Post Game Thread: Colts defeat Patriots, 35-34

You can't give Peyton Manning the ball.  You need to keep it out of his hands.  And he proved that.  Whether or not Kevin Faulk had the first down will be discussed ad infinitum.  Whether or not Belichick should've gone for it on 4 and 2 will be questioned.  Discuss.

Right, that makes a *lot* of sense.

Punt the ball, given Manning’s two-minute drill 70 yards to eat up, watch him churn the yardage over like he’d been doing all fourth-quarter, and you’d still be crying about the money you paid to watch home games.

I didn’t realise paying for seats in a stadium in Foxboro gives you special privileges for complaining about decisions that the Pats Head Coach makes in Indiana. That must be amazing. You’re not investing in the team, you’re getting rights to sit down in a stadium a dozen times a season. Bob Kraft might have a right to complain about Belichick; you don’t. You might be allowed to complain if your seat is sticky or something, but that’s it.

Finally. “Punt the ball like a normal fucking football team.” Normal teams don’t get to 4 Superbowls in a decade. Normal teams don’t win 3 Superbowls in a decade. When you’ve got more Superbowl rings for coaching than Bill Belichick, then I’ll say you know better than he does. Otherwise, save your whinging for whatever blog you’re pimping off in your signature. I certainly won’t be reading it – crying about your ticket prices for home games when the Pats lose away is rather insipid.

I hope we get them back in the playoffs

at least we know how potent the office can be right now and the defense can stop good offenses for most of the game. And if it wasn’t for that one dumb ass decision we might have pulled away with a win.

From an outsider

I view that decision as quite arrogant by Belicheck. Like he was trying to make a statement or something. That lessens my respect for BB as a division rival.

He wanted to keep the ball out of Manning's hands

I can’t really blame him for the sentiment. It’s the only way to win in the last 2 minutes – keep the ball out of Manning’s hands. Hell, that was literally the gameplan as suggested by the pre-game blog.

i don;t think it was arrogant

he just over thought it…2 mins for peyton manning is always bad no matter where u are on the field. and with the offense the pats have u’d think they coulda gotten it. But wasting 2 timeouts was dumb

I don't think it was a statement

I think he weighed up Peyton Manning against our defense, and the likelihood that they couldnt get two yards in two plays.

the call wasn't bad, that's bullshit

the playcall was bad.

If you’re going to go for it you should know on 3rd down, and then run up the gut to make the possible 4th more manageable.

Belichick's decision was a very bad one, BUT...

even if he decided to punt the ball, the game would still be put in Peyton’s hands, which these days is the football equivalent to Russian Roulette. So, IMO, it was a no-win situation.

At least we have exposed some of the Colts’ big weaknesses, which we can build on should we meet them again in the playoffs.

the diff between peyton 30 yrds and 70 yrds is just how long he's gonna throw it

other wise the odds of him getting a td is only slightly lowered at 70 yrds

by lololol on Nov 16, 2009 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Even that's debatable

Because he starts off with a long field to lob bombs into anywhere. When he’s on a short field, at least the secondary is compressed and he has to find gaps rather than open field to throw in.

Manning would have to take risks from 70 out with no timeout

as it is they took almost no risk and ran the footy in

He has also lost a few games with last min intercepts, at least we know he will be throwing, it would have counted for a little

4 and 2 30 out was a low % play which backfired

Maybe the evil one have 10k on the Colts

by a hay on Nov 16, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

yeah its harder to score from 30 yrds out cuz zone coverage is tighter

while from 70 yrds out they can beat u long or thru the middle. i was more pissed off at letting addai get that large run. if we stuffed him it would have forced mannign to throw from and extra 13 yrds out

I still didn't see the measurement but he did have the first down just look where his forward progress was.

I appreciate the refs giving the Colts the victory because Peyton Manning is a poosey. If you can’t steal at home them you can;t get home field advantage.

I am fricken pissed on this one. I still would have punted, because I don’t think the refs would have called another 30 yard pass interference call to help them go the distance.

The refs would have had to make several fixes if the patriots had punted.

In this case all they had to do was steal the last play. I hope Zapruder had the video on the first down since NBC didn’t. I will probably see Obama’s birth certificate before I see where they spotted the ball and the measurement.

