Greetings from MileHighReport - A Few Good Questions With a Broncos Blogger
Greetings Patriots fans! Guru here from Mile High Report checking in as we get set for Pats/Broncos week!
I guess, for some in the media anyway, this is a big game. For me they are all big, especially home games, and I am looking forward to the Broncos facing the challenges that the Patriots provide.
We all know the connection between the Broncos and Patriots, and it goes without saying that the Belichick/McDaniels angle will get played out in a hurry this week. Truth be told, these two teams have a long history going against each other, starting with the very first AFL Game in 1960.
Should be fun to see both teams wearing the throwbacks, though I must say the Patriots old unis are a bit more fashionable than the Brown and Mustard-Yellow unis, complete with verticle striped socks, the Broncos will be sporting.
Anyway, I thought I would stop by and answer any Broncos-related questions you might have. I'm not into smack-talk, there will be plenty of posts on both sites for that I imagine, but if you have serious football questions regarding the Broncos I'd love to read them!
So, got a Broncos question? Fire away! I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered! I'd appreciate a REC so that the post can stay at the top for the week!
Here's to a great week of cross-blogging and to a great game on Sunday!
The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

Big game is right
Conference games are just one step below division games in importance, as we found out the hard way last year, so yeah, this Sunday will be a biggie.
To start, maybe you could tell us what head coach Josh McDaniels is like… oh, wait, never mind. How about, have there been any major changes to the Broncos organization since our last meeting in October, 2008? oops… sorry, got that one too. Hmmm… I’ll have to think about this one.
Keep the faith!
Kyle Orton
What can you tell us about the sudden rejuvenation of Kyle Orton? What is it about him this season that’s making him do so well at this point?
Beer is good! And stuff!
My take
Is that it isn’t so much about what he’s doing as what he is not doing:
1. He’s not taking chances by throwing into coverage (this isn’t new to Orton, he’s always taken care of the ball).
2. He’s not having to get the ball out in under 2.8 seconds because of a collapsing pocket. We could tell through the preseason and the first game or two that he just isn’t used to having a good offensive line protecting him on passing plays.
3. He’s obviously not reading the papers, blogs, etc. Otherwise he would be complaining about his noodle-arm and mediocrity (this is sarcasm…his arm is very decent).

#2 especially
Chicago’s O-Line didn’t help his cause. And that was a surprise especially considering that Olin Kreutz was involved in that unit and the credentials he has.

ANSWER
Peter King might have said it best in MMQB this week -
Now let’s do a mini-analysis of the biggest decision of the off-season, Denver dealing Cutler for two first-rounders and Kyle Orton. It reminds me of the Patriots dealing Drew Bledsoe in 2002 and handing the quarterback job long-term to Tom Brady. Bledsoe, the independent-thinking mad bomber; Brady, the caretaker who’ll follow the gameplan to a T. Just substitute Cutler for Bledsoe and Kyle Orton for Brady and you’ve got McDaniels’ line of thinking. Now, I’m not saying (and McDaniels wouldn’t either) that Orton’s going to morph into Brady, but the amount of negative plays at the quarterback position has been exactly what McDaniels has preached: zero interceptions, zero lost fumbles, six sacks. If Orton continues on his present pace — 3,624 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 59 percent passing (that should be a tick better) — the Broncos will be playing in January.
AS King said, IN NO WAY am I implying that Orton is even close to Brady or ever will be. The point is, McDaniels decided that he needed to change the philosophy of the offense and it was going to take more than just a change in the playbook to do that. Orton will do what he is told and he isn’t afraid to learn, or be taught. At 26, Orton is still young enough to get rid of many of the bad habits he picked up in Chicago and become a solid QB.

Orton has always been a good caretaker
and he had a decent arm in college. Long ball accuracy wasn’t there, but it’s not there with Cassel either and he has a strong arm.
Orton never did well when the they were behind and he had to make plays. McD should help with playcalling there.

