Day 2 NFL Draft Open Thread

Here we are, gang; the second day of the NFL Draft. The picks go like so for the Patriots:
- Round 3 - 9(73), 19(83), 25(89), 33(97)
- Round 4 - No picks
- Round 5 - 34(170)
- Round 6 - 34(207)
- Round 7 - 25(234)
I'd suspect some (or many) of these picks to be traded away either today or next year, but who knows. Here we go...

awesome
Now that’s what I’m talking about! Nice trade. Let’s see if we can pull it off once or twice more, I’d be happy giving up all our 3rd rounders this year if we can get 2’s for next year.
We can't trade the last one
You can’t trade supplementary picks. The best we could hope for there is a deal whereby the Pats would take a specific player on the condition that another team would give us something for him.
From Mike Reiss
The Patriots trade 73 to Jacksonville.
In return, they get a 2010 second-round pick and a 2009 seventh-rounder (232rd overall).
Good trade. They needed it more than we did and were willing to give us 2 for next year.

haha that's right
After the draft is over we should compile a list of all the teams we have picks in next year’s draft from, so we have a “hate list” of teams to root against. :)
We already have one
Dolphins, Jets, Colts (though we actually respect them), and now the Jaguars.
I’d put the Bills on the list too, but you know they’re going to go 7-9 no matter what.
Correction
Not 2 for next year, 1 this year and 1 next year

Missing A Pick?
I think you are missing a pick in the main post. The Pats have pick #25(89) in the 3rd round right? At least according to the board on yahoo.com they do.

They came into today with four picks in the third round
Three are left, of which one can’t be traded. I wouldn’t mind seeing the other two (#83 and #89) packaged for another second rounder next year.
Quite Possible
I’m hoping for the same. I knew last night that there was no way they were going to take 4 picks in the 3rd after already drafting 4 guys in the 2nd. No where to put all those guys.

And bear in mind, they have to take #97, #170, and #207. So even if they trade every other pick left, they still have to take seven rookies. Add to those the two seventh rounders — who would trade for those? — and figure they’re exercising at least nine picks, with the two sevenths likely fodder for the practice squad at best.
Picks That Are Left
3 19 (83)
3 25 (89)
3 33 (97)*
5 34 (170)*
6 34 (207)*
7 23 (232)
7 25 (234)
I got this from SI.com. Chart with all the Pats picks. They can’t trade the asterisked picks. Those are the compensatory pick ones.
I agree with you. Looks like too many picks right now. Can’t wait to see what they do.

TE
They’re the top-rated players left on the board, and we need a replacement for Watson after this year anyway.
wow
So we picked a… pot-smoking WR? Not sure about this one, I guess the Pats think they can clean him up. I’m a bit puzzled on this one though—seems to be a major boom-or-bust pick to me.
Torn ACL Too
According to these guys he tore his ACL in October.

so long as he ain’t DUIing I don’t care bout his personal life.
“The injury brought a close to his career, but he was highly regarded by the staff. “The good news is that he will be back, and he will recover from this. I shared with him that two of the best receivers that I ever had the opportunity to be around as a coach both had equally significantly damaging injuries,” head coach Butch Davis said, on the injury to Tate, referring to his experiences with former Miami stars Michael Irvin and Reggie Wayne."
Hopefully he will recover like those two.
Analysis
Positives: Long, lean build. Good quickness, size and hand strength to get off the line of scrimmage against press coverage. Emerging route-runner with the quick feet and balance to ultimately be quite good in this area. More quick than fast, though he has good acceleration. Elusive in the open field and has the vision to set up his blocks and break into the open field. Soft hands. Good body control and flexibility to contort his body for the poorly thrown pass. Can extend to make the diving grab. Good height and long arms and uses the combination well to high-point passes over smaller cornerbacks. Excellent returner with NFL ability for punt and kickoff returns.
Negatives: Torn ACL and MCL in October means he won’t be able to answer questions about his straight-line speed until after the draft. Primarily a return specialist until flashing as a receiver as a senior. A bit raw as a route-runner. Relies on his athletic ability in this area, rather than precise footwork. Lets too many passes get into his pads.

That has to be a pick for 2010
Belichick must think he can step in for Galloway with a year to learn the system. Either that, or he’s just supposed to free up Hobbs to play defense only and not have to return kicks.
+1
According to Mike Mayock he’s probably going to go on the pup list and not play till 2010. He was talking him up a little bit.

Interesting
I guess BB isn’t scared of developing WRs even after the fiascos with Bethell Johnsen and Chad Jackson. We probably have so many picks that it seems worth taking a flyer on a big risk / big upside pick.
I didn't know a smoking buddy for Moss and Faulk was a need
;)

brilliant
Another great move. We’re now positioned with three 2nd-round picks in next year’s draft, right? That rocks. It also gives us some trade leverage in the (I think, unlikely) event we are still considering a trade to the Panthers for Peppers.
Forget about Peppers
There’s no money under the cap to pay him, and the Panthers want a hell of a lot more than a few second rounders for him anyway.
Looking good
I was a bit worried we would end up with all our picks – or get a disappointing return in trades – but this is cool. Three second-rounders essentially guarantees the same kind of flexibility next year.
I already indicated above the way to do it
You’d have to come to an agreement with another team for something in exchange for drafting a specific player.
No doubt we’d hear “the Pats are cheating!” if it happened, though.
true
Good point, I didn’t think about the draft-and-trade approach. And I missed where you posted that above.
Updates Via Twitter
The Patriots now have 3 picks in the 2nd round of the 2010 NFL Draft. With 5 picks left, the next 3 are compensatory and can’t be traded.

Pick
The Patriots have selected Tyrone McKenzie, OLB, South Florida

Analysis
Positives: Some versatility to play inside and in space. … “Sam” linebacker who lines up in the stack and nine-techniques. … Holds his ground adequately against tackles on outside run plays, can shed to turn play inside or make the tackle. … Breaks down in the open, and can wrap up elusive runners in space. … Brings his hips to hit ballcarriers straight on, and will put his helmet on the ball to create a turnover. … Gets a fair punch on tight ends to knock them off the line, and stays with them in coverage. … Will chase and hustle downfield, giving second or third effort on inside runs plays to get to the ball.
Negatives: Could be considered a bit of an inside-outside “tweener” by NFL teams. … Not especially fluid dropping into coverage. … Comes out of the game in nickel situations and probably will do so in the NFL. … Not quick enough to corral slot receivers in zones. … Doesn’t have the great strength or bulk to fight his way through trash inside.
Compares To: BARRETT RUUD, Tampa Bay - Put McKenzie in a Cover-2 scheme and let him roam the field. With his versatility, he can line up for a few plays at each linebacker position to keep the offense’s blocking schemes having to account for him at all times. He is a very good read&-react type and does a fine job of getting everyone lined up. He needs to improve his lower body strength, but his ability to make plays on the move is his best asset.

Pats Next Pick
About 60 picks to go till the Patriots are on the clock again. The Patriots don’t pick again till the 5th round, pick 34 (170) unless they trade up (doubtful at this point).

Surprising
but I guess somebody had to go. With Butler, Wilhite, Wheatley as own picks + Springs and Bodden as FA it was getting crowded.
I always liked Ellis Hobbs, but it will be weird seeing him team up with Samuel on another team.

With Duke Robinson still on the board?
I don’t get this one either.
my thoughts too
I thought Robinson was a borderline 1st round guy? Why in the world is NOBODY picking him? I don’t get it…maybe he had a positive drug test from the combine or something that the media didn’t catch whiff of? I just don’t understand how the guy who was ranked the #1 OG in the entire draft can drop all the way to the 4th round and not get picked.
Anyone?
Not really
We get two fifth round picks from the Eagles: 137 and 141

NFL.com's analysis of Ohrnberger:
This is a classic Patriots pick. Ohrnberger is a solid guy who is fundamentally sound with really good technique. They could train him to be a backup tackle as well as putting him at guard. Right now, he’s a better run blocker than pass blocker. He will fill a utility role as a rookie and probably earn a starting job two years from now.
also
I read online somewhere that he is considered a “mauler.” Last O-lineman the Pats drafted that I clearly remember being described that way is one Logan Mankins.
If this guy can be half the lineman Mankins has become, then this is a great pick in the 4th round.
we must be 100% sold on Butler
I’ve never been a huge Ellis Hobbs fan by any stretch of the imagination, but we must be completely convinced Butler is going to be a starter from day 1 if we were willing to trade him for two 5th round picks.
Agreed
Hobbs has been serviceable, at best. We WILL miss his return capabilities, but Darius Butler is apparently a solid return man. Eagles just reunited Samuel and Hobbs.
Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit
Actually
We still have four veterans to hold the fort untill Butler is ready: Wilhite, Wheatley, Bodden and Springs.
He could be the nickel guy this year
Figure Springs and Bodden are the starters, with Bodden leaving after this year. Butler plays nickel this year and slides into the starting lineup next year, and we have another year to see what we have in last year’s CBs.
No OLB
pass rush was a major issue and we didnt select a olb- can this mean anything other that jason taylor to pats or crable is the man?
my thoughts too
I remember thinking to myself this morning in the shower, “This makes it all the more likely Pats are gonna redouble their efforts to snag Taylor.” Has anyone paid attention to what Miami has been doing? If they haven’t picked any pass rushers, I am worried the Fins are gonna offer Taylor a contract—which I am sure he’d take if given the opportunity.
Another lineman
I thought the O-line needed some help, but we have a lot of guys under contract already. We are approaching a roster cut-down massacre.
OT
At least according to ESPN and Louisville.

Seems like an intriguing prospect
Pick 198
With the 25th pick in the sixth round, the Patriots select LS Jake Ingram from Hawaii.
Same guy, new name.
by stillredsoxfan on Apr 26, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Overview
A former defensive end switched to long snapper during the 2005 season, head coach June Jones believed Ingram was too valuable to be a reserve on defense. NFL scouts are likely to agree with Jones’ assessment of Ingram as a long-snapper. Ingram is clearly the top prospect in the country at the vital, if underappreciated, position. He’s not a big bruiser who could play center in a pinch but his accuracy and velocity will be valued by teams looking for a reliable snapper. Had an arm span of 31 3/4 inches and a hand span of 9 inches at the combine.
"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick
Good long snappers are crucial
Just think about a punter, backed up against his goal line, getting a ball launched over his head.
Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit
That's a very happy thought
Can we get that long snapper signed to the Dolphins?
Streak? That's not a streak!
I’ve been told on more than one occasion that I am the antichrist.
Why not
when we have a stoked team and a conventional fifth-round pick would end up being cut anyway?
We actually need a long snapper
Ours signed with Denver.

Kinda
we stole Hodel (Arizona’s LS), so we didn’t need one. but it’ll be nice to have a little mini-camp competition, like with gostkowski last year
You're right, I missed that
Still, if memory serves, I’m bigger than Hodel, so he can’t be used for anything other than long snapping. The Pats would be better served if they have a reliable long snapper who could also play on the line in a pinch.
Pats Pick
With the 34th selection in the sixth round, 207th overall, the Patriots select DL Myron Pryor of Kentucky. via twitter

NT or DE?
Reiss projects him to be a NT. It seems they’re focusing on making wilfork be expendable. i think seymour’s and green’s contract is up too, but we haven’t gotten a DE to replace them… are we definitely resigning them? i’d rather have wilfork over seymour..
NT (I Think)

Patriots Have Two Picks Remaining
They have two picks remaining in the 7th round. They have pick 23 (232) and 25 (234). If they make both of those picks they will end the day having drafted a total of 12 players.

Here's an interesting pick
Julian Edelman, “WR” out of Kent State.
There are two possibilities here: either he’s a pick for the practice squad, intended to mimic the Wildcat, or BB expects he can run our own version of the Wildcat, hereafter to be known as the “Minuteman.”
WR Or QB?
I see him listed as both in different places.

Don't put too much into this
late-round picks are essentially lottery tickets. If they pan out, great, but you can hardly EXPECT them to replace high-profile starters.
