Quick Recap: Dolphins defeat Patriots, 22-21

For the first time in a long time, our New England Patriots lose back-to-back regular season games.  And yet again, we come up short in the second half.  There is no single play that typically loses a game.  In this game, our defense was absolutely horrible against the pass.  But today I will blame a 4th and 6 "go for it" for this loss.  This is absolutely pitiful football against a division rival, a win we absolutely needed to seal up this division.

Yet again, we fail on the road.  Yet again, hubris gets in the way of winning a game.  Miami came up strong in the second half to take this game.  Even without Ronnie Brown and the Wildcat, the Patriots still manage to screw this one up.

Discuss.

Lots of blame to go around...

I think it is becoming abundantly clear that Bill O’Brien is NOT the answer at O cordinator

by bbismyhero on Dec 6, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions

This offense just freezes in the 4th

We can blame the defense all we want but they were mostly clutch in the 4th quarter. The last three possesions of the Pats offense were 3 and out, 3 and out and INT.

by bbismyhero on Dec 6, 2009 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Is it O'Brien or Hoodie making those 4th calls?

Either way, not working. Not the decision to go for it, but how to go for it. And the mix of run-versus-pass is all wrong at critical times – having a failed run and then having to call a timeout versus throwing an incompletion and saving one, or vice versa. Small things that cost games. Ugh.

with his fumblitis, I can see the logic....

But I agree… we took him out and had the same result… turnover when it mattered

by Ogor on Dec 6, 2009 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

What?

Why’d we take Maroney?!

by Tai on Dec 6, 2009 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

We lost because we didn't kick that field goal with 2:00 to go in the 1st half.

You know, when Brady first trotted out there before the 2 min. warning, I said to myself, "Oh, they are just faking it. Only a crack-addict coach would take a risk this early in the game instead of taking the easy 3 points. The 2 min. warning will come and when we come back from commercials Gostkowski will be blasting it through the uprights and we’ll have a nice two-score lead.

BUT NOOOOOOOO! God forbid we think in those terms! We’ve got to worry about BALL CONTROL AND HOW MUCH TIME IS ON THE F-ING CLOCK AND ALL THAT CRAP!!!! What a joke! Head coaches have the final say, so don’t kid yourselves. BB is 100% responsible for us not going into halftime with at best a 10 point lead and at worst a 7 point lead (assuming Miami still drove the field and kicked their field goal). Instead it was 14 – 10 and the ball game was wide freaking open.

This used to be the smartest team in the league in terms of clock management and not taking STUPID risks. Not anymore.

Take the points, Bill! TAKE THE BLOODY POINTS!

horrible defensive play

and that brady end zone int hurt. Fire the offensive coordinator now. the play calling is a joke

by lololol on Dec 6, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions

The defensive line and the offensive play calling...

To me these are the 2 weakest things of our team. The defensive backs are having to play coverage for 10 minutes every pass cause of the lack of a decent pass rush. when we rush more than 4, we almost always give up a big play.

We need to figure out things in the trenches on defense.

My solution: rehire Charlie, get Romeo to come back as an assistant head coach or something and help sort things out on D. There are a lot of “technique” errors I am seeing every down, from missing tackles, to blown assignments.

by Ogor on Dec 6, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions

After 12 games last year...

we were 7-5 with Matt Cassel. After 12 games this year we’re 7-5 with Tom Brady. Now we have to win out to avoid getting into a situation where we have to depend on a tiebreaker to win the division. What a horrible disappointment.

by ProfessorTodd on Dec 6, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions

I really didn't see that coming.

Of course we are rebuilding the defense. Tommy B hasn’t been the clutch QB this year. Lots of forcing things to happen which have led to some big mistakes. Better tackling this game, so that’s good. LOL

by mellyh on Dec 6, 2009 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

This is turning ugly pretty fast…I figured OK, they get beaten by the Colts and Saints, the top 2 teams in the NFL…The worst they’ll finish is 12-4, and still get a 1st round bye and a home game…

NOW, this is looking eerily similar to last season…They might MISS the playoffs AGAIN at 11-5, WITH Tom Brady. He is OBVIOUSLY not back to normal.

…and with the way they’re playing, WINNING OUT is no guarantee…but they better prepare to win out, because after last year, that may be the ONLY way they get in the playoffs…

by Patriot1 on Dec 6, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

and last year we were glad ...

that we are 7-5 with an inexperienced QB. I think we must accept the fact that this Pats team, even with Brady, is not super bowl caliber. We should be glad that we are 7-5 with such a horrible D, an inexperienced O coordinator and an injured fading QB. The fans’ expectation for this team is just too high.

