Report: Dolphins' Pennington out for year

According to ESPN.com (citing insider sources), Chad Pennington has suffered a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and is expected to miss the rest of the 2009 NFL season:

Star-divide

This is a significant development in the race for the AFC East title, as New England still faces Miami twice and will need to adjust their defensive preparations for the new QB situation on the Dolphins' team.  Will we see Miami run the wildcat offense more frequently now, or will Chad Henne step in and work from the same playbook as Pennington?

On the personal side, this is Pennington's third major injury, and there's some speculation he may hang up the cleats.  Always a shame to see a competitor have to bow out earlier than they want and not on their own terms, especially a guy who has been as hard a worker as he was.  Even as the quarterback for two long-standing division rivals, he's been a classy guy who is tough to hate.

We said the same thing at the Beatdown. Chad’s a good dude. He’s had a tough go of it. I hope he gets healthy and finds a home for 4-5 more years. That dumps Miami from the playoff picture. Ya know, I used to root slightly for the Jets simply because of your overwhelming success. But, with wind bag Ryan running his mouth every other day (and going prevent against you as a Ravens D-Cood.) I’ve recanted those feelings.

Hmm. Bit of both, I'd imagine

They’ll Wildcat against the teams that are susceptible. Henne is seen as the QB of the future anyway; ‘future’ just means next week instead of next year, now. And White will be a solid backup in the Mike Vick mould – has second round talent, but not clear how well it’ll convert to the NFL because of the other issues (size, temperament).

To be fair, though, Miami are a rushing team – two very solid RBs, a decent O-line, and a scrambling QB. They weren’t exactly going to win games with their WR battery as it was, and their top WR wasn’t a fit for Pennington anyway, as he was a quick deep-threat and Pennington was a dip-and-dabble 10 yard thrower.

At best, they’ll adjust. At worst, they’ll temper their QBs to make another run next year.

Shame

I always liked Pennington, so it is sort of sad to see him out again. Still, it must be admitted that staying healthy has always been his major problem and a player cannot be truly great without that ability.

For Miami this is actually a good thing. Sitting at 0-3 with a waaay tougher schedule than last year the season was lost anyway. Now they can use the rest of the way to develop their next quarterback without having to create controversy by benching Pennington at some point.

Not in this conference, anyway

Maybe the Chargers could recover from 0-3 or something.

Still, you have to feel for the guy. He has a fantastic record or two for accuracy, but got pounded behind iffy O-lines and then got thrown around a few NFL franchises through no particular fault of his own. Hopefully this isn’t a career-killer and he gets another NFL comeback player of the year award in 2010. ‘06, ’08 and ’10 would be pretty impressive. It won’t be at the Dolphins, though.

Don't know what's the matter with me

but I’ve always liked Pennington too, regardless that he plays for an AFC East rival team. Ah, what the heck, he’s a good guy and he handled the Jets’ dumping him for Favre like a professional. Tough, tough break for him (I couldn’t care less about the Dolphins.)

Keep the faith!

I was rooting for Pennington to do well last year

After he got yanked around by the Favre clown. Unfortunately, he did too well. The Dolphins already told him this was his last year at the wheel, so he would either be a clipboard holder or go elsewhere. I’m sorry he’s going to miss this year in the limelight. I hope he finds a new home in the league; there are much worse QB’s out there on rosters.

In an unrelated story (yeah, right):

Chiefs trade Tyler Thigpen to the Dolphins for an undisclosed draft pick.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

'Phins take Thigpen? What?!

I don’t get this move at all.

They’ve been touting Henne as the QB of the future for… two years? They’ve got White as their option QB/Wildcat guy. So that’s two. What do they expect to do with Thigpen? He doesn’t know the system, but he’s an ex-starter, so surely they aren’t expecting him to be a third-string emergency QB. So either he’s the starter (which shows no confidence in Henne at all) or he’s the backup (and thus relegates the White-Wildcat experiment a failure already, since they can only use the emergency QB in certain circumstances).

Thoughts?

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 29, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Henne starts, of course

Thigpen probably is tagged 3rd string initially, but I think he’ll be holding the clipboard by at least game 2.
White is Wildcat only period, and he isn’t doing that very well.

