Finally, some closure to the incessant whining in the whinefest of the century. I want to be traded; I don't want to be traded; I'm mad at you because you may have included me in trade talks; I'm not calling you back. Bus C(r)ook? What should I do? Keep quiet, kid. Sooner or later, you'll get your way (and I'll get media exposure plus yank you out of that ridiculous six year rookie deal you signed, get you a better deal, and I can line my wallet in the meantime). Jay Cutler became the play thing of Bus Cook and doesn't even know it. Poor Jay, was the formula in the bottle too hot? Anyway...
Josh McDaniels, former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots and a freshman Head Coach, made a massive error, an error so ginormous it's unforgiveable. You see, McD's error was not one of gamesmanship; Cutler wanted out before he got there. McD's error was assuming a millionaire in his mid 20's was mature, that he could handle honesty. So, when the subject of trade talks came up, McDaniels denied he'd courted the idea, BUT...was honest with Jay that he could be traded...just like any other player in the NFL. Gasp, said Jay. I am a first round golden boy and the savior of Denver (Jay didn't actually say that; he had Cook do all the talking). Actually Jay, you're not. You see, I came from a place where the QB worked hard to get where he was and you know what? He has the hardware to prove it. And not only is he talented, but he's a leader. Enjoy the windy city. Putz.
As former Patriots LB Willie McGinest said:
Jay blew this way out of proportion. He's being a little to sensitive towards the situation. If every player wanted to get traded in the NFL after hearing their name in trade talks, we wouldn't be able to play any games. That's the business. It's not the first time it's happened, or last. He's a good quarterback. He should have stayed in Denver, they had a good system. The grass isn't always greener.
There's a boatload of info at SBNation's Mile High Report, but here's a snippet from NFL.com:
NFL.com's Steve Wyche reports that the Broncos will receive first-round draft picks this year and in 2010, a third-round pick (84th overall) this year and quarterback Kyle Orton in exchange for Cutler and a 2009 fifth-round selection.
Over at Windy City Gridiron, folks are pretty darn happy. I just hope they're ready to deal with his immaturity. I don't mean to berate the whole thing and I apologize to Denver and Chicago fans for going on a tear. This is good for both teams.
My ultimate hope is that Cutler, Denver, and Chicago will choose to enforce a gag order on themselves and not air their dirty laundry in public. Both teams and Cutler need to move on from this and concentrate on football. Afterall, the regular season is only five months away.
