Cutler to the Bears: Former Patriots OC McDaniels grants the QB's wish

Finally, some closure to the incessant whining in the whinefest of the century.  I want to be traded; I don't want to be traded; I'm mad at you because you may have included me in trade talks; I'm not calling you back.  Bus C(r)ook?  What should I do?  Keep quiet, kid.  Sooner or later, you'll get your way (and I'll get media exposure plus yank you out of that ridiculous six year rookie deal you signed, get you a better deal, and I can line my wallet in the meantime).  Jay Cutler became the play thing of Bus Cook and doesn't even know it.  Poor Jay, was the formula in the bottle too hot?  Anyway...

Josh McDaniels, former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots and a freshman Head Coach, made a massive error, an error so ginormous it's unforgiveable.  You see, McD's error was not one of gamesmanship; Cutler wanted out before he got there.  McD's error was assuming a millionaire in his mid 20's was mature, that he could handle honesty.  So, when the subject of trade talks came up, McDaniels denied he'd courted the idea, BUT...was honest with Jay that he could be traded...just like any other player in the NFL.  Gasp, said Jay.  I am a first round golden boy and the savior of Denver (Jay didn't actually say that; he had Cook do all the talking).  Actually Jay, you're not.  You see, I came from a place where the QB worked hard to get where he was and you know what?  He has the hardware to prove it.  And not only is he talented, but he's a leader.  Enjoy the windy city.  Putz.

As former Patriots LB Willie McGinest said:

Jay blew this way out of proportion. He's being a little to sensitive towards the situation. If every player wanted to get traded in the NFL after hearing their name in trade talks, we wouldn't be able to play any games. That's the business. It's not the first time it's happened, or last. He's a good quarterback. He should have stayed in Denver, they had a good system. The grass isn't always greener.

There's a boatload of info at SBNation's Mile High Report, but here's a snippet from NFL.com:

NFL.com's Steve Wyche reports that the Broncos will receive first-round draft picks this year and in 2010, a third-round pick (84th overall) this year and quarterback Kyle Orton in exchange for Cutler and a 2009 fifth-round selection.

Over at Windy City Gridiron, folks are pretty darn happy.  I just hope they're ready to deal with his immaturity.  I don't mean to berate the whole thing and I apologize to Denver and Chicago fans for going on a tear.  This is good for both teams.

My ultimate hope is that Cutler, Denver, and Chicago will choose to enforce a gag order on themselves and not air their dirty laundry in public.  Both teams and Cutler need to move on from this and concentrate on football.  Afterall, the regular season is only five months away.

My two cents...

1. I generally have a negative opinion of Jerry Angelo (Bears GM) going back to his Tampa days but this deal was ballsy. I liken it to the old baseball adage about getting an ace pitcher. You call the team that has the ace and say, “What do you want?” Then you say, “OK. We have a deal.” I think Cutler is a whiner but I thought he displayed that before this episode so nothing new there. It’ll be interesting to see what the Broncos do this year…see if they try and move up for Sanchez. I’m assuming Stafford goes #1 to Detroit….though I wouldn’t be shocked if they took Curry or a OT.

As for the Bears, this puts them slightly ahead of the Vikes in the NFC North. I like Rosenfels with Minnesota but he’s gotta be more consistent for them to win. The end of that Indy-Houston game really sticks with me when I think of him. Horrible game management.

2. If the BJ Raji drug test rumor is true, I hope he slips somewhere to the Pats. That’d be sweet. I still don’t think Raji gets to 23 though…even if the rumor is true.

I’ve been saying the same thing about Raji (though admittedly feel a little guilty about thinking it). I think Denver and Green Bay would be natural fits given their transition to the 3-4 and lack of true 3-4 players, Jacksonville would want him (assuming they don’t cross him off for character issues) given their DL struggles since trading Stroud, and potentially Oakland wants him more now, so it would presumably take a move into the top ten. Someone mentioned that it took Jacksonville two third’s and a four to move from #26 to #10 last year to get Harvey. If we could do it for , a three this year and next and a four, I wouldn’t be opposed to it.

