Mayo out 6-8 Weeks....

I just read a report that Mayo will be out 6-8 weeks with an MCL sprain. They said a grade 3 which is the worst possible sprain.. Do u all think that the Pats should put him on IR for the first half of the yr or not? With the possiblility of signing someone that can help in the mean time.. Who do u think they should sign? It will be also interesting how the defense will handle his loss at the current time..

Came from Rotoworld.

But its been reported on there, Citing 2 sources from the Boston Globe.. But also profootball tonight is stating it too.. This is going to be an interesting decision to make on defense.. Thats for sure..

put him on ir.

don’t want to have another injured mayo next year. i think guyton will be good. or we should pick up that Lb we cut. damn can’t remember his name! starts with a P.

by patriotguy on Sep 15, 2009 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

If he is put on IR he is gone for the season- considering the injury should keep him out of action for 6 weeks it makes no sense to do that. Can you put someone on the PUP list after the season has begun?
The reporter who broke the story is Chris Gasper. He is mildly retarded so maybe he messed up the report. I’ve yet to see Mike Reiss say the same thing or the patriots so i’ll just wait and see

Nope. It has to be before training camp starts. Players can be taken off before the season starts, though. If they’re not activated before the roster is cut to 53, then they have to sit the first six games.

Those reports are not verified, on which grade it is.

Belichick thinks he'll come back
“I don’t think that’s what it is,” New England coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday when asked if he could rule out Mayo’s injury being season-ending.

From ESPN

"These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

True...

But u know how BB is about injuries and letting the press know.. We probably wont hear the whole true till next yr.. Like we heard about Maroney this yr after last yrs injury..

by whizzkydd on Sep 15, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Not the whole truth

but usually nothing but the truth. If he says he doesn’t think it’s season-ending, it’s probably not seasonending.

No IR

He will miss 4-8 games. The bye will fit in there somewhere. And the report I read said a source says it’s not that bad. Maybe he will miss as few as 4 games. No way you IR him if he can play 8 games in the second half and the playoffs.

Warm up the Duck Boats!!!

true..

but if it is that serious i wouldnt want to press my star LB back into the lineup quickly thats for sure..

I think

when they say 6-8 weeks they mean fully recovered. Otherwise they would say, 8-10 weeks, etc.

4-8 games isn't that long

Merriman had (I think) 6 weeks suspension for doping, and still made the Pro Bowl. Mayo is a tackling machine and he knows the system well enough for them to give him the green dot. Add in the fact that the Pats are bound to be gunning for a 20+ week season, not just the regular season, there’s no chance they’ll IR him. Were I to guess, they’ll grandfather him until he’s better (hopefully very soon), intending him to be 100% for playoffs and ready for a crack at the Big One.

4-8 isn't bad, no IR but need depth

I don’t think you put him on IR considering the Pats are playing for a 4+ month season – we’re talking about him being out half the year.

Though it is a knee and there’s no telling how effective he’ll be upon returning anyway – they need to go sign depth.

Even before he was hurt we all knew LB was thin. Now that the best backer is out for an extended time – you’ve got to make a move.

Couple ideas – what about seeing if old friend Willie McGinest would come back for an incentive based contract. Thomas could slide back inside (though I prefer him outside he can man the middle) and you get a bit of protection with minimal cost.

I don’t mind Derrick Brooks – but there is a reason why 30 teams have passed on him to this point, and it’s not just because he plays in a Tampa 2

No way you put him on IR

He will probably be out 6 weeks Max, then you have to take into account the bi-week and you also have to assume that another LB will be hurt during the year meaning that we will need more LBs. A 80% Mayo is better than no LBs at all…

Now what's more likely?

Seau gets off the surfboard, Rosey Colvin gets off the couch, or Bruschi bolts from the halftime desk?

Guyton steps up and matures wicked quick

Bet he spent his day off watching film and studying up on recognizing those screens. Banta-Cain, Burgess & the rest of the crew all have an epiphany and play like they’ve never played before.

The above seems more likely than relying on “the replacements” (regardless of how much i love those guys) to get the job done.

AT

I’m wondering if Adalius Thomas moves inside and we stick with a 4-3.

4-3

Mike Reiss noted that as soon as Mayo went down the Patriots switched exclusively to a four-man line the rest of the game. That could be the plan against the Jets too.

Looks like it could be Brooks

Sportscenter is just reporting that the Pats are interested in signing Derrick Brooks

Maybe from a leadership standpoint

But Guyton has the sideline to sideline range. This may be one of those time when leaders emerge. We’ll see in NY.

I love Guyton

He’s athletic and definitely has all the skills, but I got the impression that he was just a step behind in recognizing what the Bills were going to do.

Keep the faith!

Without Mayo monopolizing the film room

I think Guyton will bone up. :-)

The benefit of a week

The Pats had still been practicing a 3-4 until then, and he would’ve thought he’d be the backup when they were running a 4-3. So a week of running the defence from MLB would’ve done him wonders, if only in confidence.

wtf

Wikipedia is saying that Brooks is on the pats at the moment.

Then again, it’s wikipedia, lol.

Hah, I noticed something even more surprising there last week.

When I was looking to see who the new TE was, I noticed an interesting roster addition at QB – Wiki was listing a certain 12 at starting QB. Some guy by the name John Elway. It changed pretty quickly, though.

off topic

i watched 3 games to glory III last night and matt light was referred to by the announcers as todd light

Wonder if my theory held up there, too

was he being called Todd when he missed blocks, and Matt when he made them?
