Quick Recap: Ravens defeat Patriots, 33-14

Are we suprised?  I mean, really?  This game was a perfect reflection of the entire season: up, down, and sideways.  Tom Brady hot, Tom Brady cold.  I have to hand it to the Ravens; they came into our house and played physical, tough football.  Smashmouth was the name of the game and it worked.  They were able to take advantage of a number of gaffs and tipped balls to put this game out of reach.  Our Patriots just didn't have the muscle to overcome it.

If I were Harbaugh, the game ball would go to Ray Lewis.  The guy does his homework and knows the tendencies of the teams he plays.  The delayed blitzes of Baltimore killed us, I mean absolutely destroyed us in the first half.  When we started using a hurry up offense, it was just too late.  We never unbalanced the Ravens' D.  Harbaugh knew his secondary was crap so he concentrated on pressuring Brady.  And it worked.  Our offensive line was overwhelmed.

The one shining outcome to this entire game was Julian Edelman.  He's making a serious play for a starting position, for Hoodie to consider an offense that can include both Edelman and Wes Welker.  That is, if Welker comes back in 2010.  If not, he'll just be better than this year.

More analysis in the coming days, but this was a bummer to see them get this far and drop it.  Brady with rust, gaffs on Joey Galloway and Greg Lewis, and Wes Welker's injury were all parts of the puzzle, but the bottom line is they just didn't play liked they wanted this.

Congrats to the Baltimore Ravens with a very dominant win.  They deserve to move on.

Like the Super Bowl loss...

…a straight-up beating. Baltimore knew us cold.

As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about. --Shaun of the Dead

I thought so too

Much like that game the Patriots just didn’t have any plan to handle a very, very aggressive pass rush in the beginning of the game. Unlike that game, Brady produced turnovers instead of punts so the game was effectively out of reach when the offense started moving the ball some.

by hythlodaeus on Jan 10, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Nope. they lead the ball game in the superbowl in the 4th quarter, and ended up losing 17-14…peoples revisionist history of us getting crushed in that game is absurd….a 3 pt game isnt a crushing…yesterdays game where it was 24-0 after 1 and we never had a chance…thats a straight up beating

by takeit on Jan 11, 2010 7:30 AM EST up reply actions

I agree that the games were different.

What I mean is that the Giants beat us straight up. There was no trickeration or controversy; it was a credible win, not an accident. Now, Baltimore solved us to a much more tragic extent, clearly.

There was no misdirection at all.

Litany of fail

1-10: Faulk draw in shotgun for one yard, eat up 30 seconds of game clock. Fail.
2-9: Randy Moss for 3 yards on a comeback, 30 seconds eaten up. Fail.
3-6: Edelman screen for 3 yards, 30 seconds eaten up. Fail.
4-3: 20 yard punt by Chris Hanson. Fail.

I can't even begin to fathom what we just witnessed

A stone-cold Tom Brady, a disappearing O-Line, no running game (Taylor? Maroney? Morris was receiving), atrocious play calling( Faulk up the middle EVERY first down????) I’m always willing to give the Patriots the benefit of the doubt and look at the positives, but right now I’m at a complete loss.

Not saying it won’t happen, but between Chung, Meriweather, Sanders and McGowan, that’s a fair few decent-to-good, young safeties in the squad.

it was a weird season, too inconsitent and up and down

i hope for more consistency next season. We need the better o-line play on both sides. the first play by the ravens offense just defined the game. The pats need to get healthy. THey seemed half-cocked one both sides. resign bodden and wilfork, get a olb and revamp o-line

by lololol on Jan 10, 2010 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Wow, I don't know which was more surprising

the way my Ravens played or the way your Pats did. That 1st quarter explosion and implosion (you guess which goes with which team) went a huge way to determining the outcome. The Ravens run game was just not stopped and until they were, we stuck with it regardless on how he played. His 4th quarter 1st down run was big and the defense played super in the trenches and secondary.

By far our best game of the season and showed the rest of the nation what we Ravens fans knew we could do if we put it all together.

Thanks for the vine and take care. Root us on to beat Indy and the Jets or SD! Peace.

Gresham?

I’d think about him in the second round, but a TE just isn’t important enough to our offense or anywhere near as dire a need as pass rushing OLB, RB, or CB to warrant using our first rounder.

by RSNexile on Jan 10, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Pats have taken a few TEs over the years in the first round

Nobody predicted Watson as a first round in 2004 because they already had Daniel Graham. Then nobody predicted the Pats would use a second and a third on TE when they had Watson, and then they did in 2006. Could happen, I suppose.