So should a solid defence
The Denver d doesn’t look like it’ll cough up points easily, so Orton shouldn’t really find himself in a position where he has to be a gunslinger very often. As long as his defence keeps him within a TD or so of the opposition, he can manage his team downfield without having to resort to Cutler or Favre antics. It’s a good fit for a team that will turn over a lot of ball, with a ball-hawking secondary and strong linebacker play.

Absolutely
Orton will never win many games on his own, but he won’t lose a lot either. Though it is still too early to tell whether it was the right move in the long run, I never understood why Bears fans didn’t appreciate his contributions more.
He would've been absolutely brilliant for them
when they made their Superbowl run. Grossman was a bad fit because he turned ball over (albeit still good enough to get them to the Superbowl); Orton would’ve managed it downfield, taken what was given to him, and let the real strengths of that Chicago team (defence and special teams) win the game outright. Plus it might’ve been fun to see what Devin Hester could do from a bubble-screen.
Orton went a long way this last Sunday
toward showing he can be a come-from-behind QB. Controversy aside, on whether he should have thrown it, his TD pass to Knowshon Moreno was a thing of beauty. It went about 18 yards in the air, and arched probably no more than 10 feet off the ground. And he threw the laser with pinpoint accuracy . . . six inches left, right, up, or down, and it would have been a failed pass. Just brilliant.
And the pass to Brandon Marshall, which will go forever into highlight history, was near perfect. Again, any shorter, and it’s an interception. Any longer, and it sails out of bounds. It was an intentional jump ball for the 6-4 Marshall over the 5-10 Newman.
Without either score, the Broncos lose. They scored 17 unanswered points against a good Dallas squad, and Orton was the central character in that (well, the defense had something to say about it, too). The Broncos hit the jackpot with several of their offseason additions to the squad, and Orton is no exception . . .
BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!
In Chicago, he wouldn't have made either of those.
They lacked the playmakers, and the O-line.

Amen brother.
Where were you like three months ago? hahahaha. We could have used another person with common sense. The guys in chicago thought that bringing in one player will magically make the WR and O-line better. Cutler has been sacked 8 times in 4 games. Last year he was sacked 12 times in 16 games.
Right on.

And what better way to change that philosophy than for McDaniels to take a page out of the book of his mentor? But to be honest, I scrutinized the idea as Orton becoming fodder for foaming-at-the-mouth type defenses like Baltimore and the Jets. Right now, I’ve seen otherwise.
Very fair assessment. Well done.

I don't know jack-all about your defense. Care to summarize?
As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead
Don't you hate it when you look at the opposition's players
and realise you recognise a bunch of them from Player of the Week, Pro Bowls and big plays?
Champ Bailey, Andre’ Goodman, Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill are solid as a secondary.
Andra Davis, DJ Williams and Elvis Dumervil are all capable of big players in the LB corps.
I don’t really recognise their starting D-line guys, but they’re a 900lb 3-4 d-line, and they haven’t given up yards to the run, so you can assume they’re pretty good. And they do have Vonnie Holiday on the bench, and Hoodie seemed to think highly of him this year. If he’s a reserve, the other three must be solid.
yeah, I know Bailey and Dawkins.
It’s the line I was thinking of, mostly, and the lbs.

Great Question. The Broncos made a decision this off-season to improve the defense from the back. With Champ Bailey already on board, the Broncos went and signed Brian Dawkins, Andre Goodman and Renaldo Hill. Josh McDaniels had obviously seen a lot of Hill and Goodman when they were with the Dolphins. The two, along with Dawkins, have been huge editions.
At Linebacker, the Broncos again had a good foundation. D.J. Williams has been solid at a number of positions. The Broncos moved Elvis Dumervil back from D-End in order to utilize his pass-rushing abilities. With his hand down, Dumervil lack of size is a detriment because O-Linemen can get on top of him. By moving him back Dumervil is able to use his speed and long arms to his advantage. The proof is in the pudding – Dumervil has 8 sacks in 4 games.
The rest of the backers we cast-offs from other teams. It is much like the Patriots of a few years ago in that way. Andra Davis was supposedly finished, having struggled the past couple of years in Cleveland and Mario Haggan was nothing more than a ST player in Buffalo. Both have played huge roles for the Broncos.
The D-Line might be the most unheralded of the group. Ronald Fields was the one guy Mike Nolan brought with him from San Francisco and along side are Ryan McBean and former McDaniels High School class-mate Kenny Peterson. While they might not be big-names, they ARE big men and they take up a lot of space.

