New England Patriots Cuts: Lenon, Ventrone, Nunn, Richard, Love, Thomas, Smith
It's that time of year when NFL teams must inform the unlucky that they've cut them from the final 53 man roster. So far today, Mike Reiss's blog has listed the following:
- TE Alex Smith - Looks like Benjamin Watson and Chris Baker, and traded with Giants for Michael Mitchell at TE.
- TE David Thomas - traded to the Saints for a 2011 draft pick.
- DB Jamar Love
- LB Paris Lenon - Possibly beat out by LB Eric Alexander for a spot.
- WR/S Ray Ventrone - Ray has found a spot since 2005. Not today, unfortunately.
- WR Terrence Nunn - The Patriots appear stacked at WR and Terrence is last on the depth chart. However, he did do some good things this past Thursday against the Giants.
- DL Darryl Richard - 7th round choice, the Patriots are pretty deep at defensive line.
Nothing's official until 6pm tonight, boys and girls. Some of the above could come back on the practice squad, but would have to clear waivers (not picked up by another team).

Jamar Love
Chris Price is reporting that Jamar Love was informed of his release as well. Not too surprising, but he also goes on to mention that Eric Alexander is in.
Pryor made the roster, as well.
Not that there was much drama, but I was just able to confirm via a league source that rookie defensive lineman Myron Pryor is going to make the final 53-man roster. Pryor, a 6-foot, 319-pound defensive tackle out of Kentucky, was the 207th overall pick in the draft. A four-year starter for the Wildcats, he was a second-team All-SEC and made 34 career starts as a collegian.
More news coming in from Schefter's Twitter
- At least one Pats trade at tight end — David Thomas goes to New Orleans for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick .
- More trade activity: New York Giants traded tight end Michael Matthews to the Patriots for a conditional 2011 draft pick.
- Indications now are that the Patriots also have released TE Alex Smith, which must mean that Ben Watson has made the final 53-man roster.
Heads up play, NESilver
Props for catching these. Story updated.

No problem.
Apparently, the trade for David Thomas netted us a 7th rounder.
Patriots release 10. Place 3 on IR and make 2 trades involving tight ends.
I’m having trouble remembering the 3 on IR, but I recall reading that Bussey is on the list for the year.
Here we go... Patriots Twitter again.
Patriots place 3 on IR: Rookie OL George Bussey (knee), LB Shawn Crable (groin) and RB Chris Taylor (shoulder) will miss the 2009 season.
Shame about Crable. I keep hoping I’ll get to see the guy play during the regular season, but he just can’t shake the injury bug.
Reiss's twitter
Patriots now confirming that they’ve traded a TE, acquired a TE and released a TE. Details to come.
Who else but the Pats would say something like that :D
Gotta run out for a bit, but will be back to analyze final cuts/roster

surprised
thought he was listed at wide receiver for some reason – never even occurred to me that he was a safety. One of those strange mental blank spots I guess. This must mean his injury isn’t season-threatening.
Keep the faith!
Makes sense
I don’t know if he was ever “officially” listed as a wide receiver, but he did work there on numerous occasions last year during training camp (and I believe he saw a few snaps there during the regular season, too).
This year he worked exclusively at safety, so that’s the reason for the switch. He reminds me a bit of Ventrone with his versatility.
The Patriots have him as WR on their site
Doesn’t matter, he plays on Special Teams mostly, and rotates in at Safety.
The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

What do we know about that Michael Matthews guy?
His yahoo bio says he’s a big kid – 6’4, 270lbs, and doesn’t have many receptions, all of which screams “blocker” to me. If so, I guess that’s an indication of faith in Baker/Watson, a sign they aren’t using TEs heavily as catchers, or both.

Fullback?
Another thought – both Thomas and Smith had been playing as FB and shift-TE. Gap in roster? Can the new guy run in there? He seems to have the beef necessary to shift LBs and even linemen.

Again not a Pats cut but.....

Though with Pioli in charge I’m surprised he wasn’t drawn and quartered.
(yes I’m in a bad mood today, why do you ask?)
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

leave the 3rd rounder, take the cannoli
Not a good year for 3rd round picks for the pats, yikes:
‘08 3rd rounder – cut (O’connell)
’07 3rd rounder – Crable (IR…again)
’06 3rd rounder – Thomas (traded)
Yokes – might as well just trade the pick next year and save the devaluation of it.
I’m a bit surprised by Thomas, I guess this really speaks to how complete Baker is and Watson must still be good enough. Thomas was an outstanding reciever but that’s about it. Watson hopefully got the message this pre-season that he needs to step it up.
Watson is a smart player, terrific blocker, good character, knows the system-- great in every way except...
the stone hands baby, the stone hands.
Keep the faith!
