Derrick Burgess: What would you give?
Much has been speculated regarding the Pats wanting to trade with the Raiders for Derrick Burgess. The recent signing of Ellis by Oakland and their acknowledgment that they are in fact trying to trade Burgess seems to enhance the prospects that they will deal him to the Patriots.
What seems curious to me is that reading comments from Raider fans, and seeing reports attributed to the Raiders themselves, there is a sense of great value regarding Burgess that just is not realistic.
Now, I suspect much of this perception of exaggerated worth comes from the aftermath of the trade for Randy Moss. What many fail to recall about that situation is that it was far from clear that Moss was going to excell for the Pats once they acquired him. He was in the last year of his contract. He had shown little desire for the game in Oakland. His numbers were very pedestrian. It was far from a sure thing that he would be setting the season record for TD catches the day the trade was made. I assume the Raiders weren't getting any better offers elsewhere. At the time many had serious questions whether the Pats had traded for a player with a bad attitude that would create problems for the team chemistry.
In this Burgess situation there are similarities. He has not played well in some time. Actually, he has not played much at all of late due to injuries. He is unhappy with his contract and his lot in Oakland. He has only one year left on his contract. From the Patriots perspective trading for him is a clear risk. Maybe it will work out great, maybe it will be throwing away a draft pick. Whatever the case the Pats still would be faced with having to pay considerable cash to retain his services after this year. The final analysis should be that giving a 3rd rounder is a fair trade. Otherwise, the Raiders can keep the 30 year old, oft injured, signed for one year, unhappy player.

Good analysis
A thirdrounder should be absolutely max for a player probably over the top.
I don’t see it happening, though, because the Raiders just won’t take the PR-risk of trading him to the Patriots at a reasonable price. (Moss trade etc.)

I’d take him for a 5th or 6th, but I don’t really see a glaring need for a player like Burgess. You only trade high draft picks to fill those glaring holes.

personally
With us stocking up so many picks for next year’s draft, I could be happy with a 3rd or 4th rounder. It all depends on the worth BB sees for him in the Patriots system. I haven’t seen enough of him due to his injuries in the past couple of years for me to even want to go out and grab him. Plus we would have to come to some kind of new contract agreement. I can’t see BB taking a risk on this guy unless he was willing to come over for a contract that qualifies for the veteran minimum, with some performance based elevators maybe.

only if we need him
first we need to give our younger guys a chance. But burgess would still be a good addition to our pass rush just in case. being a DE in a 4-3 system, he would be a nice linebacker that could would in a 3-4. money shouldn’t be too much factor since we can just sign him a 1 year deal. and for those reasons, a 4th or just a 5th should do just fine.

Does anybody know...
…what his cap hit would be? I’m curious what it would take to make room for him.

I believe
his contract is for $2.2 million this year. What of that is cap hit I don’t know. I suspect all of it.

Thanks.
As for the original question, I wouldn’t give up anything higher than a third if it were to happen. He’s in the last year of his contract and while he would be a useful pass rusher for us, he’s not as strong against the run. It would also depend on the amount of money he’s demanding for a future contract.
I’d rather just keep the draft pick, though.

Cap Hit
His cap hit would be $2.2 million next year indeed. However, he has an incentive-laden contract that includes $6 million in bonuses, but I can’t find what those incentives are.
