"Why Pats fans, why?"

I've always been one of those people who have a morbid fascination with the things most contrary to those which I hold dearest. For example, I am a die-hard fan of Miller Lite. I've drank it for years. Love it, can't get enough of it. Considering naming my first-born child after it. Well, every once in a while I'll be at my favorite sports bar, aptly named The Sportsden, watching a Colts game perhaps, and I'll get the wild notion to order a Budweiser, seemingly out of nowhere.

"Why would you do this?", one might ask, when Miller Lite is the obviously superior beverage. Do you enjoy waking up the next morning with a splitting headache and the taste of fresh dump in your mouth?

The answer is, no, I do not. But sometimes I just can't help but wonder, "What makes this so great that thousands of idiots would spend their hard-earned dollars on an obviously inferior product?"

Earlier today I had the same thought about the New England Patriots

And like so many times in my past, instead of letting this errant thought go to wherever it is that unworthy thoughts go to after your brain is done farting them out, I decide to find out what attraction people have to these, the Buttweisers of Professional Football.

Now, I decide that the fastest way to know the heart and mind of the smelly beast known as  the Pats Fan would be to observe him in his natural environment. A place where, being amongst others of his kind, he would be most relaxed and forthcoming with his innermost thoughts and desires. So, I decide, my friends to enter the lair of the beast itself, the dreaded Pats Pulpit, Blogspot of the Devil...

I mean, if I wanted to divine the inner workings of the average fan of the greatest team in professional sports, the Indianapolis Colts, I would visit Stampede Blue, a worthy blogspot that hosts a variety of blogs, fanposts, comments and discussions by fans on the topic of their favorite team, the Indianapolis Colts. Now, that being given, one might conclude that the same might be said of the den of the enemy, the Pats Pulpit.

Right?

Wrong.

Upon visiting this ghost town of a site, the first thing I noticed (other than the proverbial tumbleweeds blowing across my vision) was the absence of my intended subject of study, the Pats Fan. It felt rather like those portions of National Geographic that we, the viewers, never see, in which the film crew sits for hours and days waiting... waiting for the merest hint of a sighting of their subject of study, the ever-elusive howler monkey (the howler monkey being the animal who's incessant shrieking jabber I most closely liken to that of a Pats fan), but who must finally pack up their gear and go home empty-handed.

Now don't get me wrong, this site appears to be professionally run and full of well-written and informative posts on the subject of the most overrated team in professional sports, the New England Patriots, but what it glaringly seems to lack is readers. At least the kind that participate...

Just by looking at the home page one can readily see the lopsided comparison to that of Stampede Blue. Due to my love of all things sports I felt compelled to dissect this. To see it in X's and O's. To break it down. So, in the finest tradition of sports, I give you this...The Statistical Comparison:

Frequency of featured posts (the time elapsing between the most recent blog and the last one on the home page approximately):

  • Stampede Blue: 64 hrs.
  • Pats Pulpit: 63.5 hrs.
  • Like I said, pretty well-ran site, almost dead-on with ours.

Frequency of fanposts (how far back do the top ten headlines go back in the Recent Fanposts section):

  • Stampede Blue: 17 days (avg. 1 post every 40.8 hrs.)
  • Pats Pulpit: about a month (approx. 1 post every 72 hrs.)
  • Not very good for the Pats fans. We outpace them with posts occurring 43.3% more frequently. (Note: This may, however, be attributed to the fact that most Pats fans are known to be knuckle-dragging illiterates.)

Number/frequency of comments made on top ten fanposts combined (how much we the fans care about what others on our respective sites say):

  • Stampede Blue: 128 comments (approx. 1 comment every 3 hrs. 11 mins.)
  • Pats Pulpit: 96 comments (approx. 1 comment every 7.5 hrs.)
Pretty bad considering their posts have been up 43.3% longer than ours. Conclusion: Pats fans are less than half as likely to listen to each other as opposed to listening to themselves.