I like you guys going for it on 4th down

I don’t have the stats to back it up and they’re not always relevant anyway, but I like the Pats chances of converting a 4th and 3 more than I like the pats chances of stopping Peyton Manning really late in the game with a gassed defense.

by hibachi on Nov 16, 2009 12:10 AM EST reply actions

Positive outlook

I think overall we played a great game, but we showed a lack of depth at DL (Joseph addai should not be able to pound the ball like that in the 4th) and we need to keep players fresh when playing quick teams like the Colts down the stretch (Saints in a couple weeks).

I don’t like to think of the decision as arrogant. If anything, Belichick was probably thinking hey, whether 30 or 70 yards, if we don’t get this first down, we don’t get it. I don’t think that is “not trusting the defense”, I think as it was pointed out earlier, a no-win situation so going for it might be fun in Madden ‘10, and it might not have been the best decision percentage-wise, but I don’t think it was a dumb decision. My big problem with it was wasting both timeouts (they didn’t have to take the first one after the kickoff).

I dunno where this leaves us; what I’m most disappointed with is we would be one game behind in the lead for the conference if we had won and now we are 3 games back, plus we are behind the Bengals and tied with a still tough Broncos and growing Chargers threat come playoff time.

The Jets is a must win. What I’m grateful for is we still have a 2 game lead. In the end, and the coaching staff has stressed it, it’s about the division.

Booth review

I was actually hoping, since the play ended on the two minute warning, that they would give this play a chance to be reviewed, but like I said earlier, not having a time out to challenge the ruling was absolutely the biggest error on Belichick’s part.

yeah looking back at the game...

its really all on belicheck… or mostly… not having any timeouts.. going for it.. if we punted it, peyton would have to go 80 yards for a touchdown in 2 minutes which is less probable then 30 yards… plus when addai ran from the 15 to the 1 i thought we should have let him get a touchdown cause we would have had 1minutes and 15 seconds to get a field goal to win the game..

by matthewmafa on Nov 16, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

agreed about letting them score...

When the Pats defense stopped the Colts at the 1 yard line, it felt like a kick in the chest. They should have let the Colts score; 1 minute and 15 secs would have been enough for our Pats offense to score at least a field goal if not an actual TD.

Of course, one could argue that, had Maroney not fumbled, we’d have been up by another TD.

Kudos to Brady, Moss and our dynamo Welker (especially running the ball back to 1st and goal after Maroney’s fumble). That was good football.

There are too many, “if’s” with this game but they did a lot of things right. All-in-all a very good game – good win by the Colts; I hate to see my Patriots lose, but losing by a point and doing a lot of things right should give us hope going forward (like someone else said: thankfully, this wasn’t a playoff game!)

only a booth review

If the play begins at or after the two minute warning. This came up in another game a week or two ago that I was watching, play got off before the warning, clock went past two minutes then was stopped (at the end of the play) so it was 1:58 or something, and the coach had to challenge rather than a booth review

I agree at first

I would love to take a look at the very last replay they did on the broadcast, but what’s done is done, they left no room to review.

"I call this here Clark Kent. Just sniff this, right here. It’s good, huh?! You smoke this s**t and you just wanna rip your clothes off in a phone booth and fight crime"

by TheKCB on Nov 16, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

I think you're correct on this, MPF

The best I could discern: Faulk caught the ball beyond the first down marker, had a slight bobble, which was enough to cancel forward progress. Once he landed, however, he was no longer beyond the marker. IIRC, there was even a foot that tapped on the line or some such thing, but because the ball wasn’t fully secured, he was marked down when he landed on his back.

Absolutely

Truthfully, maroney’s fumble was really the devastating play.

FWIW, it looked like he had it from my view in Southern California.

My take: the ball got to him when it was 1 length beyond the marker. Faulk juggled briefly and collected it right over the marker, and his momentum was taking him straight down onto his back. The impact of the tackle pushed him back across the marker and when he hit the ground the ball was one length behind the marker. He slid a little, stopped, and the ball was spotted two lengths behind the marker. If I were the replay official, that would have been how I called it using the angles provided.