If Henne struggles after a couple games, they may test the wheels on Thiggers (aka Bones). They need the rest of this season to figure out the QB of the future. Bones has more starting experience than the other 2 QBs combined.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Sep 29, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what I figured

but maaaaaaaan Henne will be pissed. Imagine being told you’re the QB of the future, you finally get your chance when the starter goes down… and your team trades for a guy who has more experience than you.

He and Kellen Clemens should start a support group. Lots of hugging and Brett Favre-effigy burning (Pennington’s only in the ’Phins because of Favre, after all).

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 29, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Hah!

Add in Tavares Jackson to that support group. Man. There’d be a few around now. I wonder if they actually talk to each other about it? “So, you got screwed over by your organisation because of Brett Favre, too?”

Save a spot in the club for Sage "helicoptor" Rosenfels

Brad “I-was-lying” Childress told Rosenfels the Vikes always wanted him to be their number one guy. Boo-hoo.

Keep the faith!

There's a little group of them, somewhere, sitting around a circular table

adding up their collected NFL-backup-QB-salaries and asking “so, anyone know what a hitman actually costs?”

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 29, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it'd have to be a hit

because if you just screwed up his throwing arm, he’d keep playing to keep his consecutive start streak going.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Sep 29, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Although, if they did it themselves

at least you know Favre couldn’t shoot back. Or, if he did, he couldn’t hit anything.

I was thinking of Garcia yesterday when I saw Chad was out for the year

…and in fact the Eagles released Garcia today. But, no, it’s Thigpen. Strange, because they already have young (and relatively inexperienced) QBs at Miami; woulda thought they’d go for Garcia.

May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

by juperee on Sep 29, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

And you'd think a young guy would learn a lot having TWO experienced QBs in camp

Pennington knew he was on a one-season gig, and Garcia might come with the promise of a shot at a starting role. I’d imagine they’ve have a LOT of knowledge to pass onto a young guy, if they didn’t want to give Henne the starts this year. Unless they want a young QB to be trade-bait at some point in future; I’m not sure they’ll get any value from trading Pennington next year (not sure whether he has a contract until then).

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 29, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

As predicted, Garcia just got cut from the Eagles

Wonder if Thigpen suddenly doesn’t look so good? Heh.

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 29, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Poor Garcia is in that sad stage of his career- the lonely one man barnstormer living check to check. The poor guy only wanted a 2nd career. Like Flutie, he was good enough to stick around but just not as tempting as a less qualified rookie. I wanted Flutie for the Ravens back in ’98. He would have been an upgrade for the next 6 years.

by raven on Sep 29, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

He's more impressive than a few starters around the league

Would Garcia make the Bucs, the Browns, the Titans, the Rams or even the Lions better (although sticking with a rookie makes a certain amount of sense)? Probably.

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 30, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

not that I disagree

But he’s already worn the colors of 3 of those 5!

by jctsai12 on Sep 30, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha, that thought did occur to me

And it just shows he’s a giant scapegoat for other people. He makes a team better than it has right to expect, gets blamed for an inevitably poor season, gets cut or traded, and that team actually gets worse. Poor guy.

by Comedic.Sans on Sep 30, 2009 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

He was fine on the Bucs

But the Bucs had other major issues. If they are “rebuilding”, then they might as well start grooming some young stud QB.

Garcia would help a team that is a contender except for that one spot. Unfortunately, there aren’t alot of those jobs available.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

by SlotMachinePlayer on Sep 30, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Sad really. I think the age envelope is getting pushed further and further up by some great players- Warner, Favre, Fred Taylor, Ray Lewis, Derrick Mason, Willie Anderson (retired), Trevor Price. All these guys are maintaining a high level in their last few years or year.

In this player juggling league, I think coaches need to take another look at vets over rookies. I’ve always said that I’d take a good vet qb over a costly top 25 draft qb. You would get immediate returns and have the track record to go by. The Ravens farted around with Boller while many decent veteran Qb’s looked for work including Warner, Garcia, Collins and Brunell.
