Post-Game Thread - Patriots Over Bills 25-24 in a Nailbiter

Wow.  My heart is still pounding.  What a game, what a finish.  As Brady said to Suzie Kolber as he ran off the field, "That wasn't how we drew it up, but I'll take it."  Amen to that.

The pregame analysis was that the offense would have to carry the team until the Pats defense could solidify and get used to playing as a unit with all the new players and without Richard Seymour.  Tonight it was the defense that had to carry the offense a bit until they could get rocking.

A great team effort by the Patriots and by the Bills.  Have to respect Buffalo after that all-out sixty-minute effort.

Defense and special teams thats fir sure..

Did they come out in a 3-4, 4-3, 4-2-5?.. Burgess play OLB or RE..

2nd!

by whizzkydd on Sep 14, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

3-4 over/under?

they stacked their 3-4 OLBs so close to the line that they were effectively extra linemen. I saw a few times where they would put a fist on the deck, then get a call and stand up, just to repeat it. I wasn’t sure it worked – they didn’t set the edge very well, which meant a lot of the yardage came from screens and outside runs when a tackle would take out the OLB.

yea i don’t get espn either. i had to go to a friends house to watch it. NO way was i missing this game.

i wrote the nfl.com website and asked them why they didn’t broadcast their games live on the internet. Not everyone can afford cable or directv. espn360.com lets you watch limited college games but no nfl games. don’t really make sense to me they should broadcast it live on internet like nbc did of the greenbay/chicago game.

and may even have been a condition of their cable contracts. It’s a cruel, stupid world. Just remember: you don’t matter. Only profit matters.

Give the new guys a chance to work in

Burgess did not do much tonight. Neither did Galloway, or Baker. Give them time to work into the system. As is typical with the Patriots, it is the match ups that provide the opportunities. Tonight, Welker and Moss did their thing. Sammy Morris was quiet, Maroney did well early, Fred Taylor did OK for a while, but as usual, it was the versatile Kevin Faulk who did it all. The combination of Faulk being one of the best pass blocking and pass catching backs really gives Faulk the edge on getting into games where there is a lot of passing like this one. But change the game and you will see others get their chance. Burgess is still learning the defensive schemes and he is mostly a situational pass rusher. Banta-Cain, already knowing the system, has an initial edge over Burgess, and tonight he showed it near the end. But give these things time; they will all get their opportunity to contribute. This is a team game and they play specific people in specific match ups.

Galloway

was covered pretty well, from the looks of it, and Brady only looked downfield at him once, on a ball that sailed out of bounds. Even Randy Moss didn’t get a look at anything beyond mid-range passes; he got a bunch of short routes that would normally be Welker’s bread and butter.

I was kinda surprised when we dumped Thomas.

I guess Watson was showing some hands in camp?

It’s funny (or maybe totally unsurprising). Everyone’s talking about the Wildcat and alternates from the QB position, multiple run-options and all that. Meanwhile, BB is getting rid of our only true fullback, bringing in big, athletic TE’s and going with double H-back sets, TE’s at the FB spot, wings, overloads, heavy sets. And reviving Ben Watson — who once ran down Champ Bailey from the opposite side of the field.

Watson really redeemed himself at the end - TWO TD

All of the receivers had trouble with their hands tonight, but got it together as the game went on. Watson dropped one or two early, but really ran great routes over the middle for his two TD catches in the final five minutes. Glad we kept him; he is still our #1 tight end.

Indeed

and he made a number of fantastic blocks in the first half in the running game. He opened a couple of those holes Maroney squirted through, especially coming off the line and lining up as an H-back inside Matt Light.

Watson's good when he's running vertically

when I think back to a lot of those drops, he’s looking over his shoulder back to the QB and running outside slants or horizontal routes, like that drop he had today. He doesn’t like the idea of being blindsided and looks up for the hit before he gets the ball. Running posts, he’s fine. Don’t know if others would agree, but it finally clicked, because his ability to catch those deep balls is baffling when he drops absolute sitters in flat routes.

won’t be tough if we can get offense going in the first half instead of last five minutes. if tom is throwing like that and the boys are catching it, no way can they pay attention to the run. too many weapons. And watson will tear them up with his spead.

He only lost momentum

when they started calling toss plays and Matt Light got burned around the outside by Bills DEs and OLBs who read the play very, very early. Maroney had a faceful of two or three guys every time; he actually did well to only lose a couple of yards and not get hammered in the process.

Randy Moss's press conference

he chalked the first half (3 qtrs?) of the game up to first game jitters, saying the team just had to settle down and play football.

He said Brady came off the sideline into the huddle with 5.32 min. left and told them that they were going to win the game. And they did.

It was not pretty, but it was effective

The Patriots offense took nearly two quarters to get going at all, and more than three quarters to really start working, though they did exercise a lot of ball control, doing it primarily with the short passing game and the running game.

The Patriots defense was clearly hurt by the Mayo injury, and they bent at times, giving up way too many long runs, but the secondary looked very good, and the defense turned up the pressure and made the difference at the end, along with some excellent special team play.

Typical sloppy first game, but a win is a win. There may be more adjustments needed, and depending on how Jarod Mayo recovers, a move to add linebacker depth, but considering the many new players, it was a good first game. Lots to improve upon, as Brady, Bellichick, and anyone speaking to the media will be sure to tell you. A win is a win, though, and this one was good, showed the sixty minute will to win.

Agreed.

I thought coming in this would be a pushover game for Brady to get back in rhythm, but the Bills really played well against us up till the last few minutes. Had Brady dodging linemen all night, Jackson ran roughshod over us, and Trend Edwards was impressive. Not looking forward to the trip up to Buffalo, to say the least.

