09 the year that was

well, now that the dust has settled and things are coming into shape for the Patriots this off season. I felt it would be nice to just sum up the season and its high points. Right before the season started the Pats trade away Seymour. I felt at the time this made the team better 3 years from now, but what about striking while the Iron is hot theory? There is always a window of opportunity with any team to win a championship. I felt before the season started that the defense was average and the offence was exceptional. The offence would makeup for some of the inefficiencies of the defense. Make the playoffs maybe the SB. If we got hot at the end of the season maybe we roll to #4 in the decade. The first 4 games where like watching the Pats of the mid to late 90ies. Competitive but not dominate. Unfortunately this was a seasoning year replacing 6 starters and bringing in 11 rookies. Most of the season we would see our offence sputter and be inconstant, our defense passable at best and like a cheese cloth for other offences. Realistically could we have hoped for more? Yes, should we have expected more, NO. As the season wore on an we played some of the dregs of the league it appeared that things where rounding into form and we would be very competitive. Alas the final 4 games proved that "they are who we thought they where"-RC. The Pats were a team that could score and couldn’t stop a team if there life depended on it. Ever since the Tyree catch, the Pats defense has given up more 1st downs on 3rd and long then I could remember from the championship years of 00-04. Yes we had injuries, one that will shape at least half of next year or more. That comes with the NFL, you play you get hurt, no exceptions. For a "Bad year" winning the division and 10-6 record not too shabby. Ask Cleveland Browns Fans. On to the draft and hope of a new year and a new attitude for the defense.
