’d give the Saints the nod 9 out of 10 times. I may have to concede the “more weapons” comment, I’ll just change the “more/better” to “more experienced”.
And even if you feel like their offensive rosters are a draw, Manning is still having a better year, in my opinion.
by The Hill on Oct 19, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, I didn't mean it like that
I just wanted to point out that good QBs (like Brees and Manning) can and do get great production out of guys who’ve slipped in the draft, like Colston and Garcon and Collie. I just think that rating them lower because you don’t know their names is ignoring the fact that Colston himself was a bolter as a rookie – he was 6th on the depth chart and made his way to a starter through training camp and pre-season, from memory. Garcon and Collie have been similar enough that I’d rate them on a par to Colston, albeit with less experience. They’ve got the skills and athleticism and most importantly, a QB who is good enough to utilise their positives and hide their negatives.
Manning’s been more consistent; Brees has been blindingly amazing on occasion. I edge towards Brees based on the teams he’s blown out of the water – he did just annihilate a Giants team that isn’t significantly different from the one that shut down the 2007 RoboBrady. If Manning can do that to a top-10 team, on top of his consistency, I’ll give it to him instead – it’s that close.

Maroney
Had to comment on Maroney’s game today. He looked like the 2007 Maroney we all knew and loved, scrabbling for those extra yards, running vertical, finding holes, etc… but I have to point out something. Did you see the size of the holes he was running through most of the time? How much credit for that goes to Sebastian Vollmer, as opposed to the lousy Titans defense? I thought Vollmer came up big, literally, today.

Are we seeing a changing of the guard? (Or, in this case, changing of the tackle?)
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably not yet
Matt Light’s still being paid, and he is an ex-Pro Bowl tackle. Vollmer can still learn, and he’s useful as a bench player because he can play both sides. I just expect him to get more reps from now on.
The thing that might keep Vollmer off the starting lineup is that he’s good and he’s capable of playing both sides. Hoodie can trust him, and he can also use an extra game-day roster slot on something else, if necessary. Benching Matt Light means he’d need a RT on the bench, too.

Couple Questions from the Game
1) Butler started over Springs. What does this mean? Are they giving Butler reps against a weaker pass offense, or has he earned the starting position?
2) Thomas was a healthy scratch. What does this mean for our linebacker core?
3) Vollmer’s excellent performance. I’m sure he won’t be replacing Light this year, but is he going to see more reps as the year continues?
4) Moss and Welker were awesome and Edelman and Aiken did a passable job. Which player is going to emerge as the dependable 3rd receiver? I think Aiken will be seeing much more time.
by The Hill on Oct 18, 2009 11:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
My thoughts
1 – Horses for courses, maybe. Springs can cover Safety, and I remember seeing Sanders is still on the injury list. Tennessee also seemed to miss a big, physical WR, which is usually the player that Springs draws (the whole TO rivalry thing being a case in point) and it may have been he was useful as a package player today than something else.
2 – This seemed to me to be a disciplinary or family-related thing. He missed practices this week for non-injury reasons, so whatever happened was protracted and kept him from practicing/game-planning, etc. What happens next week in terms of practices will tell a lot.
3 – He’ll get more reps, but I don’t see him outright replacing Light yet. He’s too valuable as a bench player who can cover both sides – he leaves open a slot for an extra linebacker or D-back or whatever is necessary for the week.
4 – 50/50 torn between the two. Edelman’s definitely got some use, and Belichick seems to have a scheme of down-and-distance to put him in. I’m not sure there will even be a traditional 3rd WR – it might be Aiken in as third for a particular game situation, and Edelman in for others.