Nice question...there aren't many in the league who know jack about it either!
Yeah…they revamped that God-awful mess that we called our defense last season. Some of my brothers deny 2008 ever happened, but it did and it was a nightmare for the defensive side of the ball. This year’s product is leaps and bounds better.
Coaching Credit: Mike Nolan – he is calling masterful defensive schemes each week.
Player Credit: Our linebackers – they are making this thing work and enough can’t be said about how well they are playing.
The defense is being called a base 3 – 4 by McDaniels and Nolan, but if we are being truthful, they are using a 5 – 2 look the majority of the time. Like anything in the NFL it gets pretty complicated with how many different looks they have, but you’ll see both formations and then some others.
Linemen: Our NT and DEs are neigh perfect for the job in the 3 – 4. They are eating up double-teams, winning the LOS battle on runs, and pushing the pocket back / opening holes on passes. You probably won’t have ever heard of them, but hey…that’s a 3 – 4 line for you right?
Linebackers: The big hoopla around them has been Dumerville – 8 sacks so far this season. He is one of the top 3 pass rushers in the league right now hands down (I could go on and on about how he is being used correctly, but you wanted a summary). Our ILBs Williams and Davis are playing crazy sick in the middle of the field…like I said earlier, they are making this defense work properly.
Secondary: You might look at their age and think “Slow” but you would be dead wrong. These guys are ProBowlers for a reason and they are all playing sound, destructive, disrupted football. Dawkins is blowing people up left and right (and covered Witten last week superbly off and on). Bailey still has the goods…see his performance last week when Romo tested him all game.
Overall we are aggressive against the pass and very solid agains the run. Dallas brought their 1st rank running offense into Denver last week and gained only ~75 yards on the ground. That was an epic win in my book. Teams are averaging 6.5 points per game this year against our D. While I thought Dallas was a good test of our run D, I’m looking forward to seeing what NE can do against our pass D.

Interesting Question. To be honest, I haven’t seen enough to make a comparison to anyone. One thing stands out, he knows how to run the football. The game is just a bit too fast for him right now but I get the sense that it could slow down any time now and Moreno will bust out with a huge game. Two weeks ago he had his first rushing TD, then last week he caught his first TD Pass. Maybe this week Moreno puts it together and has his first 100-yard Game?!?

I know I say this a lot about the NFL products that either were born and raised in New Jersey or have a strong NJ connection, but I really think Moreno is something special and believe he will be so in the years to come.

And I love him! (wink) Moreno is a special talent and just now starting to understand the NFL game. He had issues of lack of patience and “juking” instead of running downfield early on. He is learning AND he is laying some very solid blocks. He is good in all three phases of the running game: running, blocking, pass receptions. He is going to get much, much better.
Oh and by the way.

