Sure, when it wasn't sloppy football
That’s not going to win in January. The Pats still have some work to do.
Better than the Jets game

If we keep improving toward January, we'll be good
Better than peaking in September!

Sure
And if Matt Light can block guys who move faster than molasses, that’s also a whole new game. Doesn’t change the fact that this kind of effort won’t win in January.
Maybe Light can pick up a secondary career
and steal the cleats of any opposition pass-rusher who’s faster than a crippled sloth.
no... didn't you hear the guys on NFL Network during halftime?
The Ravens were beating themselves
Keep the faith!
all the analysts on ESPN picked the Ravens to win this morning too
It’s the ghost of Rodney Harrison at work – the Pats play better with when disrespected, whether real or imagined.

Funny how consistently teams do that when playing the Pats
Remarkable coincidence that most teams decide to self-immolate only when playing the Pats.
It's Belichick's Sith mind trick

Sounds like a song

revved up like a deuce,
another runner to the right….

Different song, you're looking for this one:
It’s just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,
Let’s do the Time Warp again!

Add that into draft evaluation
Any player who nods his head in time to music never gets near Foxboro. No dancing. Ever. Ever ever.
Well, if you can flop around like that
and still beat a team like the Ravens, good things are in store.

The defense didn't get the stop so much as the offense blew it
We got lucky on that.
The receiver made a stupid mistake
On fourth down, you don’t even worry about making a move. You just catch the ball.

Defense was very up and down most of the games especially one 3rd down
But i gotta give em credit for stepping up when they needed to
If I never see that step to the left and hop to the right again
it will be too soon.
1) drop the pads
2) run hard

Hopefully Freddy slaps him around the head and shows him how
He’s been there, done that. Maroney could, should, must learn a lot. Or else he’s goooooone.
and the thing is,
he said before the game that horizontal running wouldn’t work against the ravens. He was right.

You got us guys!
Tough to beat you, ourselves and the refs like we played today. See you in the post season? Hope everyone stays healthy and our LT is okay in your hospital. Take good care of him, please.

Don't start with the "refs" thing.
But you did spend a lot of the day beating yourselves.
Luckily, you had some company in the opposition.

No kidding
The two calls Ed Reed is mouthing off on — Chris Baker’s catch, which Reed says was out of bounds, and Willis McGahee’s failure to convert on 4th and 1 — were both clearly called correctly. Replays showed Baker did get both feet down in bounds, and McGahee wasn’t even close to a first down.
Further, Harbaugh should have challenged the spot on Baker’s catch if he was going to challenge anything. He wasn’t even close to catching the ball out of bounds, but I don’t think he did get to the first down marker. If they’d challenged the spot instead of the catch, there’s no field goal and the Ravens can tie it up on that last play instead of going for it on fourth down.

Hey look at you -- unqualified praise.
Watch out — you might be mistaken for a fan.
I kid. I’m really excited to see DB start to emerge. As a UConn fan, it’s a rare opportunity for me (kinda like Ray Rice shudder/twitch for Rutgers fans).
It looks like we’ve got a nice posse of safeties. If discipline continues to improve, we could be on the verge of a very, very good defense. I’m kinda excited.

Good game guys
There is no shame in losing to a quality team. Your Patriots played tough and smart and I don’t know any other owner willing to pay off officials so blatantly like Bob Kraft. There’s a man willing to win no matter what it takes…. I kid, I kid.
In all seriousness, I would rather lose a close game to the likes of Tom Brady, than get blown out by some clown who just faced the Ravens on a bad day. With this game, Bellicheck and company made a statement that the Pats are still the creme de la creme of the league. Now I licked ya’s balls long enough…I hope Rex wins the division from ya.

When your D stops the opposition on 4th in the 4th,
you OWE them a first down to close out the game. That was godawful.

I agree much.
The O sucked in the 4th. Almost bad enough to allow a win to be stolen when it should have been well in hand.

Totally. I hate the Jets.
If there’s a game where I’d love to see us roll up like 50 points, that’s the one.
Unfortunately, I think their defense is seriously legit, notwithstanding what the Saints dished out today.
On the other hand, it’s possible that they’ve already peaked. One can always hope.

