New England Patriots First Cuts....
Mike Reiss said that along with Walter being cut.. Billy Yates, Roderick Rogers, Steve Williams, Vinny Ciurciu, and Robert Ortiz was included. Im a bit shocked about Yates, and Williams. Yates has been a decient backup on the OLine and from reports. Second yr Williams was having a good preseason.. Sad to see both go figured one would make it to the team.. I can understand Yates with all the talent on the OLine from the incoming rookies.. But i was still hoping he would make it. I figured Ortiz would not being the talent at WR, Rogers well i did not think he would with McGowan and well the other safeties are good.. Can only spot 4 or 5 for that position anyways i guess, and Ciurciu well i had not heard much about him doing anything in the preseason. Anyone know if he did well or is the another talent think at LB or he was not worth keeping? What u all think of the first string of cuts?

Billy Yates
was often praised by Bill Belichick so I thought that he might make the team’s depth chart. I remember linking to an article last year where Belichick singled out Yates for his performance, and Yates earned a starting spot due to injuries on the line. Unfortunately the article was from the Herald, which charges for archived articles so I can’t link to it here.
Rogers, Williams, Ciurciu and Ortiz were “Jags” and I wouldn’t take them on the roster at the expense of some of the higher quality players the Patriots are fortunate enough to choose from.
Keep the faith!
I recall...
Yates being pretty good on screen passes and such. He did a good job of moving to the second level of the defense and making some nice blocks, but other than that he was hit or miss (usually the latter).

Slightly edited title for search engine optimization. Nice find…

Did not look at it that way when i wrote it.. LOL
Just put it together off the top of my head.. But its true Billy Yates was a good back up. Sad to see him go..
The thing about backups
is they should either be new players that your developing, or previously starting veterans that you are looking to replace eventually. BACKUP → STARTER → BACKUP → CUT. If all you end up being is a backup, then you’ve skipped a step toward being cut.
The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

That's what I'm here for - to worry about SEO and aggregration ;-)

I understand..
Was just taught to always give respect to the one that wrote the article so i came just as second nature. Will be sad to see Mike leave the globe.
true but was hoping he would make that step forward...
Kinda like Jarvis Green.. A backup but a good one that could be a starter else where. But when called on he comes in and gets the job done.
Brian Hoyer
I know I have been doggin Brian Hoyer, like I said I live in Michigan, so I have seen him play quite a bit, but he actually must be showing Bill and the staff that he has somethin, including his performance on Thursday. I think getting rid of walter means we are going to pick up a backup that we are targeting from another team. I can’t undestand it? Can you guys?
It may be now..it may be later...later aint gonna be no use! Am I right Al? We got alot of angry guys in their black panthers, muslims, young lords, besides you average anti-socials. We gotta go in, am I right, clean their clocks!
It has precedent
Brady was a 7th rounder who was fourth on the depth chart going into camp, who got promoted into the #2 slot after a strong pre-season. Shades of that, perhaps?
After the 5th, does anyone keep count? Haha.
Those picks are candy to Belichick.
I saw Hoyer playing the whole game ...
as a sign Walter was done for the Pats. He moved the ball well and no INTs. They will be looking to see who for QB’s will be available without trading anymore draft picks, then if that doesn’t net a #2 QB, they will try to trade for AJ Feeley with the Iggles. See if Alex Smith will be enough for the trade. I see him as #4 in the depth chart for TE.
Was surprised about Yates, he helped BJGE through for a TD, but that shows BB wants to keep Ohrnberger on the roster. Not sure Bussey makes it though, even if BB does have a pet name for him already. :)
Yates
Didn’t surprise me much. He’s aging and beyond any real hope of improving. He’s battling it out with younger players who do have a chance of improving, and the other players of his ilk resigned contracts with the Pats – Kazcur, Britt. That was an indication to me that he was to be the odd man out.
Pats may even re-sign him at some point
if injuries warrant it and he’s still available.
Keep the faith!
Especially if BB offers him a nice (future) ring to be faithful
It could also turn on who of the rookies make it onto the roster versus the practice squad. And that’d probably depend on what other clubs are looking for backup rookie O-linesmen. So it’s all contingent on things arranging themselves in future, depending on who ELSE gets cut elsewhere.
Not a Pats cut but......

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.
