Around SBN: Post-UNC Thoughts

Today, a well-known but unexpected player entered the fray. And did it ever land an important piece.

Mike Reiss, the Globe and Boston.com's prolific NFL writer, is departing to join ESPNBoston, the sports network's second city-specific site as it attempts to strengthen its national brand with a local online presence in the nation's largest and most passionate sports cities. The site will launch Sept. 14, an ESPN spokesman confirmed.

"Adding Boston to ESPN's local-sites network is a natural fit for our goal of serving sports fans," said Jim Pastor, senior vice president for ESPN business divisions. "It is one of the nation's premier sports towns and home to one of the strongest and most passionate fan bases in the world."

Boooooo

Terrible. A shame to see another decent reporter swallowed by the four-letter-network.

Hope they’re paying him a pile.

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead

If he gets a payday

Then it’s well deserved no?

Wow surprising

And so the Globe loses it’s last writer worth reading. And espnboston did a good job of finding a cornerstone writer.

Noooooooooooooooo

Wonderful for Reiss, lousy for us Pats fans losing our own personal team connection. No one covered the Patriots like Mike Reiss. He was all pro — no drama, no need to be part of the story, no sensationalism, just the story.

When Adam Schefter moved to ESPN I thought, good for him. But now if I want to read his blog I have to pay a monthly fee to be an ESPN Insider (which I’m not). I hope ESPN keeps Mike Reiss’s content free. He’s too good to miss on a daily basis.

Keep the faith!

At least they researched the market enough to grab the best.

On a different note, PatsPulpit is the #2 Patriots blog behind Reiss’. If they make you pay to get Mike, this will quickly be #1.

That’s my best stab at the glass half full.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.
