pats make strong move
The trading of Richard Seymour to Oakland allows the Pats to continue being the premier franchise in the NFL for years to come. A first round draft pick for an aging, often hurt player. Not bad. His contract is up at the end of the year and we weren't going to resign him anyway. If he played for us this year and got hurt, or played poorly, his market value would have dropped off the charts. Now we can sign Wilfork. I can't believe Oakland gave up a first rounder. We go to the 4-3 and win the super bowl anyway.

Not just a first rounder
but a probably very very low one, which Belichick will probably trade for even more draft picks.
I feel bad for Richard but I think it will pay off long term for the rest of the team

It seems to me
that Seymour made his own bed with that holdout and getting injured every other year. If the Pats were to re-sign him this year, or after his contract expires, they couldn’t do anything but remember his behaviour at the end of his rookie contract. Unless they were wanting a reprise of that Julius Peppers ugliness in Carolina, they probably decided to cut their losses early, and to get value out of NE having his rights, they had to shift him out now. A first rounder (and a high one) is an excellent tradeoff to avoid contract extension disputes. Now signing him past 2009 is the Raider’s problem. Skeletor might threaten to eat his brain as part of the negotiations.

Hard but good decision
It sucks as a fan to watch the core pieces of the champion teams fade away or be parceled off each year, but it’s been happening for a while unfortunately and there is just no loyalty in sports anymore – by players or by teams. That’s what makes Troy Brown and Teddy Bruschi so cool – though both of them had moments when they almost left the team as well.
From a good decision standpoint, it’s amazing to me that the Pats can draft a player with the 6th pick in the draft, have him be a significant contributor on 3 super bowl teams, then trade him 8 years later for a pick that very well could be equal value.
It’s a no brainer to do this deal when you look at it that way, sucks for Richard that he’s stuck in Oakland for a year. But I guess that will motivate him to play well so he gets paid to be somewhere else.
PS – he seems like a guy who’s going to want to hurt the Pats now, I see him signing with Indy, San Diego, Baltimore, somewhere like that.

you forgot the Jets and Dolphins
He’ll be at least one year removed if he does end up on one of those teams or somewhere in the AFC East.
Keep the faith!
