Disappointing

When I shut the computer off last night I was feeling pretty good. But that was WITH Seymour on the team. I don’t really care if it’s for a first-round pick

Keep the faith!

haha you could say that i was shocked. does kraft know that there might BE a cap next year vs what we’ve heard about most likely no cap. i dont think we’d trade him away like this unless that happened. looks like wilfork is gettin paid though!

by the way i hate the 150 word limit where on breaking news you likely have only a few words to say. (then u end up with a post like this)

I don't get this

I mean sure you get value for him vs cutting him – but this is getting to be too much to take on the D side of the ball. Seymour, Vrabel, Bruschi & Harrison all gone over the course of 1 season?

I’m guessing there was enough talent seen on the squad to let Seymour go and not suffer too much, but man, I would be lying if I said seeing him and Vrabel be trading didn’t sting on the emotional side of things.

And talk about thanks for nothing – they ship him to the damn Raiders? Richard is going to be supremely PO’d at this one!

by JonnyNYC on Sep 6, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

Don’t forget about hobbs and o’neal (granted, they weren’t good, but they were still starters)

I think there’s two main factors behind this decision:
1) They’re gonna pay Wilfork or Bodden big money next year.
2) They’re going to play 4-3 a lot more this year, and as a pure pass rusher, Seymour is replaceable, likely by Burgess.

by jmm1776 on Sep 6, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

WOW, im shocked. At leased were getting good value.

by NESPORTS on Sep 6, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

obviously he was getting older and we were not likely to resign him BUT he was still a huge part of the line!
yes we are getting great value for a 1 year player…but come on I was just shocked!

by bforce3 on Sep 6, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

what im wondering about is we currently have a 52 man roster…who will be replacing his spot? any guesses?

by bforce3 on Sep 6, 2009 11:15 AM EDT reply actions

Do the Pats go QB here?

That’s my first thought. It’s hard to imagine BB only going with 2 for the season.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Sep 6, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

if brady and hoyer get hurt our season is over anyways. it seems wasteful to carry 3 as long as you have 2 capable players. but i also wouldnt know who else we’d need to get.

Maybe Bill saw something he really liked in Pryor and Brace. Thought he could get the very most out of Seymour, even if it wasn’t on the field.

by NESPORTS on Sep 6, 2009 11:18 AM EDT reply actions

According to ESPN
In a corresponding move, the Patriots reached agreement Sunday with free-agent guard Kendall Simmons, a source close to the player told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Simmons will fill the roster spot vacated by Seymour.

A former first-round pick of the Steelers, Simmons started some in Pittsburgh last season and worked out for New England last week.

Kendall is expected to sign later Sunday.

2011 first rounder? hmm

I like it. Anything that costs the Pats seriously and can’t help them for at least two years it fine by me. Maybe by then Al Davis will have died and the Raiders will be respectable making the pick not so awesome.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 6, 2009 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

That's what I was thinking

But I learned long ago not to get my hopes up whenever the Pats do something that seems to hurt them, as it usually ends up doing just the opposite! A prime example would be the Randy Moss trade in ’07.

Still thinking way inside the box I see.

They could trade the pick tomorrow. Just stop by whenever you need an insight on how the NFL works. I’ll be glad to help.

And, it didn’t cost them much: a 30 year old guy who has missed 9 games the last two years that has one year left on his contract and hasn’t made all-pro in three years isn’t giving up much for a likely top 5 pick. They are loaded on the D-line anyway.

Hi guys

I’ve been lurking a while on this blog, but at this news I feel it’s time to join the community.

Does anybody else get the feeling this is signifying a move to the 4-3? Obviously it’s so they can resign Mankins and Wilfork next season and get compensation for Seymour, but honestly a move to 4-3 could be in the plan. The drafting of 3 tackles, trading for Burgess, trading Vrabel away, Seymour away, losing Bruschi, Crable and Mackenzie all seem to indicate a too-thin LB corps and a change.

Just a thought.

by A Guy on Sep 6, 2009 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

Welcome!

Yeah, the 4-3 is definitely a possibility and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I thought they would morph from 4-3 to 3-4 depending on the opponent (they still might), but all of the moves recently look like a 4-3 style is in their plans. Should be interesting to see how the defense plays out this year.

by NESilver on Sep 6, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Welcome Guy.

I don’t think 4-3 is the long-term plan.

They will NOT sign Wilfork for big money. Either he gives the discount or they will franchise him. Then, they might trade him. They expended a 2nd rounder for Brace to replace him. He will see action in the 4-3 this year and backup Wilfork in the 3-4. If he progresses as well as expected Wilfork is gone.

by BabeParilli on Sep 6, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm actually kind of a fan of the move.

We probably weren’t going to sign him AND Wilfork.

He’s at probably the height of his value, but entering what are usually years of decline.

A likely high first rounder is nothing to sneeze at. Shortsighted teams will say that 2011 picks are worth less than 2010, but the Pats aren’t trying to sneak in to a tiny window where they can win.

We’re taking a risk on defense this year, no doubt, but given that almost everyone on the squad was either old, injured, or almost a free agent last year, it looks like the Pats are really on the verge of completely revamping it into a young and talented group within a year or two.

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 6, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

agreed. Sure he was a rock, but our defense was getting scary old/injured. I’m happy we are revamping the defense while we have an offense that can still outscore the other team.

Our defense might not be tops in the league, or even top 10 but the Brady-Moss tandem is nye unstoppable at times.

In Kobe we trust!

by robi s on Sep 8, 2009 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree and am more exited about the trade now. Although I really wanted to get Taylor Mays next year.

by NESPORTS on Sep 6, 2009 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

I was really stunned by this move, as I believed that Seymour was the last person to ever be traded away. Given the situation with Wilfork, though, if we were to keep both for this season, it would’ve been a pretty messy situation we’d be dealing with heading into the offsesaon.

I just hope with Seymour gone that Brace really steps up.

Beer is good! And stuff!

I am on the fence though i’m leaning towards good move. We wouldn’t have resigned him and ended up getting a top ten pick (yes I am willing to predict the raiders suck in two years). The only thing I wish is that the pick was this year because there seams to be a lot of great defensive players at the top of this years draft. But who knows, next years might be better.

by BayDuck on Sep 6, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Some of you

are pulling my leg, right? You’re not really thinking this was anything other than highway robbery of the senile Al Davis, right?

We get a possible top 5 to top 10 pick in 2011, for a 30 year old, one year left, hasn’t lived up to the big contract he held out for, injury prone, greedy bastard. That deal my friends, is what they call a “no-brainer”.

I’m glad he is gone. I like players who want to be a Patriot and are willing to put some money where their mouth is. These types are sprinkled all over the roster. Seymour wasn’t one of them by a long shot.

maybe the Pats can shift Matthew Slater to the Raiders for Nnamdi Asomugha. C’mon, senile old maaaan. Slater’s fast, promise.

Asante who? I was pretty bummed when we lost Samuels, but acquiring Namdi would be AMAZZZINGGGG.

Never say never! If im nnamdi i have a crappy season like Moss, so that Davis will trade me ot the pats!

but nnamdi just signed a new contract…and he’d make more money than tom brady. i dont see that happening. (on the patriots)