All that said, unless this is another 11-5 season and the Pats miss the playoffs ‘by that much’, this loss won’t mean anything except to focus on better decision-making and ball handling in the red zone going forward, which ain’t a bad thing. I like the going for it. I don’t like the play called.

Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.

Phins might have even given you a run for your money if there was only 3 quarters. But alas, there is 4. Colts, Saints, and Pats can attest to that.

yes and no

going for 4 and 3 showed confidence in the offense but unsure of the def. the fact that he didn;t make it def brings up some questions

by lololol on Nov 16, 2009 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

agreed...

yes and no. “Yes”, in the Monday-morning reevaluation sense; “no” in that BB is really tough on everybody, his face on the sidelines when he’s holding his face goes to show that he took a gamble – it just didn’t work; it usually would. So, he’s going to be hard on himself about it and they will do what they did so well in 2007, i.e. course correct. The players will get stronger and more confident. To be honest, did anyone realize that Manning was doing almost nothing other than 2 minute drills in the 4th? How porous was our D in the 4th, if they can do that? How can you then complain that BB didn’t have too much faith in the D? This is not to say that they were bad; just that in the 4th they were unable to contain Manning like they did in the 3rd.

To be honest, I’m not a BB-does-everything-right fan; but honestly, it was a gamble and it backfired. The wasting of 2 timeouts was really gut-wrenching. It was reminiscent of Andy Reid’s consistent poor clock management (sorry Eagle’s fans but I live in Philly (even wanted the Birds to beat the Cowboys… (sorry Cowboys fans)) – so you know of what I speak).

by Boston1 on Nov 16, 2009 7:50 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not even sure it's lack of confidence in the defence...

as it is confidence in Peyton Manning to drive whatever distance in two minutes. Manning’s done it so often, against any and all defences, that it really comes down to “Manning will score irrespective, we just need to get two yards to prevent him from having the opportunity.”

Great game

As a Colts fan I know that many of you are probably feeling extremely down about this.

While watching the game I was sick throughout most of it, the Colts were not executing well and the Pats were, by and large, executing brilliantly. I felt we had been outplayed in every facet and that only the turnovers were keeping us in it.

For what it’s worth, no team scared me as much as the Pats coming into this game, and right now I would rather play any other team than the Pats in the playoffs.

Congratulations on a well played game – I hope not to see you guys in the playoffs, but I feel that it’s probably going to come down to Colts-Pats again.

Good luck with the rest of your games.

Shouldn't have even come to that!

If Baloney doesn’t fumble- the game is won. Why come back with him on the last 2 drives? The time out after the kick off was wasted, and yes, he should have punted no matter who was the opposing QB. 6 points up and going for it on 4th down while at your 20 or whatever it was with any time left is just plain retarded. Bellichick just outcoached himself there!! I am soooo disappointed. That and the fact that my fantasy opponent had Wayne and I was up until that last TD just really depresses me- now where the hell is my Prozac!!! UUGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Those of you who think you know everything just annoy those of us who do!!

by Sully F on Nov 16, 2009 12:23 AM EST reply actions

Guess we'll just have to take it all out on the Saints?

Few things…

1) We eliminated Dallas Clark. We did a good job, it’s just that our secondary is too young to handle Reggie Wayne. I was confused, though. Why did Pees have Leigh Bodden on Garcon instead of on Reggie Wayne? We put our younger guys on him and he caught EVERYTHING that was thrown to him. Poor job with that. We did a good job of limiting, but the Colts receivers were too good and Peyton was too accurate. They managed to get all the incredible and improbable catches and to win the game.

2) We missed Ty Warren/TBC/etc etc. We had limited pressure after a strong start. This has gone on too far. We NEED to address this in next years draft. I will question BB’s coaching if he doesn’t push for a stud pass rusher in the draft.

3) Brady IS back. He had a huge game. He is back and I have full trust in his abilities. The rust is now gone.

4) We CAN and WILL beat the Saints. If we can’t end one team’s undefeated season, we’ll do it to another team’s.