Number of comments made on featured posts written by staff writers as seen on the home page (how much the fans care about the content being provided to them by their favorite fan site):

  • Stampede Blue: 115 comments
  • Pats Pulpit: 8 comments
Yes, boys and girls, you read that right, 8. A measly 8 comments compared to our 115. Pathetic...

And so on my search for the answer to the question "Why would one wish to be a Patriots fan when you could be a fan of the vastly superior and nearly god-like Indianapolis Colts?", I must concede defeat.

It seems that some of life's mysteries were just never meant to be solved...

(Note: all numbers based on the appearance of said home pages as of 12:00 p.m., July 4th. Maybe this had something to do with the results of my imperfect study. There's a good chance most Pats fans were too busy at local hospitals being treated for fireworks-related injuries to their throwing hands due to their inability to properly time their release. Ohhhh...)

The views expressed in these FanPosts are not necessarily those of the writers or SBNation.

Very funny.

Really, that was funny. But logic states, if the Colts are god-like, the Pats are God Himself. And God drinks Sam Adams.

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA

If you’re sadistic, go with the 90 Minute, but it’s like chewing molasses as most double IPA’s are.

Am I the only beer drinker in the world

who thinks all IPAs are crap? It’s like the brewers have a contest to see who can cram the most hops into a 12 oz bottle. If I wanted a mouthful of bitter greenery, I’d have a radicchio salad.

LOL

Agreed. I happen to love IPA’s, but not the doubles and triples. I’m an admitted hop head, but most brewers crank up the malt to match and then the beverage starts becoming something different.

IPAs are actually great.

Especially Blue Point Brewery’s Hoptical Illusion IPA. It’s the way to go!

Though I do tend to keep a distance from the Doubles and Triples. I’ll have a Double once in a while, but I’m not hardcore over it.

I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!

Hah!!

I’m occasionally in Holtsville, NY (about 8 miles north of Blue Point Brewery). I’ll have to swing by.

Hey, if our favorite players can take a vacation,

and BB, the Grand Poobah himself can jet off to celebrate his July 4th weekend, then by golly so can I, a humble Patriots fan. Got a little sunburn by the way, but it was worth it to finally spend a day at the ocean.

You Indy fans should try it sometime. Come out of your basements, get some fresh air and absorb some of that Vitamin D – good for the body and raises the spirits.

LOL

I spent a four-day weekend camping in Santa Barbara – not all of us even have basements. =-)

We’ll be camping up in Maine next week and something tells me that it might be different from Santa Barbara camping. By the way, see what important discussions you missed while away?

it's an addiction for sure

The good thing (and the tough thing) about where we camp is that there is no cell phone service or internet. Electronics only last for the quality-time, sardine-packed van ride up to our site. Deciding who gets the lone charger outlet? Priceless.

Lack of participation

Given the bulk of offseason comments and/or posts are along the lines of “what roster/draft/trade/free-agent pickups we need to make our team better”, perhaps the lack of such on Pats Pulpit is actually an indication of a superior team? A team with less holes needs less roster help, after all. Maybe the Colts need a lot of help? Heh.

by Comedic.Sans on Jul 5, 2009 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

Good point.

And since a couple of pundits have already pronounced the Pats “Team of the decade” and every power ranking places the Pats at #1 or at least ahead of the Colts, that lends credence to your supposition.

by BabeParilli on Jul 6, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting observation

When there’s little wrong with your team, there’s little to say. Sure, I’m mystified at the lack of a pass rushing OLB, Maroney’s a question mark, and Brady is a concern until I see him in training camp and pre-season, but there’s no glaring holes with this team. We, as Patriots fans, are capable of saying “In Belichick We Trust” because he has consistently proven, time and time again, that he is THE best coach of the decade. If it’s broken, he’ll fix it and if it ain’t broken, he’ll have a plan in case it ever DOES break.

Well hopefully Brady's alright.

I was at the Colts/Pats game last year at the Luke and while it was very gratifying to see the greatest team of all time, the Indianapolis Colts, beat up on Matt Cassel & co. in prime-time, I just couldn’t help but feel slightly cheated out of getting to see Giselle’s girlfriend, Tom Brady, take the butt-whipping personally.