4. Do you think Belichick will just keep benching Galloway until Brandon Tate comes off PUP?
Keep the faith!
by Marima on Oct 19, 2009 7:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm still hanging out to see how Tate is
They would need to put him into practice for three weeks before they can activate him, so if he’s out there, then there’s a good chance they intend to use him. The fact that Galloway isn’t even making the game-day roster means it’s just that little bit more likely – even if they activate Tate, they don’t have to use him, and all they lose is Galloway’s pay. In the meantime, Tate gets to do whatever he’s physically capable of, picks up the Pats system, and can be used if necessary. Considering he was considered first-round talent before his injury, if he’s able to be used, they’ll want him. Especially since he’s a stud of a returner – he wouldn’t even need to know the complicated pass system and they’d get value out of him being there, which is more than they can say about Galloway at the moment.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 19, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
DON'T LOOK AT THIS GAME AS MUCH
1. Maroney still dances
2. There was no pass defense
3. Vollmer didn’t let anybody get to Brady did he and the one thing that is known about this titan’s defense is they can get to the QB. Not much else but that is big and adds more value to Vollmer’s performance.
4. If we win out then I place value on this game as the offense finally findings it’s groove bec the defense was that bad!

On another note...
…the Steelers manage to squeak out a win against the Detroit Housecats and only beat the Titan team 13-10!
Seriously, I understand that you’re trying to troll, but the same old story is just that… same as it’s always been and it’s getting old.
I see nothing wrong with what the Patriots did. They eased up, as everyone has said. First half of the game is fair game for everyone involved. Let’s see how all of the scores happened:
1st Touchdown: Maroney ran 45 yards. First touchdown of the game, no need for an excuse.
Score: 7-0
1st Field Goal: No need to explain, getting points early.
1st Quarter Score: 10-0
2nd Touchdown: Brady for 40 yards to Moss. Still early, no need for reasoning, right?
Score: 17-0
3rd Touchdown: We started within their 30 yard line. 2 plays, Brady again throwing the long pass to Moss. What do you expect? Stop playing after getting the ball 10 yards out of their Red Zone?
Score: 24-0
4th Touchdown: Tom Brady threw a Screen pass to Faulk. A screen play. How is it the Patriots fault that the Titans couldn’t tackle him? 33 yards.
Score: 31-0
5th Touchdown: Alright, now I can see the “running the score” complaints starting to come into play. However, due to the past couple of weeks, it is clear that TB needed some work on his deep pass as ALL of us have said. What happens? Brady to Wes for 30 yards. He was wide open. Sure, maybe BB could have called different plays, but if we want Brady back in shape, shouldn’t we continue forcing him to make the plays that were troubling him? What better practice then against real “competition”?
Score: 38-0
6th Touchdown: Set up by Tennessee’s 20 yard punt. We got the ball on the TT’s 49. Again, is that our fault? Okay, you’re argument is that it’s in the 2 minute mark. What do we all see? Brady being forced to manage the game, something that he’s struggled in the past couple of games. Result? TD2 to Wes.
Halftime Score: 45-0
How can people complain for Brady playing for half a game? What have all the “analysts” been saying? Brady’s still rusty. He’s washed up. He’s not the same. What did he do? In a half of football, he tried to erase all that questioning. Now that it appears he’s on track all the critics are back.
Second Half:
Do you really expect the Patriots to run out the clock for an ENTIRE HALF? That is ludicrous. What was the main complaint against Brady in the Broncos debacle? His sudden disappearance in the second half. Perhaps that has to do with him cooling over over the half. Who knows? Now we know it’s not that. By allowing Brady to come in after the half, we give him confidence and push him further in this game at a high level (Playing time-wise) than before in this whole season. That is what we need. Brady playing 60 minutes- something he hasn’t done all season.
7th Touchdown: Brady to Moss on the opening drive.
Score: 52-0.
Alright, now they bench Brady. There’s still a quarter and a half of football left. What are the Patriots supposed to do? In the prior quarter in a half they scored 42 points. In the last quarter and a half they score 7. With their back-ups. That’s called easing up.
With Brian Hoyer as the ONLY back-up quarterback on the team, of COURSE they want to give him some real reps on the field. He performed well enough, but where’s the experience if they plug him in the field for a quarter in a half of hand-offs? Let him throw and gain REAL experience.
Sure, the Patriots went for it on 4th downs. Are they supposed to punt when they’re in Titan territory? That’s silly. Going for the field goal is a cheap and easy score. At least going for it on 4th down allows the Titans to provide the stop.
BB and the Patriots could have challenged plays, called time outs and piled the points, but they didn’t. They played a half of football and let the back-ups do the rest. How is that supposed to be “unclassy”?
by The Hill on Oct 19, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brady could have gone back to pass
and Maroney could have tackled him for loss.
Seriously, Brady went into the game wondering if he would ever connect again. When he was able to connect, he was on cloud nine. Sometimes you got to fix your own problems before you can help someone else.
We’ve got Tampa Bay coming up, then

