What could have been? Cassel bomb in Denver...

Very very interesting story here about how Josh McDaniels tried to replace Jay Cutler with Matt Cassel, and send Cutler to the Bucs, and a Bucs pick to the Pats.

Cutler has found out and is furious!

The source said Cutler was hurt by the news that McDaniels wanted to start his Denver tenure with Cassel and not him.

"The relationship has been tarnished," the source said. "I think it's beyond repair."

Looks like both ex Patriots were competing with each other over Matty C.

You have to figure McDaniels would prefer a QB who already knows his system. What else could it be? Their numbers were actually pretty similar this year, but Cutler had a much worse team around him.

I wouldn't say that

the offense Cutler had around him was comparable to the offense that Cassel had around him.

Moss + Welker are better than Marshall + Royal, but not by that much.
The protection Cutler got this season was arguably better than the protection Cassel got.
Neither team had an amazing running game, Ben-Jarvis-Green-ellis vs. the Great White Hope, but Denver does have a zone blocking scheme that works well.

Denver has a defense like a sieve...

…which forced Cutler to throw a lot more often and force a lot more throws and artificially inflated both his numbers and those of his receivers. If Marshall didn’t lead the league in drops, he didn’t miss by much. And Moss is far better than Marshall, and Welker is significantly better than Royal.

Truthfully, there is only one area where Denver had an advantage over the Pats, and that’s the offensive line.

Denver's coaching

was also atrocious, hence the firing.

So as I said in the first place...

…similar numbers on a much worse team. So the only reason I can think of why McDaniels would prefer Cassel is that Cassel already knows his system.

Of course, with the tactless way Cutler has handled the situation and the grace that Cassel has shown over the past six months or so, maturity seems to be an issue where Cassel has a huge advantage.
