Day 1 NFL Draft Open Thread

Here we go, Patriots fans. All of the mocks mean nothing. All of the predictions mean nothing. This is where the rubber hits the road. Today, we find out what Belichick and crew have been brewing up in the bowels of Gillette Stadium, the war room as they say. For the Patriots, today lines up like so:
Round 1: 23
Round 2: 2(34), 15(47), 26(58)Round 3: 25(89), 33(97)
According to SI.com's Peter King, the Patriots have already tried to move up, offering Jacksonville 23 and 47 for their 8. They've been turned down, but it sparked a lot of speculation as to WHO they would go after with #8. Look for a lot of wheeling and dealing from Belichick and the gang.
No NFL network? You should be able to see the draft streamed live to your computer. Let's get this pahty stahted!!! Don't forget to check out SB Nation's very own www.mockingthedraft.com for all the latest from our onsite bloggers.

The start is almost here
According to National Football Post, the Pats will stay at 23 in the first round. Of course, you never know how the picks will go.
Minor correction: Only two rounds will be today.
Thanks for the correction!
Fixed (strikethrough) in the story line.

Maualuga
If Maualuga drops to them at #23 are they going to jump on him?
A lot of mock draft have him falling to the Pats but have the Pats passing on him.
Barwin
He may not be elite, but he has a lot of upside.

no interest at all?
Or just no interest with their current expectations/demands for compensation? Market forces at work!
Pats trade 2nd rounder for Peppers? Will Panthers take that? Can Pats afford Peppers?
They would have Peppers & Mayo without the steak & onions!
Peppers would be a good solution to the outside
Like you, I think he may be too expensive.

A Patriots pick
Considering Piolis stay with the Patriots it’s not ALL that surprising. He saw what Seymour did to our defense, and Belichick always rated D-line over linebackers. Well, he won’t be there at a spot we can reasonable trade for. Will Curry slide?

Sanchez to Jets from Patriots perspective
I like this move by the Jets. Sanchez seems like a good prospect, and I believe it will make the Jets better in two or three years.
For this year, however, this is a good move for the Patriots. The Jets will add no other impact player in this draft – at least for the short term – and Sanchez will take som time developing. (Unlike Ryan and Flacco he is a junior with limited starting experience.) It looks like rebuilding light, which was sort of already in the cards with Favre and Mangini gone.
Trade up?
There has been a few surprise picks. I believe the reasonable target for the Patriots is something like 14 (Saints) og 15 (Texans) and there will be some interesting targets there. Right now one of the top-four tackles are left, no pass-rusher has been taken, no USC-linebacker, Raji is there, Crabtree is there. Som real value is sliding.

by stillredsoxfan on Apr 25, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Why?
Why would they try to acquire more picks this year? They already have too many!
There has to be something else going on!
So who do you cut?
There’s no cap room for Peppers.
Personally
not high on Peppers. I was just playing with your suggestion, and it would have to be a major acquisition.
You're missing the point
The Pats already had 11 picks. Now they have 12.
Where are you going to put 12 players on this roster?
Not really
And it would be really dumb to draft for the practice squad. You’d be better off trading to get picks for next year.
It doesn't make much sense to take both
If the Pats are high on Woods and Crable, they’d only take one OLB, not two.
I still have to think they’re trying to get a player or picks for next year by trade. They just dealt this pick to the Packers.
Pats still want to trade down

