Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hey Patriots fans

My Jaguars travel up to most likely snowy Foxborough this Sunday to take on the Patriots. This is a game we both need to keep our playoff hopes alive, so we should be in for a good one. The Jags are still looking for their first ever win in Foxborough, as well as aight Tom Brady.

If you guys don't mind, I'll just answer a few FAQs now

1. Tim Tebow

2. LA/London/whatever Jags

We aren't going to LA. We managed to sell out the Colts game and season ticket sales are back on the upswing for next year. It'll take a little bit, but the fans are returning to this team. That being said, I'm sure we'll be going to be the "home" team for the London game next year. I fact, I wrote this almost two months before PFT decided to rip me off.

The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

How's David Garrard playing of late?

What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of your team?

As Garrard goes, so does the offense

Garrard is Mr.Inconsistent, one week looking like he belongs in the chat for “Elite” Qbs and then the next week showing why he could never wrestle the starting spot away from Leftwich for so long.

When he’s on, I think he plays like one of the Top 5-6 QBs in the NFL. When he’s not, well, things don’t go well.

i was wondering last game garrad looked on it vs the colts

until the last drive where he missed several open guys and the int. What happened there?

by lololol on Dec 22, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

One

was a miscommunication. The pick was a result of being stepped on by his center, who was bull rushed back in to Garrard.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

1. Garrard is good, he just had no receivers or an O-Line...

…so you don’t even have a need for Tebow.

Anyways…

In my latest statistical rankings, I have the Jaguars at 23, despite their 7-7 record and that other people have you at the middle of the road. Apart from your wins against the Texans and the winless Titans, none of your wins have come from greater than 3 points. I know a win is a win, but those 3 point wins have come against teams like the Rams and Chiefs. You also have a 41-0 blowout at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks (who I have ranked lower than you guys).

On the other hand, you guys played the Colts just as well as we did, taking them to the wire. Same with the Dolphins.

What is the main cause for your erratic performances? As Pats fans, we can expect a really good first half and then we have to hope that the defense holds up because we’re getting a MAXIMUM of 1 touchdown after the half. That’s a fact.

What causes the Jags to vary so much week to week?

Everyone knows Maurice Jones-Drew and people have started to hear of Mike Sims-Walker. Would you guys be interested in taking BenJarvus Green-Ellis from us? How about Tully Banta-Cain? If your QB changed his name to David Garrard-Smith, would he become a Pro Bowler?

Hire OC.

This is a very young team

We have 5 rookies (including an UDFA) in the starting lineup. MSW is really in his first year in the NFL after being injured his first two years. Mike Thomas, another rookie, is our slot receiver. To be honest, most Jags fans would never have thought this team would get too 7 wins, let alone be in the playoff hunt.

However, the erratic play of David Garrard has a lot to do with it as well.

Don't trade away Tully Banta-Cain!

I like Tully. Plus he doesn’t prosper in a system other than the Pats – he’s bright, but not super-fast, -physical or -strong.

Time and change will surely (truly) show,

Luckily

for you guys, we don’t even have marshmallows to rush Brady.

I agree

Garrard is a huge part as to whether or not we win or lose, and why we are so erratic. But I think a bigger part is glaring weaknesses. If we can your passing game from getting into a rhythm, we have a good chance of winning. However, if we get caught by a QB on his good day, like Warner earlier in the year or Manning last Thursday we simply don’t have the pass rush to disrupt him. And once a team gets a lead on us, we are hard pressed to become a pass first team/pass only team. Don’t have the mentality/personnel to be a pass first team all the time.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2009 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

In other words

we are erratic because we are very vulnerable to certain match ups.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2009 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

I did it

and I’m ready to answer any Jags related questions as well! (as well as some other guys from BCC).

What's the playoff possibilities for you guys?

I assume you have to win out, and then you probably need a loss from someone else?

Win both games

and we need either a loss from Denver (At Phily this week…) or Baltimore (at Heinz field…)

The Jags has the best AFC record among the 7-7 teams. So If we winout we are 90% IN!

The problem is we never won in against The Patriots.

I wish the Jags could rematch the Dolphins game-that loss will eliminate us…

Depending on who loses

We might play NE in the playoffs, again.

Depending on

which teams lose, we could end up being a 5th or 6th seed; assuming we win out.

Is David Garrard as fast out of the pocket as he was a couple years ago?

by SlotMachinePlayer on Dec 23, 2009 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Yes and no

I wouldn’t say that he lost too much speed, but he’s much more of a pocket passer now than he was then. He still runs, but it’s usually up the middle of the defense rather than a traditional rollout scramble. He was never ridiculously fast, just big and strong and breaks tackles.

Still someone you have to account for.

Those can be more dangerous than a run-first QB

Aaron Rodgers has the most running yardage as a QB this year, and I think last year as well, yet he actually gets criticized for staying too long in the pocket – he gets sacked because of it. He’ll sit back, see everyone is covered, and then realises that means nobody is covering him. Cue 20 yard+ scramble.

Well. That’s only if the Packers O-line doesn’t fold like a wet cardboard sheet and get him plastered over a few square feet of turf.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 23, 2009 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

with SoCal. Garrard actually lost weight this off season, probably making him just as nimble as he was in 07. Either way he’s not going to burn anyone, other than some of the bigger run stuffing DT’s. He’s more of a tackle breaker, he also knows how to set up blocks when he tucks it. Probably the second hardest guy to bring down after Big Ben. I wouldn’t doubt that Garrard is the strongest though. He also has one of the strongest arms in the league; something a lot of people are not aware of.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 24, 2009 1:45 AM EST up reply actions

Well aware of his arm strength.

Something that is of great use behind a strong O-line and with fast receivers.

I wish

Holt was younger. This could be a pretty good offense this time next year, with the development of the rookie WR’s and OT’s.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 24, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

I really don't have any questions other than two things to say

1) When I go to the bar on Sunday to watch this game, it will be a very interesting scene as my twin brother is a big-time Jaguars fan (has been since their beginning).

2) Looking forward to seeing Tiquan Underwood become a part of the starting receiving corps in the near future!

Beer is good! And stuff!

by R_Adragna on Dec 25, 2009 1:53 PM EST reply actions

#1: Very cool, your brother is awesome.
#2: We’ll just have to find out, right now he’s behind alot of other WR’s but maybe when Holt retires he can find a niche as a starter.

He better hope

next year’s WR draft picks are few and far between. I do hope he succeeds though. With Dillard coming back, and maybe even Troy Williamson.

My son is a big-time Jaguars fan

Santa brought him a Rashean Mathis jersey and he wore it all day.

Keep the faith!

Amen

A Mathis Jersey is good, he should be with a team for a good while and he’s good. Wear with pride, my last Jags jersey was Matt Jones…..Can’t wait for the draft and my next jersey.

Hoping for a certain guy with a five-lettered surname?

Or just a general “first-round pick better be good” guy?

Yeah

BCC would explode with a #15 draft on the 1st round….
Luckily Gene Smith not like him before the 3rd round. And he will pick…
