Steal this Thread - Week 15 - Rocky Edition.

Yet another thread to be stolen.

From MaPatsFan: I don't mind thread stealing as it gives people a chance to get a little "goofy".  However, I DO like the idea of a separate thread.

This thread (named in dubious honor [or honour for Comedic.Sans] of a book titled Steal This Book) is a thread that was designed to be stolen.  Random thoughts, check.  Inane observations, perfectly fine.  Multiple segues, the more the merrier.  Goofy pictures, haiku, whatever.  If the thread gets unwieldy, I'll create a new sandbox for us to play in.  Feel free to jump in, the water's fine.

A couple restrictions, however.  To keep this from becoming a war, we need to steer clear of politics, and religion.

On that note, I'm going to diverge from my usual silliness for a moment.

Star-divide

Good things come in small packages.  Specifically, the 68" of Kevin Faulk and the 69" (though Tom Brady always says 67") of Wes Welker.  Short of stature, big on heart.  What's not to love?  Welker taking long hand-offs, Faulk taking shorter ones.  Hit them hard, they pop up and keep moving the chains.  Some people call them play makers, but the simpler term is football players (in the dictionary under Brown, Troy).  Make the play, huddle up and do it again.  They yell, "C'mon defense give us the ball back, because we want to play", only because Belichick keeps them off the defense (but not the special teams).  Sometimes the biggest players on the field are the ones with the shortest shadows.

Stretching the tape a little, you could add Laurence Maroney at 71" who has shown up big in the last few games.  There was the nine yarder where he made it to the edge and accelerated up the line.  That's just talent.  The one where he went up the middle, twisted, turned and pushed for 9, that's heart.  The play that says ALA Walter Payton (70"), "Don't die easy."  Oh and that fumble thing?  Not last game.  People were swiping away at him (that happens when you get the reputation), but he held on and pushed.  Much of the third and short was on him.

When you've got guys that are leaving it all on the field, their teammates and the opposition notices.  Game changers.  Try to hit Welker hard so the Patriots don't gain momentum.  He stands back up, pumps his fist and electrifies the place.  Momentum is now in the Pats favor.  Who wants the first down marker more Faulk or the defense?  They both drop their shoulders and it turns out Faulk wanted it more.  People step up.  Hit Watson as he catches the ball in the endzone, and he hangs on.  How could he face Welker or Faulk if he hadn't?

Moss is struggling a bit, but I don't think it is attitude.  I think he is playing through some pain.  You don't spring back as fast when you're older (I can attest to that), and he's a little afraid of getting injured (taking his eye off the ball as the defenders approach).  It affects your focus a bit.  Welker's the bulldog, and Moss is the greyhound.  One is built for fighting and the other is built for speed.  What makes me so sure Moss still cares?  I saw Moss tucking Welker's pads back in and congratulate him after one of his scramble and hits.  It wasn't an "I'm dogging it" Moss, it was more of a "let me get that for you, wish I could do more" Moss.  Maybe Randy plays decoy for awhile, and pulls guys away from the playmakers.  Whatever it takes.  Moss on the field means he's trying, though, as opposed to those who have given up.

Buffalo is up next, and a chance to cure our road woes.  It doesn't matter if it's the ugliest win ever or a statement game blowout, we need that win.  We'll need our playmakers to get it.

With that I leave you this:

 Rockybalboamgm_medium

Julian called Welker "Rocky" after the last game.  Does that leave Welker yelling, "Edelman!"?

Anyway, it's a fight from here on out.

Yet another bass hero

I must give SMP money or maybe a Dunkin Donuts gift card. By providing a “Steal this Thread”, the shackles are removed and I can write about something other than football!!

Jaco Pastorius is another of my favorite bassists. Made famous by his stint with a Jazz Fusion powerhouse called Weather Report, Jaco suffered from substance abuse and bipolar disorder. At the age of 35, he died after a brutal beating by a club bouncer.

One of my favorite Jaco compositions is “Teen Town”. Another of my bass heroes, Marcus Miller, did a “slap” version of that song that is pretty darn cool. Enjoy.

Ahh, horn players

I’m less familiar with that side of Jazz, but I would recommend Dave Brubeck or the Brecker Brothers. Of course, one of the greatest Jazz fusion albums of all time was Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew”. Aside from Miles, the folks on that album read like a who’s who of greats.

NZ Dairy is annhilating British stuff so badly...

that the UK dairy board created an ad campaign to beg UK consumers to be more patriotic when purchasing cheese. The ad campaign is fronted by Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols… yeaaaah. Him.

The registration info (and therefore insurance) only had the 1.1L info. Since you pay insurance based on engine size, my insurance was cheaper.

I learned to drive stick shift in this car (left hand since the wheel is on the right).

My Mom hated stick, so my Dad only had automatics around the house.

When I came back to the states for a visit, I borrowed my sister’s car (also a stick). I had to keep my right hand on the stick or else I would smash my left hand into the driver’s door trying to shift left handed.

I took my family over to England a couple years ago (the rental was an automatic – my wife thought she might want to drive over there, but later changed her mind). The gal at the airport was shocked that I was going to drive into London from Gatwick. It was no big deal for me, since the last time I had driven in London was in a deuce and a half and the rental was a darn sight smaller. You’ve just got to get used to two lanes of traffic merging through one lane (people parking on both sides constrict the two lanes into two half lanes). My wife started screaming that we were going to get hit, but I assured her that if she closed her eyes she would feel better. By the end of the trip, she could keep her eyes open and feel reasonably at peace. Good times.

Merge like a zip...

or drive a tank. Either/or

Driving on the left is traditional (and I mean traditional – dating back to horses). You rode your horse on the left side of the road so you could hit oncoming traffic with your sword on the right. True story.

Whatever gets you through the night, buddy.

Not so many swords in colonial America.

I’ve also heard about the how the spiral staircases in castles were set up so the right handed defenders could get a full swing, but the right handed attackers had there arms against the walls. Could be true.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Dec 17, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

It was true

and it also is partly why ‘sinister’ originally came from the Old French word, ‘sinistre’ meaning ‘of the left side’ – left-handed. Leftie swordsmen ruined your day, especially when trying to defend castles, so the connection between sinistre and sinister came about (apparently).

Although, they were French. They’d probably surrender when just seeing a left-handed guy, irrespective of his abilities. Or whether he’s even carrying a sword…

It’s always amusing to remember that the two greatest French war heroes are a 19 year old peasant girl and a Corsican, and both eventually failed to do what they accomplished.
