Marvin Harrison?

I Know he's Knees are washed up.   I know he wants a lot of money.

But Galloway didn't pan out, Edelman is at least slightly banged up, and Tate has never played a down in the NFL.

Unlike Galloway Harrison is experience in working with a Top QB who is precise and demanding, he runs solid routes and he's a very savvy and smart WR.

I think the Pats have to be giving him a look, or should be.

** Also as a fellow SU Alum who watched Marvin live in the Dome 10+ yrs ago, I'm still pissed the Pats took Terry Glenn over Marvin in the draft.   Damn you Bobby Greer, DAMN YOU.  Make amends NE.  Do it.

Marvin was talented

The Colts fans say he basically disappeared from the offense. Team mates have said (off-record) that he is temperamental. And as you said, he’d want more than he is really worth. That’s why he’s still sitting home when some teams are 1 good receiver away from being competitive.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

Belichick isn't picking up any 'outsiders' now

that don’t know the system. That’s just how he’s wired.

Keep the faith!

Tight Ends...

…are going to be huge. I’m expecting Watson and/or Baker to play the 3rd receiver option.

by Richard Hill on Oct 21, 2009 1:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You're probably right, but...

…the Pats are thin at tight end too. After they cut Matthew, Watson and Baker are the only TEs on the roster.

I’m betting Watson plays the third receiver — you can get away with that against Tampa — and BB is risking that Tate will be ready to go after the bye week.

Correction -- fourth receiver

Aiken will be the third receiver.

Can always re-sign Matthews

especially if they do cut or trade Galloway/ trade Adalius Thomas/ don’t activate Nunn or Tate/ cut one of the special teamers. They have to free up that spot for Mark LeVoir, assuming Matt Light isn’t 100%, but finding another roster spot isn’t that hard, especially if the Ravens are nosing around Galloway (hah! more fools they).

by Comedic.Sans on Oct 21, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not really

By cutting Matthews, they don’t have to send the Giants that seventh round pick in 2011. If they re-sign him now, they open themselves up to all kinds of problems.

Besides, they’ve already cut Galloway, they don’t have the cap room to do anything with Thomas even if they were inclined to do something, they’re not going to activate Nunn, and they have three weeks until they have to activate or IR LeVoir. So unless someone reports that they’re working out free agents today, it’s pretty clear they’re going with the guys they have right now because they don’t need anyone else to beat the Bucs. Then they’ll have the bye week to get healthy and prepare for Miami. By then, Tate will probably be ready to go and Light and LeVoir should be able to play.

Brain-explosion

about the Galloway thing – already cut, duh. They might nose around another free agent TE or WR, though, especially if Edelman is definitely out for a while. I also think they might use Watson as a Dallas Clark-type hybrid before Tate and/or Edelman is fit, if only because he knows the system and he has the athleticism. I don’t see Hoodie only carrying two TEs and no FBs if the receiving corps is thin, too.

I could see two TEs and no FB if Morris was healthy

He has filled the role of FB at times, but he’s injured so that’s a moot point.

But while I agree with you in the long term, I could easily see the Pats not signing anyone this week. Remember, it’s just Tampa — they should be able to win this game with the guys they have now. The next week is a bye, so they don’t really have to make any roster decisions until the week before the Miami game.

And that gives them two weeks to evaluate Nunn and Tate

and decide what they’re going to do, yes. I see Tate as the main option, especially with Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris out. They’ll want to limit Maroney’s kick-return duties, and even if Tate gets bumped down to fourth or fifth receiver, he can still run back kicks. He won’t even really need special coaching for that.

I don't see Nunn making the active roster

Yeah, he had a great preseason, but he got almost all his snaps against guys who didn’t make rosters. Give him a full year in the system — this year — to develop and he should be able to contribute next year.

Tate, on the other hand, should be ready to play against Miami. He was projected as a first rounder before his injury, so we know he has plenty of talent. In the meanwhile, I’d bet we see Welker and Faulk handling a lot of the return duties on Sunday. Or even better, Slater.

by RSNexile on Oct 21, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

But I bet Welker won’t be taking returns anytime soon. He was injured and, as Brady’s outlet, he’s been taking a LOT of pounding. BB will want his as contact free as possible.

by Richard Hill on Oct 21, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree on Nunn being a development guy

And I do see Tate as being potentially able to contribute to some extent immediately. It really depends on how quickly he can/has picked up the playbook, and how healthy he is.

You could also add Wheatley into the mix as a returner, especially if his defensive snaps are limited because he’s been leapfrogged by Butler. I’m not sure what his health status is, though. He’s a body on the roster who isn’t contributing much, if they don’t use him as a returner.

They've used Chung as a returner too

Butler was on the injury report (ankle) as a “did not participate.” I’m hoping it’s just a tweak, but…

Keep the faith!

I’ve been hearing that Butler was physically ok to practice, but he was a close friend of the UConn player who was murdered.

by RSNexile on Oct 23, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So sad

Yes, I’ve read that too, how Butler was very close to Jasper Howard. Only 20 years old, the same age as my son in his sophomore year.

Keep the faith!

Veteran receiver who was Injured / bad last year and new to the system?

Been there, done that. I see nothing suggesting Harrison will be any better than Galloway. If anything we should pick up a somewhat experience but still young guy to fill out the receiving corps. (Wasn’t that how Gaffney got here some years ago?)

I didn't want to cut GLew in the first place

So I’m going to sulk and say “in Hoodie we trust” in a petulant voice and stamp my foot a little.

The Galloway - Lewis decision

came down to money.

Paying a guy just under a 2 mill to do nothing

Great business decision. Bleh. I guess it’s their gamble to make, though. Watching a replay of GLew’s circus catch from Favre’s bullet is a little rough to compare to Galloway’s “you put your left foot in and you shake it all about” incompletion, though.

Has Lewis done anything since?

Or was that performance just to rub in the irony?

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Oct 23, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's pretty low on the depth chart

so his stats are just that one catch, 32 yards, one TD. He’s sixth receiver, apparently – behind Berrian, Rice, Percy Harvin, Jaymar Johnson and Darius Reynaud – in a team that really ought to run first (and second, and third). Johnson and Reynaud haven’t caught any passes – they’ve only been returning punts and kicks, from the looks of it. So it’s just that performance.

I guess the kicker is that he’s taken hold of the (very) few opportunities he has been given, whereas Galloway looked lost. When he doesn’t know where the back of the end zone is, he’s in trouble. It’s not like it moves (unlike, say, pass routes).

Even for the Eagles Lewis was bottom of the depth chart
