Around SBN: The Animated GIFs Of January

Dan Connolly -- Starts at right guard in place of Stephen Neal and is an important part of the team's 185-yard rushing effort, which includes some big inside runs.

Kevin Faulk -- Running back gets it going on the ground, with 58 yards on 10 carries, effectively running draw plays while also running behind a lead-blocking fullback at times.

Jarvis Green -- Veteran defensive end sees his playing time spike, as he hardly leaves the field and totals four tackles and a sack.

Logan Mankins -- Mainstay on the line starts at left guard and is an important part of the team's 185-yard rushing effort, which includes some big inside runs.

Wes Welker -- Receiver finishes with 10 catches for 105 yards and helps bring life to the Gillette Stadium crowd in the third quarter after taking a big hit and popping back up.

Not sure

But I’m not sure I’d want to keep Neal. He’s getting old, he’s injury-prone, he’s not exactly dominating when he is healthy, and they’ve already signed Kazcur so they’re stuck with him. It might play out that Kazcur slots in one position and Vollmer gets the RT gig.

hmm...

I really don’t know why you have so much angst against Neal… I think he has done a great job at guard when he has played. He does get injured a bunch, which is a concern, but he is more than servicable, especially with a good guard. There have been a number of Boston writers out there that were surprised he wasn’t on the guard list for the Pro bowl (not winning, but should be on the list)

I will admit I am kind of biased toward Neal being a former college wrestler myself, but I think he might not be elite, but he is solid

Not angst against the guy, just a tad of Hoodie cold-bloodedness in roster moves

I just thought there were a number of reasons that Neal could be expendable:
1) Neals has been injury-prone in the last few seasons;
2) Neal is one of the oldest on the O-line at a time that Hoodie is obviously making a concerted effort to make the O-line younger (three rookie O-linemen selected in the 2009 draft);
3) Neal’s contract is up;
4) The Pats already re-signed Kazcur for a multi-year, starting tackle money deal;
5) Vollmer is a better RT than Kazcur, so Kazcur would be an expensive bench-warmer;
6) Kazcur apparently has experience playing at guard, so could slide in one spot.

All of this leads me to believe that Neal’s the odd man out – he’s on the downslide of his career, he’s injury prone and he has a replacement young buck who has a long-term contract on starting tackle pay-rates. Neal might have forced himself back into the lineup with amazing play or whatever, but he’s been ‘merely’ solid. In other words, he’s replaceable.

It might be cold-blooded, but if Hoodie can let Troy Brown and Willie McGinest slide into free agency or trade away Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour away, he can certainly let an aging and injured Steven Neal go, too.

all valid points...

I go back to my statement below… I wish we hadn’t resigned Kazcur. I understand WHY we did it with the impending contracts expiring. It was a good move on hoodie’s part to look ahead, but I would rather have paid Mankins a year early.

by Ogor on Dec 16, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I never figured that out either

especially since for a week or two prior, all the talk had been about Vince’s contract, and how there wasn’t enough money to pay the man. Then out of the blue, Kazcur gets an extension… slightly strange.

I think we signed Kaczur...

…because we knew he could move over to RG when he wasn’t producing. He has that versatility to do that, unlike Neal. We hoped to find a future tackle in the draft and Vollmer emerged earlier than expected.

Perhaps

but I’d also have thought Hoodie would want to see how the rookies panned out – he drafted a stud in Vollmer, a tackle/guard in George Bussey, a guard/center in Rich Ohrnberger, and also had young center/guard Ryan Wendell on the practice squad to look at as well. That’s a fair bit of depth that could’ve been evaluated, irrespective of whether they thought Kazcur would play tackle or guard longterm.

Even if Taylor's back, I doubt he'd steal many carries from LoMo

at least not in the first week back. I’d imagine they’d give him a series or two to get him back into the lineup and feeling back at home, and then yank him – he won’t be match-fit yet, and he probably won’t produce because of it. This is still a must-win game, so that alone would keep Maroney on the field considering his hot streak and growing confidence.

Faulk might've got at least part of it for leadership

It sounds like he blew up at the guys at halftime and finally got a decent second half performance out of the team. Someone had to do it, and it sounds like it was Faulk.

yes

whre’s ma man?i would’ve included him with faulk. after all, maroney has been their second best offensive weapon(or at least the most consistent) for the past 3 weeks, and he gave his best performance today(2nd behind welker of course).

Anyone know if there's an online site for the whole game?

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead
