With the 83rd pick, the New England Patriots select WR Brandon Tate, NC
Interesting pick, and clearly one designed to add value in 2010, Brandon comes to us with a few issues: a) he failed a drug test at the combine (marijuana) and b) he tore his ACL and MCL in October, 2008. That and we're fairly deep at receiver (Moss, Welker, Galloway, Lewis), but Galloway's contract is up at the end of '09. Typical Belichick, he's stockpiling players at critical spots. This gives them a year in the system, gaining valuable exposure to experienced vets and coaches. From draftcountdown.com:
Whichever team drafts him will need to take a long-term approach with his development but that patience could be rewarded handsomely...Has the ability to be not only a terrific #2 / #3 wideout but also a Pro Bowl-quality return guy.
Pats Pulpit scouted him a little while ago and he could have a lot of upside. Again, this is a forward thinking pick and not one that will show value right off the bat. Patience, grasshopper, patience.