I’d think Watson’s good enough that they’ll use that pick elsewhere, though. The problems aren’t at TE.

the team need consistency on both sides

Vollmer to LT and light to RT. on the defensive side resign our CB since bodden is good and springs is better than any CB below him. the two holes we have in the dline seems to be finding a LB and DE opposite of warren and TBC. Also a new Offensive coordinator since for some reason brady moved the ball better when he was calling his own shots rather than in the huddle.

mathew.40, it isn't a ban, it's a warning.

Someone was trolling and you started swearing at them. I appreciate the sentiment, but it’s my job to get rid of the bad eggs.
Just flag them, move on, and I’ll clean up after them.

I really like your contributions. Don’t stoop to their level.

It looks like THE CITY OF CHAMPIONS

is regressing.
Red Sox without Bay and Manny, behind the Yankees again.
Celtics struggled without KG last year, they did not repeat last year.
Bruins are struggling, they were favored to win the NHL Eastern Conference.
Let’s hope this is not a trend with Boston’s sports teams failing since the glory years of 2005 (Patriots), 2007 (Red Sox) and 2008 (Celtics).
You should’ve hired Charlie Weis back as offensive coordinator!

Don't you worry about Boston sports, young man.

If the Chargers pull a Norv Turner in the playoffs again, what will you look to? How many prospects you’ll get when the Padres trade A-Gon?

The Celtics just need to get healthy and they have as good a chance as any team to win it all this year.

And you can just go on thinkin’ what you wanna think about the Red Sox. Bay won’t be missed. I am not big on predictions, because anything (injuries) can happen, but I would not be surprised for this team to bust 100 wins, easy.

The City is not done yet.

also i seems people tend to forget it’s brady’s first year back form injury, which might account for some inconsistency. pats will definately be better next year

so our 5 wr corp looks good like 07…moss, wes, tate, elderman and a good FA WR

I want...

…Steve Breaston from the Cardinals and Jason Avant from the Eagles. Both of them. Why? Because it would be solid. Let’s say Welker isn’t back for a while. If Moss’s back is still iffy, he’s not a top tier WR- just a field spreader. Top tier WRs spread the field WHILE making plays. Moss just spreads the field in his current condition. Avant and Breaston can both produce as true #2s while Welker is healing and Edelman is in the slot.

He *looks* like he does, but I don't think it's the reality

He converted a first down on what looked like a jog, at one point. He loped infield, cleared off his man, then loped outward. It looked really slow, until you realised that on both the in and the out, he actually was free twice. He looks slow and covered, but he really isn’t.

Jogging Flanker != taking play off

Not all flanker routes are run at full speed.

You can’t expect someone who is on the field for 40-50 snaps to run a 40 yd dash on each one. Moss is on the field nearly every offensive snap. So you design plays that allow them to literally rest between go patterns.

On slants, hooks and crosses you also have to manage space or you overrun your route right into other coverage. And if his job is to end up blocking downfield for a run play or a pass to someone else, its critical that he gain position and setup his man to block them out of the play – not drag them full speed into it.

Condolensces

I was truly surprised by what the Pats did/didn’t do today. Mostly I was surprised that Brady wasn’t able to test the secondary. Reading your comments, looks like your O-Line was mostly to blame, but I wonder how much Brady’s injuries came into play. Either way, it still says a lot that you went 11-5 this year, won the division and did so with a QB returning from devastating knee injury and a buttload of changes on the D.

I anticipate your team will be stronger for it next year… guess we’ll experience it firsthand sometime during the sweeps period!

Hill, we're ALL not that bad

Every team has their overly passionate idiots and we at The Beatdown don’t endorse trolling behaviors. You got beat today by a team that took advantage of the off day you guys had for a change. You won’t have to do much to be right back in the playoffs next year. Just stay healthy and if you put Edelman and Welker out there at the same time, watch out!

Good luck and thanks.

True, but the Colts fans are very classy

When the Pats got beaten during the season by the Saints, you’d think that the Saints had vanquished a Pats team that went around beating crippled nuns or something, given their comments. When the Colts won, they were respectful and complimentary.

If the Raven’s fans who came on here were all like you, I’m pretty sure the Ravens would get a lot more Pats fans. They’re not, so the Pats aren’t. The “hope they break Brady’s legs” thing just cements it.

In saying that, good luck for the rest of the season.

Everyone's a littler homeristic...

…he’s homeristic to the point of insanity. He loses all sense of humor when it’s at the Colts’ expense. He attacks everyone who might not praise the Colts. He’s extremely knowledgeable, but that impedes him from seeing from a non-Colts point of view. He’s lucky he has the likes of Cassie, Shake and Angels who are able to hold a more reasonable conversation/debate.