I'm happy NE is playing Denver in week 4 and not in week 12
This team is shaping up to be very, VERY dangerous.
As discussed above, Orton is managing the game and not making mistakes…early in the season. It’s very similar to Matt Cassel last year and I would think as the season progresses and the offense gets more comfortable with it’s personnel and plays – especially if Brandon Marshall has bought in – the offense should continue to expand throughout the season similar to NE last year. By about week 10 the full playbook is open.
Defensively they are solid, smart and aggressive. That’s Mike Nolan’s style and a guy like Dawkins fits into that mold perfectly. Dumervill creates havoc and their LBs are fast, this will be a fun game for sure.
My Q for Denver is who is your nickel back, it seems to me that the best way to attack this D is to spread them out where Dawkins impact is minimize and you have more options beyond Bailey.
Our nickel DB, right now, is Jack "MF" Willliams
Normally it would be Alphonso Smith, but he tweaked his ankle and didn’t play last week. I’m not sure if he’ll be able to go this week. Jack is a second year player, who played very well against Dallas last week, and I hope that he can keep it up. I really don’t know that much about him. He played sparingly last year, but made the team because of sparkling play in the pre-season. This year he made the team as the dime back.
The Phonse is a rookie that we drafted in the second round from Wake Forest. He’s been great so far and am very anxious that he’ll be ready to go this week. I think a healthy Smith would do well against Welker, because he’s so smart with positioning and film study, and I can only hope that Williams can be an approximate representation if he has to go again.
This is our team, let's have fun with it! - dmitchell624

Jack MF Williams + Alphonso Smith = love
The scary thing is that Smith was doing a fantastic job as the “small nickel” back, and when Williams came in for him, we lost very little.
Now we get them both in the dime? Better have a good 4-5th wide receiver.
I quoted the small nickel, because it appears there is a “Big Nickel” package that is used a fair amount as well, and I believe it is Wesley Woodyard (can anyone corroborate?). I think the goal of it is to have a light, more mobile linebacker as the nickel back in long yardage situations. I assume to protect the middle, and tackle the dump offs, draws and screens.
Together they create The MF'ing Phonz.................. I like it.

Great catch Mhantra. Yeah, I have seen them do this. I don’t know that they call it a big nickel per say, but that is when Woodyard is typically in…obvious passing situations where his speed is better utilized than Davis’ run-stuffing.

Question for Pats Fans
A particularly sore subject for many football fans is the "Belicheat" episode. Belichick was labeled a liar. McDaniels was labeled a liar through guilt by association. What is the feeling among Pats fans about that?
They taped
which is allowed, just not from the sideline. Other coaches admitted doing the same thing, just not after the 2006 rules clarification. Did Bill lie? Who knows. Does it matter? No.
The NFL said no advantage was gained, Bill and the Team were penalized.
They proceeded to rip through the league like old tissue paper, and were one fluky catch away from a perfect season all the while being under the microscope to see if they were doing anything else. Obviously, the taping wasn’t needed in 2007. Can a video keep David Tyree from making that catch when Rodney Harrison couldn’t?
For us it’s old news, like the Steelers doing steroids, and the Dolphins tampering charges under Shula. If I looked for a little bit, I could probably find some old skeletons in the Broncos closet, too – or any other team for that matter. Not worth
it, dead horse.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Oct 7, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I think what Endzone was getting at is
Many “fans” in Denver labeled McDaniels a cheat and a liar during the whole Cutler fiasco. They used the NE taping drama as justification for those labels, which is a weak argument at best. I think Endzone was looking for some info to discredit those accusations. Sorry to drudge up the past.
by rollinthunder on Oct 8, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Some of the taping was before he was the O-coordinator
so it wouldn’t affect him.
Since they didn’t use the tape in the same game, (and we’ve been over from a logistic standpoint that it would have been impossible to use the film in the same game) it didn’t really give them a competitive edge.
Every team changes their signals on a game by game basis. Also, since most teams have guys scouting signals every game, they usually change them within the game. As Parcells put it, if they don’t they deserve to have them stolen.
One scouting organization stated that the tape would just stream line the process for the next game. It wouldn’t have any information that wasn’t already available. Those guys do this stuff for a living. If Detroit had been caught doing it, the story would have lasted a week. Obviously, they didn’t gain anything. Since the Pats were/are successful, people were looking for a reason other than they’re a good team to explain the wins. But as you guys can see, this type of football is successful.