(But then again, that feeling of being cheated may have come from the fact that I bought my tickets before the season started for an outrageously over-inflated price. They were going for less than half the day-of since Brady was out and the Colts started last season with all the rapidity of a cold diesel engine.)

by peytonsurdaddy on Jul 6, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugghh...painful on the tix

That is true. I’ve heard the same sentiment (no Brady vs. Manning histrionics) from many Colts fan. Although I wouldn’t call 18-15 a butt whooping. Our backup QB very nearly ended the Colts’ bid for a playoff spot. It was a chess match all the way between Dungy and Belichick. If it weren’t for a few mystifying moves by Belichick, I think we could’ve eeked that one out. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.

Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit

by MaPatsFan on Jul 6, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Indy won that game

but by no means did the Colts “beat up on Matt Cassel & co.” In fact, you should be embarrassed that the game hinged on a dropped pass and a stupid penalty. The fact that you paid an outrageous price to attend only makes it worse.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Jul 6, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

i agree i hope brady is ok that way pats fans will have no excuse for them getting beat by the colts again this season. lets just say i think the mannings are starting to get to tommy boy, the black sheep of the nfl qb’s. otherwise known as the product of a cheating coach and bad system. seriously when the colts lose marvin harrison [greatest reciver in colts history] and still have a better team the the pats its pretty sad. lets just say that moss could make any qb better if you want a real line on brady’s talent just look at the season before moss, welker, and stallworth got there. Now stallworth is gone and gaffney is filling in the slot. Signing everyone elses garbage make the pats exactly that garbage. so when a pats game comes on tv this year i will watch it and emphatically refer to it as garbage time…

by jbots317 on Jul 6, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Brady is fine.

We appreciate your concern though.

Yup, violating the rules is never cool. But in the grand scheme of things it’s probably not as bad as stealing another city’s team in the middle of the night.

I don’t get what you mean about Moss making Brady better. Moss was considered washed up by many until Tom Brady started throwing him the ball.

I guess the most real line on Brady’s talent would be those 5 rings of his.

by BabeParilli on Jul 6, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Just a clarification please.

You say the Pats are cheaters because they taped defensive signals which is allowed by the rules. They just taped them from an improper location. So they are cheaters to you because the location was improper?

I just want to get a clear picture of what you consider cheating.

by BabeParilli on Jul 6, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow!

I would like to have a discussion with you about our favorite teams (mine being the Patriots and yours being the Colts), but you’ve essentially walked into a Patriots blog and started telling us how much our team sucks and that they’re cheaters.

It’s clear you’re new to this.

Blogger at SBNation's Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit

by MaPatsFan on Jul 6, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Well MPF

thanks to the narcissistic retard Goodell we will have to endure this nonsense for eternity as fans of teams we dominated try to grasp for any excuse to explain away that domination.

You have to feel for Colts fans. They have had a number of very very great teams over the last decade. If the Pats weren’t the Pats the Colts would surely have been the dynasty. So they cling to the cheaters nonsense in order to be able to think, “we were really the best team”. It’s sad but understandable to an extent. Colts fans must feel kind of like Sox fans felt for so long.

Funny how Colts fans think

12-5 was so much better than 11-5. You won one more Game then our back-up to the stars QB did. I question whether patonsurdaddy actually watched the Pats/ Colt game. Then again, like most colts fans, they tend to think more highly of Paton the the colts. Did you forget that Brady took most or all of his records away? Oh and by the way, the Pats won a bowl without a Marvin ‘the gun man’ Harrison on the team… at the end of the day the only team this decade (and I have to admit QB) that is even close to the rare air of the Pats are the Steelers as it relates to championship teams. But then again Eagle fans think their QB and team are the best too. Have a great season Colts fans, you will probably make the playoffs AGAIN and will Lose in the first or second round AGAIN! But Pats fans, don’t hate or make fun of the colts fans, it is like making fun of the kid in the helmet on the short bus!