I always wondered about that
If the best pass rush put on Brady all day was provided by his own halfback, would that be more or less insulting than “running up the score”?
And if so, is that more insulting than putting in backups? I’d have thought putting backups in at halftime is like saying “We don’t respect you at all, play against our undrafted weiner rookies in their first game and still watch them carve you up.” Ouch. But apparently that’s the thing to do.

What a Revisionist load of crap!! When you’re up 38-0 you don’t go on 4th down, you punt or kick the FG,,,,you don’t pile it on in the last 2 mins. of the half……you don’t throw down the field to pile it up, you call running plays and punt. Even if you make the playoffs this year, you’re going to have to go on the road where it ain’t snowing and your depleted defense will get torched. You must be in denial…….you went from the darling underdog after your 1st SB win to the most hated football franchise in the country in a few short years….how do you think that happened? Ask Bellijerk the Cheater.

Hah. Still here?
You don’t consider the 3 points “piling it on”, but giving the defense an opportunity to provide the stop is? You want them to start running down the clock in the middle of the second quarter? Why didn’t the Giants get this flack for what they did to the Raiders? They benched Eli around halftime, just like how we benched Brady. It’s not the Patriots fault they weren’t stopped in the first half. You want us to punt in the other team’s red zone? You’re being ridiculous, but that’s okay because you created your account just to troll here. It’s to be expected.
by The Hill on Oct 19, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why punt?
You’re prolonging a game with dead-ball time. And when you’re completing 90% of your passes, there isn’t a real difference between running it and passing it, clock-management-wise, because the ball is barely ever dead. You may as well march down the field with the clock ticking over, to get the game over and done with. When the Tennessee team are completing as many passes to the Pats as they are to the Titans, giving them the ball is just another way to make them look foolish.
Just look at the score. 40-something points in the first half, a dozen in the second. And that was the half the Pats put in an undrafted rookie QB on NFL debut in. Seriously. It’s not the Pats fault that the Titans let him do his thing.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 19, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You hate because you want to hate. Period.
Pats are bashed when they do (their running up the score), they’re bashed when they don’t (Brady’s washed up).
Whatever. Throwing screens and dumps gives the backup some practice throwing. They gain about the same yardage as the runs were. What’s the difference. Hoyer’s TD was 2 QB sneaks in a row. Can’t stop the QB? How can you stop the RB?
Jimmy from Music City Miracles said, “They didn’t run up the score. They could have hung 90 on us if they wanted too.”
I trust his opinion more than yours. If the Titans come back and whoop on us, good for them. They are virtually the same team as last year, but they aren’t gelling. I hope they do find some life. I wish them well.

and get the sure 3 points (isn’t that running up the score though?) instead of going for it on fourth down and giving the Titans a chance to stop them and have the Pats turn it over on downs????
Come on. It’s a no-win with you. And now you’re claiming that the Pats can only win in the snow??? Make some sense man!
Keep the faith!

I know what you're meant to do
You’re meant to march down the field, taking all the time off the clock. You then get to the opposition ten yard line, and take four consecutive knees, thus not running up the score.
Because that isn’t patronising at all.

Or throw in the JV girls squad
and say, “You’re now good enough to play adult men, so watch their daughters kick your butt.”
Somehow, I think they’d rather lose to Brady, Moss, and Welker. At least those guys are Pro-bowl caliber.
The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

Apparently it's the fault of the Pats offence
that the opposition couldn’t break 0 yards passing. Bahaha. Ess-emm-arr-tee.

Riddle me this, friend
When you score, kickoff, and the opposition turns the ball over to you in their own half, how do you avoid scoring? What do you do, punt the ball in their red-zone? Seriously. What can you do?
