New England Patriots cut Banta-Cain, Galloway, Alexander, and Matthews
In the last 2 days, our New England Patriots have cut DE/OLB Tully Banta-Cain, WR Joey Galloway, LB Eric Alexander, and TE Michael Matthews. Where is Hoodie going with this? By freeing up 4 roster spots (we haven't even factored in the potential departure of OLB Adalius Thomas) is he looking to move guys up from the practice squad? Make cap space room for 1 or 2 high profile trades?
What gives?

Bring Back Two Replace Other Two
Alexander and TBC are getting extensions. LeVoir and Tate are replacing the other two.

Good catch!
I missed that in the Extra Points post.

Cap Space
In order to move AD, they would have to free up $2M in cap space (they are $6M under or so, and trading AD would bring all his remaining bonus money to bear on this year’s cap, on TOP of his current salary).
Galloway’s salary doesn’t come off the cap with his release, and they’re re-signing Alexander and TBC. I don’t see how they could make a MAJOR move (like for Peppers).
However, AD is going to cost more than they’re willing to pay over the next two years, I’m betting (~$10M/year). BB traded Seymour because of similar considerations, so maybe there is something brewing.
Bottom line, as usual with the Pats: your guess is as good as anyone else’s.

Good thoughts and info
Like you said, you can never tell with these buys, but I’m stoked to think it’s going to strengthen the team.

Draft picks
are the most likely compensation for AD, I think.
I have NO idea what they could get for him, though.
Maybe the Raiders don’t want their 2010 1st rounder, either?

It's interesting
TBC – I could live with or without. It scares me he’s our best edge rusher right now.
Tate and LeVoir coming onto the rotser makes sense for Galloway and Matthews.
I’m still not sure how much $$ is saved from cutting and re-signing Alexander and Tuskan Raider, but that’s why I’m not in the front office and they are.
Thomas, if he stays – please put him on the edge to rusher the passer.

Looks like the Pats are making room
or something. I thought I’d stop by my favorite AFC East blog (besides the Phinsider) to see what is going on with you guys and trades. The Galloway cut? Weird, I liked him and he was a Patriot.
Don't question my fandominium.

Good guy
He promised to be a decent long ball option to take the heat off of Moss and provide another sideline threat. Unfortunately, he never picked up the system or connected with Tom Terrific. Bummer as I liked him, too.

I wish we would pick him up but I think I read he had a work out in Kansas City.
hopefully he makes the most of the rest of his career.

Old Dog, New Tricks
Joey apparently spent too many years in vanilla offenses or something. To have a 15yr vet out played by a rookie – ouch. hang’em up Joey

I didn't realize that he had a rep
Similar to ex-Colt Marvin Harrison, it’s been said that Galloway didn’t like to be hit. A bit different from Moss who took a helmet to the chin for the team on Sunday.

we have Nunn on practice squad too he looked good in preseason, maybe weshould have kept Greg Lewis? In Hoodie we trust but he is human still.

I was thinking about Nunn.
Would be interesting to see him and his circus catches back with the team.

i dont wanna see nun with his circus catches clearly from an injury standpoint.
while id love to see him play and hes a great reciever. circus catches get you blown up in high school, embarrased in college, and basically murdered in the nfl . im all for spectacular catches as long as he doesnt get murdered by an incoming train (ei polomalu/sanders/meriwether?)