Absolutely dead horse
Elway threatening to play baseball rather than play for the team that drafted him, breaking some obscure salary cap rules around the time of their ‘98 & ’99 SB victories, allegations that their O-Line used ’dirty’ blocking as explanation for their long tradition of strong running attacks…yeah, every team that has any success has stuff like that.
Thank you

Has Welker lost a step or two?
Or is it just a change in play calling?
Slot and TE passes to the middle and flats seem to be our weakest link on the pass D so I’m curious to see if the Pats rely more on Welker this week.
He doesn't look 100% yet.
So I guess he’s not pushing himself to get the yards after catch that are expected from him, especially not if he’s already achieved a first down. He’ll get what is needed and make sure he doesn’t get hurt, rather than seek everything he can possibly wring out of the reception, which is his usual behaviour.
Welker tweaked his knee in the preseason
and has a quarterback coming back from knee-surgery. No worries with Welker.
Keep the faith!
Plus last week was the first week back
They were taking him for a test spin to see how the knee is doing. It’s gotta be hard for him. The guy never slows down.

I’d ask this question at MHR’s “ask a blogger” post but it has disappeared.
Why do you guys think that so many former Patriots coaches have struggled so much in a HC role?
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!
I wonder if a lot of it was they just weren't that good, and Hoodie's ability covered it up
But! I also suspect it’s because of the nature of the job. HC is a lot of everything – complete knowledge of the offence, defence and special teams, roster and personnel management, staffing issues, economic realities, the whole gamut.
Weis, Mangini and Crennel seemed to be single-dimensional guys thrown in over their heads; one side of the ball only, and no real evidence they had the ability to run football teams as opposed to single units. Most importantly, they also failed in that x-factor – managing 60-odd players in a way that makes an efficient and effective football team. This intangible isn’t easy – hell, Belichick himself had problems with it the first time he was a Head Coach in Cleveland.
By comparison, McDaniels has both the knowledge and the x-factor. He started off as a defensive coach in 2001; he then shifted to offence and QB coach, then became a successful offensive co-ordinator. He also has shown that knack for managing players well in Denver, at least thus far – a lot of the senior players were suspicious with McDaniels at first, but through decisiveness, ability and intelligence he has won them over and they seem to have bought into his system. That’s perhaps the most difficult and most important thing – if the players aren’t with you, no amount of talent can make them play well.
At the end of the day, everyone is answerable to the HC. That means players, co-ordinators and coaches have to have a respect in the HC above and beyond the respect they owe to each other; that’s impossible to generate artificially. McDaniels earned it by cutting the bad apples and showing faith in the players he had left, and bringing in the players he needed to fill out the roster and make a good football team. Mangini, Crennel, etc never earned the respect, and didn’t seem to do things to promote the good of the team.

Mangina, for example decided he would sneak out of town and try to take coaches and players with him
He didn’t leave on good terms. One of the problems of an coordinator turned HC is that it isn’t the same role at all. Head coaches need to handle so much more, including working with the scouting group on players to draft or trade for in free agency.
Because Josh was so classy about sticking with us through the Super Bowl run (many teams wanted to hire him during the playoffs for their crap team), Belichick spent 2008 grooming him for a head coaching job. He taught him the other 90% of the job that he wouldn’t have had exposure to. Belichick was available to him this offseason to answer questions as he took the reigns in Denver. You have Belichick-less ex-coaches and those who leave with his blessing.

And when McDaniels (and Pioli) left NE on good terms
Belichick was of a good disposition towards them in terms of trading them useful players that fit the Belichick/McDaniels/Pioli system. So the new coaches/management not only had Belichick’s blessing, but they also had a few of the resources (provided by Belichick on favourable terms) to work with and settle down a new roster.
Showing Belichick faith and loyalty is repaid in spades.
I'm not sure Mangini was bright enough to ask for it
He strikes me as the type of guy who thinks he knows everything. I doubt he consulted with Belichick on anything when he decided to leave, and I sincerely doubt he put together a 60 question list to ask team owners in interviews, like McDaniels did.
Mangini cut his ties to the team as soon as he could and went straight to an arch-rival. McDaniels stayed faithful to Hoodie and magical 5 pages of distilled Hoodiness. Lessons to be learnt in there? Heh.
What is this 5-page “paper of life” of which you speak? Are you joking? Or does such a document actually exist?
Did HCMcD really have 60 questions for team owners?