Trade

Something Must Be Up
I can’t see them taking all those players in the 2nd and 3rd. Must have something lined up for next year. I hope.
Same guy, new name.
by stillredsoxfan on Apr 25, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions
There's absolutely no way they make all those picks
There has to be a trade. Belichick wouldn’t just waste resources by making 13 picks this year.
LOL I know
Crazy….pick #41 to Arizona for Boldin
It would take more than that
And that would still leave 12 picks, which is about 5 too many.
Now, if it was #34 and #41 and one or two late round picks to Arizona for Boldin, that I might believe. But with Moss, Welker, Galloway, and a couple other receivers already on the roster, I don’t think it’s likely.
Agreed
What do they have now? 4 picks in the 2nd round? I’d be shocked if they drafted 4 guys in the 2nd. Not to mention they can’t trade the supplemental 3rd rounders. So they have to take them right?
Same guy, new name.
by stillredsoxfan on Apr 25, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, they have to take the supplementals
The others are all tradeable, though, and I think we’re going to see something big in the next hour or so.
I know we value midround picks
but are we seriously going to draft 4 secondrounders and 3 thirdrounders?
You can't get anything worthwhile for late round picks
Some of the 2nd rounders are going to be traded. I’d like to see two of them traded away for a first next year.
And we haven't even made a single pick!
Just wait until Bill makes a few more trades and we end up with 32 picks in the 7th round!
That’s what I was thinking. If we get him at 34 I’ll be ecstatic.
by LegendaryTadpole on Apr 25, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions
They need O-line help pretty desperately
It’s going to come down to whether they take the best player on the board or draft for their biggest need.
You have to think Boldin isn't going anywhere
Otherwise, the Giants or Titans would have come up with something other than drafting rookie receivers.
From realpatriots twitte
Patriots now have 4 second round picks (34, 41, 47, 58) and 4 third round picks (73, 83, 89, 97). Also, a 4th, a 5th, two 6ths and one 7th.
Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit
And there's no way they actually exercise more than about half of those...
…but at this point, I half expect them to trade #34 for a mid-second rounder and another fourth.
I'd understand that later in the round...
…but I’d rather see Maualuga or Barwin right now.
So...
Another undersized guy in the secondary? Why not Maualuga or Laurinaitis?

Good
he was washed up a few years ago and he single handily lost the Super Bowl.

Exaggerate much?
The offensive line had nothing to do with it? Samuels letting an interception go right through his hands had nothing to do with it?

I don’t remember Harrison having to play any O-line in that Super Bowl.
Same guy, new name.
by stillredsoxfan on Apr 25, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Chung is one guy I really wanted, although later in the second. He is the guy who will replace Harrison. Probably the best S in the draft. He is a huge hitter, good in coverage, very good against the run. Rey and Lat both projected out as back ups in a 3-4. Neither are very good in coverage and only average against the run. That is why they fell. Look for Barwin with the next pick if he is still on the board or Butler from Uconn.
He's not that good in coverage
He was adequate one-on-one against slot receivers in college. You can’t expect him to be better in the pros.
I think he would have been a fine pick later in the round, but at #34? I don’t get it.
It means he was the highest rated player they had on the board. I have to assume that BB thinks the kid is a stud. I like the pick. Looking at who is still on the board I dont see who is much better that can fill a need now.
Also add Gilbert from San Jose State as a player that Pats could take soon as well.
If he was the highest rated player they had on the board, they don’t rate this draft class very highly at all, so they really ought to be trading picks into next year instead of accumulating more this year.
Yeah, like that!
Though I don’t know what they gave up yet to move up…

Via twitter. Patriots are trading with Oakland to move up to #40 in exchange for #47 and #124 and #199. Patriots have the next 2 picks.

So now we have 40 and 41?
Or is there another trade coming? 40 and 41 for something next year?
NO PAT WHITE
Please dont waste one of these on Pat White.
I don't get it
Are they planning on letting Wilfork go?
Brace is a nose tackle, not an end
But even if he was an end, are they planning on letting Seymour go?
I don’t get it.
See, right there --
Carolina just traded their #1 next year to San Francisco for the right to pick Everette Brown. I’d rather have another #1 next year than Ron Brace.
Plus
Denver did something similar at the top of the second right? Didn’t they trade a 1st rounder next year to move up? Wasn’t sure of the details.
Same guy, new name.

At least that pick makes sense
Still need an OLB, though.
Good value
here I guess. But apparantly Bill is the only one not worried about the linebacking corps and the pass rush.
Ha! The Bills just took a punt returner!
They still don’t have a left tackle!
so many picks
maybe = Julius Peppers?