5) We need SaMo and Fragile Freddy back. Faulk was a tank today, but we need a consistent back who can gain yardage. As great as our RB by committee is, I’d much prefer a tandem of 2 studs than 4 mediocre players. I mean, when we were in the 5 yard line of the end zone, I never felt confident that we’d have a TD. If we had Stephen Jackson? MJD? AD? CJ? This game wouldn’t be close. We need to get a stud in the draft as well. Not a LoMo, but a player who was a feature back in college.

6) Faulk had that first down. I will swear by that. We just didn’t have a TO or that would’ve been over turned. BB lost us the game, plain and simple. We can place the blame on LoMo’s fumble, or Brady throwing the pick, and those were important. But we had a chance to win the game if we had punted the ball and stopped them. Sure, it’s Manning, but apart from their final drive, we had been able to limit him. It was aggressive and had it been called correctly, we would have won. However, it wasn’t and that’s football. I’ll lay this on Hoodie’s shoulders.

7) We’ll see the Colts again in the Playoffs. I guarantee it.

8) Vollmer is INCREDIBLE. Kazcur, not so much. I’ll stick to what I’ve been saying. Vollmer in at LT, Light in at RT. I might not even slide Kazcur to RG, I might leave Neal there. Have Kazcur come in and play the LeVoir role and play the 6th blocker. He was eaten ALIVE by Mathis in the 4th quarter. Vollmer handled Freeney in single most of the time (Mankins saved him a couple times). Why didn’t we start putting extra help by Mathis?

9) 60 minutes. Games last 60 minutes. This one hurts because we had it in their house, but we’ll have another chance in the playoffs.

10) I needed 10 points. (So did the Pats? rim shot) We have a great team and they’re young. They’ll keep getting better. We just need a couple more pieces until we’re back on top. This year is still ours. We can win and we KNOW we can win. We just need to execute. We’re going to win out. Calling it.

several teams had them on the ropes and let them wiggle off the hook. dolphins had them beat, texans, jags and now the pats. eventually that kind of luck usually runs out at the wrong time. they have alot of early exits from the playoffs to show for it.

good game pats

in your coach defense i have to say this in the 4th quater the colts offense was hot , 125+ yards 21 points , your D was tired and the no huddle was taking its tall on your big D, it is the righht thing to play the % and make our offense earn the win from 70 yards , but 2 yards for an offense like yours that was raking 10+ yards per play, well i still think our offense with no huddle on your tired D would score anyway but your coach tried to win it. great game and thank you for a great week of blogging

Missed Opportunity?

Does anyone else think the Pats were sunk as soon as Brady threw incomplete right before they kicked the field goal with 4:12 left? Sure, if they make a first down there games most likely over. But I recall thinking at the time man they need to keep the clock moving.

Say they ran it instead of the incomplete pass attempt. That would have meant another 40 something secs off the clock at least. Or maybe the Colts burn a timeout.

Who knows what would have happened? So maybe the Colts don’t score before the 2 min warning. Do you think Belichick still goes for it if the Colts have under 2 mins left and no timeouts or does he kick it deep and take his chances?

Man that game sucked. Bad enough they lost, but I have to have flashbacks to the AFC title game too?

agreed...

@matthewmafa: “everyone acts like peyton manning going 80 yard in 2 minutes is a 100% chance… now lets not overrate the guy..”

I agree and certainly do think Manning is overrated and when 12 (and someone split their vote for Manning AND Brady) out of the 20 living hall of fame QBs says that its Manning and NOT Brady who should be considered the best I feel that they must be sipping the kool-aid.

However, while its not a 100% chance; the probability that Manning will run the no-huddle and be successful is fairly high. After all, he did score twice in the 4th in under 2 mins (granted one was from 30 yards away).

by Boston1 on Nov 16, 2009 8:04 AM EST up reply actions

Belichick obviously thought that there was a greater chance

of the Brady-led Pats offence getting two yards, than there was of a defence stopping a two-minute drill by Peyton Manning. The conversion rate of a fourth-down attempt like that is around 70-80%; Belichick must have thought Manning had around an 80%+ chance of successfully managing a 2-minute drill down the field. Given his performance in the fourth quarter, I’d tend to agree with Hoodie – the fourth quarter was Robo-Manning in all his glory.