It was clear that Bowlen was overwhelmingly impressed with McD, but I’ve never really seen a thorough explanation of why he was so impressed. Although this season is quickly making those reasons apparent.

That's highly, highly disturbing.
Mangini in a little kid’s black ninja uniform, spilling out top and bottom, with a flashlight in his mouth, pink rubber gloves from under the kitchen sink, and a comical black head-band with eye-holes cut in, sneaking in with a Pink Panther soundtrack.
Chyeah. You know you can visualise it.

care of our favourite Elf, Wes Welker.

For us to beat an unbeaten team on the road in a hostile environment calls for a tough one. WE need this 1 for our identity!

Hell. They even have the same base colour on the uniforms. I’m watching you, Denver.
Hey, the Panthers tried it that season they made it to the Super Bowl
Getting introduced as a team, etc… Frauds.

a nice story
about mcdaniels/belichick proving once again that bill belichick is a stand-up guy, not the villain he is made out to be in the press

ok
i love denver always will but i am picking n e this week 20-17 the game will be close and brady has joe montana like queue i want to say some thing to pats pulpit u guys are great smart classly well imfoment and to smp thanks for haveing my back and to marima u are very talented and gifted writer
okay i have cereal palsy arhrtis and chronic fatiue as well i have a grea life loveing folks some days are better that other days i got a make a wish in 2001 saw my favorive team the broncos was the trip of the lifetime i wish everyone couild gotten to enjoy that with me i know some of u hate the broncos and that ok but i bleed organ and bule
One thing to add
You have all showed great knowledge and respect for each other and i feel i must tip my hat, cant say i have ever read a blog with no smack between appossing fans. Great to have a first! Well my point is that i believe every one showes so much attention to Brandon Marshall and he has proven he is big time, they forget denver has other hot rods in the shop that i almost garantee will get a good McD test drive this week. You all know Daniel G. let me ,,,,,,,, McD. introduce you to Peyton Hillis ( I think he will have huge game) Eddie Royal (could be replacement for rod smith and you all know how Bellicheke felt about Rod), Tony ( to fast ) Scheffler, Brandon ( rebound ) Stokley, and even Gabar Gaffney still got some moves. Point is there is still a lot of opptions that have no film to look at except seeing what Mike ( I still miss your OFFENCE) Shannahan directed these boys to do last year and although i am still a sceptic on McD I dont think he is to stuppid to see the talent these guys have ( he did keep them around ) and he will figure out how to use them. Now I am Going out on a limb to call a score I very rairly will do this. As long as denver D slows down the Pats O ( is POSSIBLE ) DENVER pulls out huge win 20-19 in the greatest game this year this will be talked about all season . Thanks and you all have a grea……. well not to great of a weekend.
By the way I know I cant spell and have puncuation problems but thats what i get for dropping out. hehe
I think it's just a recognition of how Belichick schemes his defence
pick out the main weapon of the opposition – Brandon Marshall – figure out how to nullify it. Pick out the secondary weapon – Knowshon Moreno? Eddie Royal? – and figure out a scheme to put pressure on that, too. If it forces Denver onto relying on the secondary or tertiary weapon, that’s all you can ask.
This was apparent in the Falcons game – he looked at the Falcons lineup, and decided that Tony Gonzalez was the paramount threat. The result? TG had one catch for a handful of yards, all game, and the Pats won it.
It’s not really an insult of the rest of the Broncos lineup, it’s just a recognition that Marshall is a game-winner in the style of Randy Moss or Andre Johnson. Giving Marshall ten catches would probably be 150 yards and 2 TDs. Giving ten catches to Eddie Royal would probably be 5 first downs and 80 yards. Belichick is a bend-but-don’t-break kind of guy, so he’ll give them to Royal.