And who will you cut?
Not enough cap space.
Besides, everyone in Carolina’s front office would have to have a lobotomy before we’d get Peppers for the picks we have left.
Seymor
he is past his prime.

And you'd replace him with whom?
Peppers would be an OLB. And while Seymour’s best years may be behind him, he’s a lot better than his numbers would indicate. You’d be doing severe damage to the D-line and you’d probably still have to cut another player or two to be able to pay Peppers.
Javris green would do fine as a replacement
Mabye you trade Wilfork for a pick or two next year.

Green is a very good #3 defensive end, but he’s still a backup, nothing more. And you’re decimating one of the team’s strengths for the sake of adding one player. And you still haven’t explained how you’ve managed to lobotomize everyone in Carolina to convince them to make that trade.
No offense, but I’m glad you’re not the one making the personnel decisions.
Peppers is out - hopefully
I don’t see how we can get Peppers without throwing in next year’s firstrounder – and he is just not worth that.
If that's all it took, I'm sure Belichick would have offered this year's first rounder
That still wouldn’t solve the salary cap issue, of course, but it’s clear that that wouldn’t have gotten the deal done.
Who played when fragile Seymour was hurt?

Who played when Brady was hurt?
Does that mean we should have traded Brady and kept Cassel?
Jarvis Green is a good player
But, he’s not Richard Seymour. Green is pretty good playing against the pass, but he’s not as stout against the run as Seymour is. That’s a sacrifice you have to take into consideration when you replace a guy like Seymour (and I’d hardly call the guy “fragile”).
Pat White
= more better wildcat.

Hey all
Have to admit Patrick Chung wasn’t on my radar, but I like Brace and Butler. Even Wilfork was pulling for New England to draft a “big guy” DT. He won’t replace Wilfork for now but will be a back up to eventually replace him in my opinion. He’s like a Ted Washington in size.
Keep the faith!
Da Raiders
Are super smart. A safety not likely to be drafted in the second round. Awesome.
Baseball is God's sport! All Truth Goes Through Three Stages 1.It is ridiculed 2.It is violently opposed 3.Finally, it is accepted as self-evident. kinesiologist
Phew.
Watching the draft is exhausting (and it’s even worse when we keep trading back without making a pick). I’m gonna wait a while before I make any judgments on the draft, because Belichick’s choices usually take a while to process and sink in with me. I’m surprised we didn’t trade any of our second rounders for a first next year, and since we haven’t chosen any linebackers, I’m going to assume the Patriots like where they’re at with the pass rush.
I still think an ILB to pair next to Mayo would be a smart decision to prepare for Bruschi’s eventual departure.
No one liked Mayo
and he turned out great so let almighty Bill be the man and stfu if you don’t like it.

6'8"
This guy’s a monster. I think he’s a bit of a reach, though.
Me too, but I think we probably could have had this guy in the 3rd or 4th round. In the meanwhile, we could have had someone who is less of a project, like Duke Robinson at guard or a TE to be Watson’s eventual replacement, or traded the pick away into next year.
Well, given how things go every year...
how can you tell he’d have been there?? Obviously, the Pats liked him and it’s better to have the player you value rather than watch him excel in another jersey. Things never work out in the draft according to anyone’s pre-draft mocks/depth charts. Vollmer had an excellent Shrine Game and boosted his stock. Good for the kid to have an excellent opportunity.
Mr. Negative
This guy is for the run game and well become better at pass protection via practice. He is very tall so it is easier for smaller DE to get under his shoulder pads and drive him off the line and get by him but it is not due to lack of strength only poor hip sink.

Reality = negative?
If we could have had him in the third or fourth round, explain to me how it makes sense to take him in the second. But first, I’m still waiting to hear how you’d convince Carolina to give us Peppers for a second rounder and ten second-day picks.
Pass Rusher?
Still waiting for them to draft a pass rusher. Four picks in the 2nd round and not one on a guy who can get after the QB? I’m a little surprised at that turn of events.
Anyone else think they will end up trading 2 of those 3rd rounders for next year and keep their supplementals (since they have to use them)?