The Pats management nickeled and dimed the players to try to save a few bucks (who could blame them in this economy?) But they got what they paid for. Even if the D coorinator made the right calls, they would not have the right personnel to execute.

by getthat18now on Dec 6, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

where are the Pats?

I just can’t fathom where all the heart went. Is it me or is the fire gone from their bellies? Geesh.

by mellyh on Dec 6, 2009 4:22 PM EST reply actions

the team looks lost an every point of the game

they can;t finish in the second half for their lives

by lololol on Dec 6, 2009 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Indy game was same song, same result

2 turnovers in the red zone in indy game, plus 2 failed red zone tries that left us with 6 instead of 14. Any one of those 4 vs Indy goes the other way, we win that one…

For Miami it looked identical… 2 turnovers in the red zone (1 failed fourth conversion, 1 turnover). We will never win turning it over like that in the red zone, no matter how well we play

by Ogor on Dec 6, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

This was also another multiple INT game from Brady

3 in a row now I think…. The 2009 Pats are starting to feel a lot like the 2009 Red Sox. No identity, awful on the road, not clutch, a bunch of bland professionals and heading towards an early play off exit.

Raiders knocked over the Steelers in a clutch drive.

At least the Pats didn’t get rolled in the last minute by the Raiders.

and i think the steelers have the worst o line ever…last year they gave up 47 sacks

by NinjaZX6R on Dec 6, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

It's a good run-blocking O-line

and Roethlisberger has questionable pocket-presence instincts. He loves to jaunt around the backfield and make throws on the run, which might be fine, but half the time he decides to run in the direction the blitz is coming from. He takes his own O-line out of play and runs into the teeth of pass-rushing OLBs. Quite a few of the sacks he suffers have nothing to do with the lack of a pocket – it’s there and it looks good, but he’s 10 yards outside of it and trying to play tag with an OLB.

These problems come down to the coaching

Well… except the pass rush, thats just bad drafting

by bbismyhero on Dec 6, 2009 4:33 PM EST reply actions

Hoodie's been known to take vets who don't need coaching

This is the youngest team he’s had to deal with in a while, so they’re bound to individually and collectively make big mistakes. It happens. Hoodie likes vets because you get consistency out of them; rookies and second-year guys are faster and might come up with a big play, but they’ll be hot-and-cold. We knew going in that this team was young; we were a little hopeful to think they’d play like a veteran-led Belichick team, because quite frankly, they aren’t.

They’ll be better next year, and even better the year after. It just means we should expect some ugliness for the rest of this season (like we should really have expected all of this season, given their experience levels).

Too long being spoiled by Belichick’s schemes and vets who understand them.

i'll say this now.

i’ve been really spoiled as a pats fan for this whole decade. i got so used to the clutch wins and dominating playing. fighting each and every game. i’m just not seeing that this year. i do miss bruschi, brown, vrabel, harrison, evans, etc.
here’s hoping they can pull out some wins in the weeks ahead.

by mellyh on Dec 6, 2009 4:34 PM EST reply actions

Also, even though he got beat on the 4th and 6 throw Butler > Wilhite

He made too many clutch plays today for them to be overlooked by that one last one which IMHO was due to the lack of pass rush. When NFL QBs get the king of time Henne got today they will find the receivers…

And this is about the time that Hoodie would have expected Marquise Hill to enter the starting lineup, had he not been tragically killed in that boating accident.

Cleaning house probably isn’t the answer, although I wouldn’t mind if Burgess and maybe Adalius Thomas found work elsewhere. They need contributors, and those two just aren’t doing the job. I definitely smell an oncoming draft of linebackers in the near future, though.

i support that trade

u never ever see a team trade a 1st round pick for a 31 year old DE. the raiders suck and will do for nxt year..so pats get a top ten pick…which they can trade down a get a lot of picks from that.

by NinjaZX6R on Dec 6, 2009 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

It was a great trade

He came in via one first-round pick, gave Pro Bowl production for half a dozen, and then left via one first-round pick. It sucks to lose that production, but you really can’t fault Hoodie for pulling the trigger – he effectively got all that production for free, draft-wise. It means all Seymour cost was his salary. Goes some way to making up for any draft busts, past or future.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 6, 2009 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

It's not the D line's job to create QB pressure

They’re just meant to occupy the O-line. The inability of the OLBs to break rudimentary blocks and get pressure (Tully Banta-Cain and Ninkovich excepted) is on the linebackers, not the D-line. The fact that Banta-Cain and Ninkovich can get pressure suggests the D-line is doing okay – this is effectively Ninkovich’s first year as a full-time linebacker (he was previously a long-snapper), and Banta-Cain was a bust as a linebacker in the 49ers. If those two can get sacks and QB-hits, anybody ought to. Burgess and Thomas are just playing horribly.

