Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

"He’s got a lot of heart," coach Bill Belichick said. "He’s a heck of a football player. He shows up every day to work. I know he’s been banged up, but he fights through it, returns punts, catches the ball, blocks. He goes into the corner after the puck, too. He’s not just scoring goals; he’s going in there and digging it out in the corner.

"He’s a tough football player. He reminds me a lot of another slot receiver [Troy Brown] that we had here for a longtime, kind of the same way."

What the he is up with Randy? Doesn't he know even if he feels the Pats don't have a shot he is ruining his chances of becoming a HOFer?

It really bothers me the way he has been playing. I have loved Moss since he first came into the league. He is starting to prove to me that his heart isn’t in it anymore. If we are going to compete in the playoffs his attitude must change. I hope BB expresses this to him. The team needs him. He has to understand that he isn’t going to catch the ball 15 times a game and score 4td’s every game. He opens things up for the offense and I guess that doesn’t make him happy. Brady might throw a bad ball and he doesn’t even try to play defender? He is a disappointment and I hope someone sends him some sort of message that gets his arse in gear!

I don't think it is heart at all.

I think Randy is injured – probably his back – and he is still playing. His hasn’t been as physical as he has been, but I think he is as physical as he can be for now. The missed passes were be cause he took his eyes off of the ball as the defender came in (self-preservation). He might not be up to being super-Randy right now, it’s unfortunate, but it’s OK. He still moves two defenders with him on every play. That’s pressure that’s not going elsewhere. He also still has the ability to make a big play. It just can’t be every play. Randy is a Hall of Famer despite the way he is playing now. The easy thing would be to sit a game out. That would give him time to heal. We need him (and the attention he gets) on the field, and he’s playing. Give him a pass like his teammates are doing (they’re the ones he’s battling with). He deserves it.

hmmm

I would not be surprised to find out Randy had the flu, or was laying on his back in pain before the game began. I think the sending home had a serious effect on Moss. I think he feels like he let the team down and he is trying to work through that feeling.

Even if he didn’t have a great game, they STILL doubled teamed him all day and allowed the running game and welker to have their way in the second half, becuase 2 defenders were tied up on him. If they really felt that Randy would “dog” it in the second half, why did they continue to double team?

Randy's still capable of those long completions and TDs if you think back only a few weeks.

And bear in mind that not everyone is. So even if he’s not 100%, he’s doing at least a significant part of his job – stretching the field, giving Welker room, etc. Even if he’s not getting yardage himself, he’s giving Welker an opportunity for 10 catch, 100 yard games.

I don’t think it’s lack of heart – he’s blocking and doing all the little things that suggest his heart’s in the game. I wonder if his age and his sore back are affecting him worse than he’s letting on – he’s hardly got enough WR depth to allow him to be spelled, so he’s sticking it out. That suggests more heart and courage and team spirit than less, at least to me.

It also seems the OC calls some stupid plays for Moss. Shhhh. Secret game plan follows....

1st down: Ok Randy, 40 yard sprint as a decoy, block the Free safety.
2nd down: Ok Randy, 40 yard sprint for real with an empty backfield that says, "Pass play."
3rd down: Ok Randy, 40 yard sprint as a decoy, so we can get 3 yards with Welker or Faulk.

2nd down: Ok Randy, you get a 30 second Gatorade break, because we’re showing run.

Wow, Randy did nothing on that drive (except nine 40 yard wind sprints). The guy has no heart.

Did I say he has no heart? I hope you are not quoting me because I said it was like his heart wasn't in it.

I an from Michigan and have watched Randy on the Vikings twice a year for many years. For you to totally put the lack of effort put forth by Randy on doing wind sprints is being a little optimistic IMO. You can read it in his body language. Like I said I am a huge fan of THE FREAK and I am just hoping to see a WR who wants a ring and not a WR like Hines Ward or TO. Many WR’s (besides Wes) in the NFL are very egotistic and are me me me. I know Randy has matured alot in the last few years, but come on man don’t treat me like I don’t know football…

Yea I know right. This state is in need of major help. Hey I don't critisize your gross BoSox s be nice. We are all PATS FANS and that is all that should matter right.