Jets got it easy
after the Saints. Fish, Bills Raiders, Fish, Jags. Hard to imagine them not beating that lineup until they meet the Pats again.
The Pats have Indy Jets and Saints in a row, the rest of the schedule is cake, barring any surprises.
Looks like the biggest difference in the schedule is we got the ratbirds and they get the surprising Bengals.
The Saints beat them pretty good, which may well make all this just some early season bluster from them. They barelt beat the Titans who are looking bad, and we know the Pats were sorting out a lot when they lost to them.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Jets end up 8-8.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
Pats are going to be the streak-breakers
Someone’s going to have to stop the undefeated Colts & Saints… might as well be New England
Keep the faith!
Fish, Bills, Raiders and Jags
are all fairly physical teams. The Jets might pick up some injuries along the way; coping with starters being injured might be their biggest issue, because if you take out a couple of their marquee players, they’re basically the Jets of previous (awful) years. I’m not sure they’d cope with a Mayo-like injury, for instance.

We're in a good place
3-1 with the Broncos, Titans and Bucs coming up.
Could be 6-1 at the end of the month…

I suspected the Titans would fall off
from last year, maybe go 8-8. But I didn’t expect this bad a start. 6-1 looks like almost a lock.

Hopefully
Although I’d be worried that they’ll get angry/frustrated enough to get up and take it all out on some poor team… and that it’ll be the Pats on the receiving end.

Defense looks better each day
By next year, defense will be one of the best in the league (i know, it’s already good, but add some more maturity to Butler, McGowan, hopefully finally get a look at Crable etc.).
Does anybody get the feeling that this is one year has had one of the best drafts of the Belichick era? Let’s see: Vollmer: franchise tackle, Butler: franchise CB, Julian Edelman, Terrence Nunn, Brandon Tate (that has an ok chance at becoming a future corps by itself), 2 solid DTs in Brace, Pryor, even a franchise long snapper in Ingram.
Also, when did Mike Wright get good? It seems he came out of nowhere in the preseason and has been doing great since.
Wright's always been pretty good.
But with Jarvis Green and Richard Seymour in front of him, he didn’t get a lot of time. Now, with a 4-man line playing a bigger role for us, we’re seeing more of him.

Can't help but think
with Mayo out, Guyton really got a chance to step up big time and he’s been meeting the challenge better than anyone could have hoped. We have real playmakers this year on defense, something sorely lacking in 2008.
Keep the faith!
Can you imagine Guyton, Thomas, and Mayo in the same lineup?
That’s a scary trio of LBs.
Don't forget Chung,
he may be a factor before long.
The Pats signed Wright at a bargain, and are letting him loose now. Smart move.
Warm up the Duck Boats!!!
Lol, actually forgot
Pats oddly have a glut of good young safeties: Sanders, Mcgowan, Meriweather, Chung. Not a bad problem to have.
And you won't be seeing Crable this year
He’s on IR, sadly. So he’ll still be a rookie in terms of experience (albeit the most book-smart rookie around, after two years of studying the playbook).
This year’s draft does look good, although it should be kept in mind that because the Pats jettisoned a bunch of vets, they kept a number of rookies around they might’ve cut in previous years.
Consecutive strong draft classes would be very, very handy. Linebacker heavy for the next one? Heh.
by Comedic.Sans on Oct 4, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Defence
Any thoughts about whether the Pats will revert to the 3-4 when Mayo’s back, or keep the system as-is and stick with the 4-3, perhaps subbing Mayo in for Guyton or finding Guyton something else to do?
It'll depend on other injuries
But I’d like to see more 3-4 at that point. Keep Mayo and Guyton in the middle and have Thomas blitz from the outside half the time.
I'd hesitate on changing it, in the "if it ain't broke" theory.
Guyton might find himself shifting to OLB, though. He’s definitely quick enough, and he’s bigger than Mayo.
I'd like to see them keep switching it up
The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.
by SlotMachinePlayer on Oct 4, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Bound to happen anyway
I meant as a base package. Because Bill still uses a base package, occasionally. Haha.
Agreed
The biggest problem with the 4-3 is that it means the best blitzer of the last couple of years, Thomas, is stuck playing coverage.