It’s been a while since Hoodie picked up a solid pass-rusher in a lower draft round. I envy the Broncos, who’ve definitely got one.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 6, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe they would three years from now

but they’d still be rookies at this moment. They’d probably get the occasional big-play in a Hoodie scheme, but then they’d get burned for some – in other words, they’d just play like the Pats are now.

I don’t see how they could possibly contribute more at this moment than Mayo and Guyton are, especially since they are all MLBs.

Now, if you’d asked if I wished we’d taken Brian Cushing or Clay Mathews… thou shalt not covet thy rivals OLBs (but it’s tempting).

I'm not sure we need another vet

Pass-rushing 3-4 OLB / 4-3 DE is one of those few places where rookies can and will contribute straight away. Think of Peppers, Merriman, Clay Mathews or Brian Cushing. You can inject a great college DE/OLB and get NFL production out of them.

If they use a top 2 round on an OLB, they could reasonably expect that guy to be pushing for a start (even if it’s as a situational pass-rushing player) from day one.

I honestly wonder whether the Pats would’ve won two or three of those games if they’d taken Brady out in the last quarter and put in Hoyer. Not because Hoyer is better or anything, but because he is going to be tentative, gun-shy and scared. Why is that a good thing? Because he’ll look for his check-downs – running backs and Welker – and not throw long inaccurate balls to Moss on third down.

True that

except… signing fred taylor was not that bad, he played good until he was injured

forgot him but i hope he is back nxt week

WE NEED A RUNNING GAME!!…atleast 100 yards rushing for the nxt 4 games plzz

by NinjaZX6R on Dec 6, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

You need an O-line to run

I haven’t seen one in a Pats uniform, lately. The pass-pocket looks more like a hospital triage.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 6, 2009 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

Our lack of running game isn't because Taylor was out

It is the O-line and the coaching always taking Maroney out in the second after yet ANOTHER solid first half from him. Bill O’Brien is making me violent.

by bbismyhero on Dec 6, 2009 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

That's my feeling, too

And I also suspect that Maroney’s new-found fumbling issues is because he’s trying so hard to single-handedly get the run-game going, with such little help from his O-line, that he’s putting ball-security (once his strength) on a lower priority level than running hard, going strongly into contact, and trying to drag out yards after contact.

In some ways it’s more impressive than his 2007 end-of-season performances – then he was running behind 3 Pro Bowlers, after all.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 6, 2009 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

I am impressed with Maroney this year

He is playing with a lot of heart and its a shame we don’t give him more touches in the second half. We also don’t utilize him at all on screens which is retarded since he is one of our most explosive players. We did one screen to him and I think it went for 9 yards.

by bbismyhero on Dec 6, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

I don't get that, either

He’s shown he can return kicks and make big plays in open field, and swing passes are about as close to open field play as you can get. Ugh.

yeah

sometimes i wish we had the o line from the bengals on running plays only. since i sadly live in ohio…get to see the bengals a lot, all their 5 starting lineman were guards in college or guards turned tackles in the nfl. and they haven’t used that fat boy andre smith at all this year

What makes this season so infuriating is that in some ways it is the opposite of last year

Last year the coaching did an excellent job maximizing the talents of a much less talented Patriots team than this years. The 09 Patriots are a more talented team than the 08 Patriots: The Secondary is better, the QB is better, the running backs are better and the coaching staff is handicapping the talent rather than maximizing it. The 08 Patriots played to their potential given the injuries and lack of talent on the squad. The 09 Patriots are infuriating to watch because they have the talent of an elite team but don’t play anywhere near to their potential and that falls on the coaching.

brady seemed pissed

he questioned his team’s commitment, and the fact that they can’t close out the games

by NinjaZX6R on Dec 6, 2009 5:57 PM EST reply actions

he seems...

really disappointed or really pissed most games. very unlike the calm and cool QB that I know him to be. not saying he doesn’t have reason, but it is uncharacteristic.

makes me wonder about what he will do at the end of the year…

by mellyh on Dec 6, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

i Question this team too but Brady has some blam to this if their no receivers run or throw the ball away but don’t throw to the opposing team.

by patsfan1 on Dec 6, 2009 6:01 PM EST reply actions

We need a third option receiver maybe we should of kept galloway a bit longer

by patsfan1 on Dec 6, 2009 6:07 PM EST reply actions

I doubt any teams would've bothered covering him, he was just playing that badly

So he wouldn’t even be a decoy, he’d just be a waste of a roster space and an eligible man on the field.

