It's a ring thing - Which active New England Patriots have hardware?

via farm3.static.flickr.com

The departure of Patriots icons Richard Seymour, Tedy Bruschi, and Rodney Harrison got me thinking about hardware.  I'm not talking screwdrivers and hammers.  I'm talking Super Bowl rings.  The list seems to get shorter and shorter every season.  So here we go.

Player Year Acquired Rings
Tom Brady 6th, 2000 3
Matt Light 2nd, 2001 3
Stephen Neal FA, 2001 3
Kevin Faulk 2nd, 1999 3
Jarvis Green 4th, 2002 2
Dan Koppen 5th, 2003 2
Ty Warren 1st, 2003 2
*Tully Banta-Cain FA, 2009 2
Benjamin Watson 1st, 04 1
Vince Wilfork 1st, 04 1

*Tully Banta-Cain returns to us after a 2 year stint with San Francisco.

It's about what I expected

because only the long-term Pats would have them, and the veteran free agents the Pats pick up are actively seeking rings to the point of taking the Pats-paycheck-discount.

I was thinking about this today when I read that the “nucleus” of the super bowl defenses is gone. I think pretty much the whole damn this is.

Initially I would have thought Wilfork was there for the last two.

The new guy, Michael Matthews

has a ring for his season with the Giants. Yes. He was a starter in that game.

Looking at

Neal’s career it shows him as having 2002 be his first year. So how he get 3 rings?

Warm up the Duck Boats!!!

He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2001.

But apparently he didn’t play that year. I guess he gets a ring by association, maybe like Edge getting one via the Colts?

The Pats site says...

“2001… Signed to the Patriots active roster (12/12) … Listed among the Patriots day of game inactives for the final three games of the regular season and all three postseason games, including Super Bowl XXXVI.”

He was waived by the Pats, signed by the Eagles to their practice squad, and stolen back by the Pats

So he had to be listed as an active player, but on the game day inactives. I guess he was on the roster of 53, but never made the travelling 45.