I doubt a single failed drug test, especially for marijuana, will cause him to slide to 23, but it may but him in a range where we can trade up to get him. The often-quoted comparison is Warren Sapp, who fell to #12 after testing positive.

He would have to be drafted as a back-up or eventual replacement for Wilfork though. At 6-1, he’s too short to play the 3-4 DE (warren is 6-5, seymour 6-6), but obviously projects really well as a two-gap NT. I had emailed a question to National Football Post’s draft analyst Wes Bunting a few months ago, regarding whether Raji could play DE, and this is what he wrote back (thought it was interesting):

"Now I am not saying he couldn’t do it, but I think he is best utilized inside. 5-technique DE’s need length to be able to shed blocks and play off the tackles shoulders. Raji is more of a penetrator and I think he would run himself out of to many plays playing DE. …[Seymour]… is listed at like 6-6, 310 so his combo of length and size allows him to stay clean and read plays as they develop. "

Rather a linebacker

I would rather move up to get the toprated linebacker – outside of Curry, of course – on the Patriots draftboard. I could be Cushing as Football Outsiders has suggested in their mock draft.

IF the move for Raji is made it will probably mean goodbye to Vilfork next year. Since keeping, Seymour, Vilfork AND Mankins could be difficult this might not be a bad thing, but are we really sure Raji can fill his shoes?

I still subsrcibe to the school of thought that only OL, DL and QB are really worth a first round pick, with rare exception. Wilfork, Seymour, Warren, all taken in the first round. Finding the right guys to start at DL in the 3-4 is very hard, even harder now that multiple teams are deploying it.

As much as we may need ILB depth/upgrade and a better pass-rush, we, in all likelihood, aren’t going to get a step-in and play from Day 1 linebacker. Mayo’s success may have tainted expectations. If our first round pick is going to be a development project, I’d like it to be at a position that has much greater short and long-term value.

Guys like Gilbert, Sidbury, etc… who can play the 5-tech DE spot are intriguing, and I’d love to see the Pats take one in the second round, mainly because that position is so hard to find/develop. Presumably, a few of the OLB’s who we may target (English, Barwin, Sintim, etc…) may be available at #34, and we don’t need to pull the trigger in Round 1 for them.

good quote

from Peter King:

I will believe for a long time that Josh McDaniels wanted to take a passive approach here and let some rattled nerves calm down; and at some point before the draft, he’d try to make peace with Cutler. That’s the strong impression he left me with a week ago at the league meetings. But when Cutler continued to duck the Broncos, Bowlen had enough. "You do not mess with Pat Bowlen, and you definitely do not ignore him,’’ a man who knows Bowlen well told me this week. Cutler ignored him. That lit the fuse for the stunning trade to the Bears.

"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

Agreed

Tom Curran of msnbc.com made the same point when the Broncos announced they were actively shopping Cutler: In the end it got personal, not to McDaniels and the front office, but to Bowlen, who just wouldn’t put of with more.

Sad

I think this whole situation is just sad for the Denver Broncos and their fans. It is so difficult finding a good qb, and they seemed set for the next ten years with Cutler, and then this happens.

I put most of the blame on Cutler for this one – orchestrated by Cook, but I have no doubt Cutler gladly played along for a new contract – but he really is an enormous talent, though he may have to go through a couple of shallow years first. The Chicago O-line and receiver corps were not particularly strong, and the possibilities of loading up in the next couple of drafts have diminished with the trade.

Denver got the best deal they could, but if Cutler really turns into a franchise qb, they will still come out as loosers.

The whole pot has certainly been shaken

Now everyone will just have to sit back and see how it all settles. McDaniels is in the mix too. New coaches don’t have much of a grace period in this what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league, so the pressure will be on even fiercer than when he had Cutler.

Keep the faith!

I'll be interested to see what Denver does...

with the draft picks. Do they trade up looking for a QB or does one fall to them at 12?