True, and they were gambling on whether Tate would be okay

and he showed in two or three games more than Galloway did in the first half of the season.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 6, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Tate went back to IR after 2 games

And had 1 rush for 11 yards. I think it was clear to the coaching staff that his knee wasn’t 100% yet, and rather than wait for him to heal more, they ended his season so he can rehab and get better. I am excited about his potential, especially as a kick returner

by Ogor on Dec 7, 2009 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

Don’t we have one now we couldn’t have done any worse keeping him, who has brady thrown to beside Moss and welker shut them down and what

by patsfan1 on Dec 6, 2009 6:16 PM EST reply actions

Aiken, Edelman, Watson and Stanback

and I’d still take any of those guys over Galloway, even if they don’t quite have his pace.

Frankly, nobody would bother covering the guy. He dropped it in the open field as often as he caught it. A genuine third receiver is useful because you have to cover him, and Aiken’s doing a pretty good job of forcing teams to look for him – he’s made a few big receptions this season, in his first as a real WR.

by Comedic.Sans on Dec 6, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

well..

He is too important on special teams to play WR full time. You really can’t have him doing both, because he will get worn down in the 4th quarter and not be effective. They need to sign someone to play special teams, but that would mean cutting someone or putting them on IR.

by Ogor on Dec 7, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

tate was gamble from the start thats why he is not here a bad gamble to me with a guy with knee problems

by patsfan1 on Dec 6, 2009 6:18 PM EST reply actions

Only if you look at him as a short-term prospect

Randy Moss is still a fantastic receiver after a decade in the league. Knees take less time to heal than that, and plenty of guys have had knees surgeries and gone on to have productive careers.

anyone notice

the offensive play calls are so predictable now. same play calls and formations of the last two years.

by NinjaZX6R on Dec 6, 2009 6:20 PM EST reply actions

we need to stop being agressive all the time

certain times yeah, but now, we go on 4th down so often, special teams probablty expect the pun ter to run for a 1st down than an actual punt

by Give Me on Dec 6, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

well spoken aiken has come on but i’m still not to sure of him love Edelman but as for Stanback and Watson kind of given up on Watson some games you see him some games you don’t but stanback is new so he needs some time

by patsfan1 on Dec 6, 2009 6:26 PM EST reply actions

Watson stopped catching passes when the O-line got thinned out by injury

they need him in close to keep Brady upright, basically.

The Pats have no momentum at all closing out the season. They can’t go into the playoff like that and expect to advance. In fact, I don’t see them winning out the season. They will lay another egg or two along the way if ther D doesn’t turn around big time in a hurry.

by getthat18now on Dec 6, 2009 6:26 PM EST reply actions

Don’t see that happening anytime soon, i just hope Brady can win another superbowl as a patriot in his remaining years i definantely don’t want to see peyton manning go perfect and win a super bowl somethingbrady and the patriots couldn’t do getthat18now

by patsfan1 on Dec 6, 2009 6:35 PM EST reply actions

this team needs..

a CB opposite of bodden that is consistent…Butler is better than whilite but is hit or miss.Where is springs? bodden and springs at CB sounds good cuz we have 2 good veterns who won;t give up those 30 yrd plays. also we need a third/fourth reciever. Aiken is decent but we need edelman back, two slot receiever will allow brady to not just force the ball to welker or moss. Brady seemed off int he 4th quarter, maybe from all the damn hit he took even tho he wasn’t sacked. The O-line need pick it up. th final play the line broke down so fast and forced brady to throw the int. Also Tom need to stop making endzone mistakes..but that is more on bad play calling in the endzone, where we shoulda gotten maroney or faulk to pound it cuz those guys have it right now.. Pat still control their destiny and out side of the jags i think the pat can win them all IF they stop being a 3 quarter team and become a 4 quarter team. I hope belichick unleashes hell in the locker room after this game.

best thing about this game...

welker played his heart out. this guy can do no wrong.

Wana trade him back for Ted Ginn Jr?

Henne is now our leader. Lets see what the guy can do !

If you read between the lines. Brady and Welker are not happy with the play calling. Offensive Coordiantor O’Brien needs to go. Dan Pees needs to go as well.

Aiken got very lucky on that play

and he commited offensive PI

I don't know...

If he was a defender, it would have been PI for sure. However offensive PI revolves around pushing off to create seperation, and he didn’t do that. Sure he reached over the guy to catch the ball but WRs are allowed to do that, DBs are not