SMP I have mad respect for you and I agree about Randy’s health might be an issue. I just remember Moss not finishing when the ball was going his way.

I think we've been spoiled by watching Welker

Who’s just an endless ball of energy, all the time, doesn’t seem to ever be rattled by any hit, never seems to tire, and is always doing something busy.

Randy doesn’t take plays off or shortchange his throws any more than any other #1 receiver. And also remember that his role is different – if he senses that the play isn’t on (say he’s running into an obvious trap set by a ball-hawking Free Safety like Ed Reed), letting off the gas is actually a good thing – it signals to Brady that the play isn’t on, and tells him to look underneath. Welker, by contrast, has the job of always getting open when necessary on every play, because he’s the second read.

It’s just the difference between being a primary-read, big-play #1 receiver and being a true slot receiver.

Great point, and Rec'd

Better than telling Brady, I’m sort of open force it in here with these three guys (read Favre and Cutler). There are always those big plays where you say “Randy, you gotta make it happen.” There weren’t any of those in the Carolina game (usually, behind in points and low on time and downs). There rest of the time, it’s smart football. If that means Randy’s job is to got tire out some DBs for awhile, then that’s what he’ll do.

I think there is more to it than he doesn't want to put in the effort.

I’m a 45 year old Black Belt. Someday’s people swear I couldn’t be over 30. Some days I feel closer to 60. Injuries don’t heal as fast when you get older. If his issue is spinal alignment, it’s going to nag at him. Running could be a chore, getting hit could be major pain. He’s needed and he’s there anyway. I think he’s frustrated, but it is about whatever limitations he has. Been there, done that.

Mhmm

I played about 90% of a full rugby season with a shoulder that was seemingly perpetually dislocated or just about to be dislocated. It got the point I could pop it in and out at will (awesome party trick, by the way). I could tape it up, glue it down, string it up, whatever before a game… no effect. I’d play ten minutes, get a hit, and it’d pop out and I’d lose feeling in my fingers. Good times. The alternative would’ve been to stop playing until it was healed (yeah, right).

Point being, there was nothing as frustrating as being fit, ready to play, mentally engaged, and then only putting out 80%-90% of production because of an injury you can’t really do a lot about. If Randy’s back injury is slowing him up a little, but isn’t really getting better or worse (which I suspect is fairly accurate) then it’s not surprising at all that he’s frustrated. It’s more annoying than a game-ending injury, because then he’d be resigned to being injured and shrug it off. At the moment he’s trying his hardest and his body is failing him that little bit, which is far worse.

For me it is an old lower back injury

that most of the time is fine (jumping, spinning and kicking people in the head all good), but when it acts up it is painful to do White Belt level kicks. One minute you’re Jackie Chan, the next you’re Charlie Chan. Pretty humbling and frustrating.

Has any player been as critiqued as Randy Moss?

He’s like a bug under the media microscope. Maybe he and Donovan McNabb can start a support group or something, but man the guy gets no love at all.

My guess is that he’s playing through pain right now. Yeah, it’s a guess, but I’ll continue to give him the benefit of the doubt instead of the haters. The haters don’t know any more about what’s going on than I do.

Keep the faith!

Haha, a support group of McNabb, TO and Moss

There’s so many rivalries and bitterness between those three that it’d basically be Fight Club-type therapy.

You do not speak about NFL Support Club. You DO NOT speak about NFL Support Club.

He's like Belichick in that he's the anti-diva, avoiding the media at all costs

The downside is that the media doesn’t need him to speak for a good story and can get back at him quite nicely by continuing their storylines without any quotes. Media darling T.O. learned his lesson a bit late, on the insatiable appetite of the 24-7-365 sports reporting beast.

One article this morning said something like Randy Moss could quiet his critics by returning to his all-pro form. That’s a load of bull-hockey. There’s no way on this green earth the critics would be satisfied with anything short of 5 TDs per game and seeing Moss in a cheerleader uniform on the sidelines. Even then, they’d use that performance to justify their earlier criticisms. Bah!

Keep the faith!