Excellent game.

I know moral victories suck, but the Bills were a lot better than I could’ve ever given them credit for. I thought with a new offensive coordinator and that rookie O-line, we’d have pulled out a much easier win.

Before this game I was indifferent to Buffalo

But if they keep playing us like this, I could truly hate them.

Buffalo has attitude. Edwards was impressive. Hating Fred Jackson. They done good.

The East is getting tougher. Whichever team wins the division will be honed by the other three into a devastating weapon. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Compliments to the full-team late game rally.

The pass coverage still needs work. Matt Light needs to work on a lot of things. But the O-Line figured things out more as the game went on (especially with added TE help), the D-Line managed to bring heavy pressure at the end and came up with big plays. The special teams came through with good field position and the big fumble late, and we even managed to stop Jackson a couple of times.

There’s a lot of work to do, but I feel like we figured out a lot of it between halftime and the end of the game.

Be healthy, Mayo.

I only caught the second half because I was in class for the first. From the text updates I got from my Dad and what I saw for most of the second was that this team has a lot of work to do. Again, I’ll take the win as is. I just hope they don’t pull that stunt next week against a revitalized Jets squad.

God is a Patriots fan, and he hates the Buffalo Bills.

Good game, Pats fans. I won’t say that McKelvin gave it to you, because there were some pretty stupid roughing the passer penalties that sustained drives for us. Brady had problems, but how many quarterbacks in the league are even capable of going 39-53 for 378 yards? I doubt Edwards could put up something like that for us.

You guys should expect an extra warm welcome in Orchard Park later this year. Hope you don’t think the division is going to be a cakewalk anymore.

No AFC East team

is either going to walk all over everyone or be walked all over by any other division rival this year, that’s for certain. Makes it more interesting (in theory or in hindsight anyway). Makes for heart-stopping nail-biters during the season.

Keep the faith!

What I like about it is that each Division needs to send its best team

When you’re in a weak division (AFC or NFC West) then your best might not be good enough (Chargers, Cardinals). The Patriots won super bowls when the rest of our division was stronger. Trial by fire, baby. Trial by fire.

If the Pats don’t win the division, then whoever does needs to light it up and win the Lombardi for the division. You beat us fair and square, then finish the deal.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

my thoughts

I felt that we offensively looked okay but dropped passes and stuffed runs stalled our drives whenever we got close to scoring…i wish Brady had thrown at least one true deep ball though….linebackers looked slow, specially after Mayo left…our oline pass protected pretty well but run blocking left a bit to be desired…secondary seemed to shut down two good receivers…I am impressed with the Bills, and am glad I am not a Bills fan this morning…After last season I feel the Pats were owed a bit of karma though

I am hoping that our struggles yesterday will translate into intense practice this week so that we don’t look so rusty in the first half.

Game Speed

The guys finally found “GAME” gear. The first half they looked like they were in “PRACTICE” gear.

Bill will kick their stickshifts before next game.

I think it’s safe to say you guys are the team to beat in the AFC East (no one really thinks the Dolphins are). Who would you guys think the main challenger to the division crown?

From a Bills standpoint, I think that whoever we continue to play is going to get hammered if they don’t bring their A-game. It was obvious from last night’s game that our O-line can indeed play. I and a few other Bills fans were just waiting for this game to demonstrate that, and they did indeed. We finally have a center who doesn’t employ the Prison b**** technique, our guards don’t pass block like a turnstile, and our LT wasn’t half bad. Eric Wood (our rookie right guard) in particular, had a couple of outstanding blocks on the screens to Fred Jackson that were called.

I respectfully submit that if we can play you guys 25-24 in Gillete, in a game where we really should have beaten you, this might be a better Bills season than many expected. That is the flavor of the Kool-Aid we prefer, at least. :) Honestly, it doesn’t seem likely that many teams are going to be able to do this to you — to have you guys all but beaten in your home stadium.

Oh for the early 90s and the Patriots teams of Dick MacPherson, and the feared aerial assault of Marc Wilson. :)

For both teams? I’ll take that. If you just mean the Patriots, that just goes to coaching. As much as I’m not crazy about Jauron, he somehow had his team ready to play in that first half. I guess I can see the rust issue. Brady sure lit it up in preseason pretty well, though.

well i think your team was fine

we had some trouble with the 4-3, and brady was overthrowing and underthrowing passes, and our receivers couldn’t catch early. it stinks, as a bills fan, to have T.O only have two catches, and i don’t know how much evans has.
use the game as motivation if you want, but i wouldn’t judge it on this game due to brady settling in and all.
Good Luck against Tampa! Hope parrish does well. he’s my favorite bill. :)

The Tampa Bay game should be interesting. I’m not writing them off, but giving up 34 points encourages me, even if it is to Dallas. The New York – NE game, of course, will be one I watch. I’m not yet sure who I’d rather win this one, but whatever happens, I’ll be rooting for your defense against NY’s offense. I think we can agree that a resurgent NY Jets team led by a quarterback who can actually get the job done is not in the best interests of either Buffalo or New England. Crush his spirit while he’s young!

I think the division is a long way from won.

The Bills just stood up and punched us in the face. The Dolphins slammed us last year, and they’re far from done.
The Jets looked good in game one, and we’ll see them this week.

We just made it through round one of a 16 round fight. The Bills did well. Actually, they played us very well the last regular season game last year. If they can keep up that attitude, half your battles are over.

I don’t know yet who will win the division, or who the #2 team is. We haven’t had everyones best shot yet. Keep swinging.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

Well said. It is true, we don’t know what anyone’s best (or worst) shot is yet.
