Patriots Draft Wish List
This is my first post, so try not to be too hard on me.
Looking forward to the draft, I think the Patriots most pressing need is more playmakers, both offensively and defensively. We have no real playmakers at RB, other than beloved, but aging Kevin Faulk. At WR, Moss disappears too much, Welker will likely be out part of the season, and Edelman is still transitioning from college QB. The defense sorely lacks playmakers, (anyone else miss Asante Samuel?) both in the secondary and up front. We have no pass rush to speak of, except the reborn Tully Banta-Cain. Basically, the defense needs help. Everywhere.
Potential draft picks:
Eric Norwood LB, South Carolina: Having attended virtually every Carolina home game in the last 5 years, I have seen the impact of Eric Norwood up close and personal from the day he arrived on campus. He brings intensity on every play, and he has the versatility Belichick craves. He started out as a defensive end, and switched very successfully to linebacker. He would provide the pass rush the Patriots so desperately need (SEC's active sack leader), and is capable of stopping the run. 254 career tackles, 29 career sacks.
CJ Spiller RB, Clemson: Spiller likely won't be around by the time the Patriots 22nd overall selection comes, and I don't think they are going to move up, but i can still hope right? Spiller reminds me of the Titans explosive Chris Johnson, explosion i would love to see in a Patriots uniform. Spiller owns over 7,400 career all purpose yards and 50 TDs, including 3,547 rushing yards and 32 TDs and a sick 5.85 average yards per carry. Spiller would help what was an anemic group of kick returners this year, with an FBS record seven career kick return TDs. He also can catch the ball, with 1,420 career recieving yards. I would love to see someone like Spiller, who is a threat to score everytime he touches the ball, in the backfield with Brady.
Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State: At 6'2", 210 lbs, Dez Bryant is a big, physical wide reciever that would be the perfect complement to and eventual replacement for Randy Moss. Bryant doesn't have elite speed, but he is a great possession reciever who would certainly provide an immediate boost to a top heavy recieving corps. Would help Brady out on 3rd down and in the Red Zone.
Brandon Graham DE/OLB, Michigan: With 29.5 career sacks, Graham would certainly help the Patriots pass rush. Also led the nation in tackles for loss. Was first defensive player in Michigan history to be named team MVP twice. Has questions as to whether he can drop back into coverage. Has a motor that never quits, and has impressed at the Senior Bowl.
Jerry Hughes DE/OLB, TCU: Hughes is a freak of an athlete who actually played running back in high school. A 2 time All-American, he recorded 26.5 sacks the last two seasons. Like all the linebackers I have listed, Hughes is smaller than the typical Belichick linebacker. But as the league moves more and more to a passing league, undersized linebackers (Elvis Dumervil, Lamarr Woodley, Clay Matthews) who can get after the quarterback are enjoying tons of success. Jerry Hughes could bring that success to the Patriots.
Toby Gerhart RB, Stanford: Gerhart isn't the fastest back in college football, but his bruising running style was very effective last season (1,871 yds, 27 TDs). Many of us still recall painfully 4th and 2 against the Colts, but if not for a Maroney fumble on the goal line earlier in the game we would likely have had a comfortable lead. Gerhart may not gain a ton of yards, but he could provide a battering ram with a nose for the Endzone that Laurence Maroney has not, and i think will not, become.
Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma: Despite missing his senior season to injury, Gresham is considered one of the top if not the top TE in the draft. Could become the athletic pass catching tight end we envisioned when drafting Ben Watson. Had 66 receptions, 950 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior. The Patriots have yet to find a pass catching tight end to rival the other elite AFC teams, (Dallas Clark, Antonio Gates, Todd Heap). Gresham could be that guy for the Patriots, but with so many other needs, the Patriots might not want to draft him as high as he may go.
Brandon Ghee CB, Wake Forest: At 6'0" 189, Ghee is big enough to make scouts happy. Ghee is a very good tackler, wouldn't be a liability in run support. He doesn't make many interceptions, only one in his career. However he has a reputation as a fairly consistent cover corner. Had 8 pass deflection in 2009. Ghee may not be a great corner, but I would prefer anyone over Jonathon Wilhite.
Jason Pierre-Paul DE, South Florida: Only one year of major college football for the DE, but has tremendous upside. Very athletic, 6'6", 260 lbs, Pierre-Paul has a unique blend of size strength and athleticism coaches crave at DE. Could fill the hole left when Richard Seymour was traded to Oakland. 6.5 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss. Could potentially be a great second round pick for the Pats.

Jason Pierre-Paul isn't a 3-4 DE. 3-4DE need to be 290+lbs and they are usually DT in college football
why do people compare Woodley and Matthews to Elvis?. Elvis is 5’11 while the other two is at least 6’2 and have 30 lbs to their size.
for me n BB, 3-4 olb’s has to be @least 6’2 and 250lbs min. just like vrabel, colvin, thomas, TBC.
Ghee’s draft stock has been dropping. i rather take the CB Wilson from Boise State…plus he can return kicks and punts.
also no mention of any o line picks or d-line picks?
Neal is old, Nick ’ i can’t block a marshmallow’ kazcur sucks @ RT. Jarvis Green isn’t the answer to the 3-4DE though he is a good backup just like M. Wright .
anyhow my 1st rd pick is either a 3-4olb or Jared ortick 3-4DE Penn State (he can pass rush and is a good run stopper) or Lupati kid from Idaho. Lupati can play all 5 positions on the o line.
for the 2nd round picks, i would take a RB, T, G and a 3-4 DE or even a 3-4NT if they don’t sign Wilfork.
if u look @ BB’s 1st and 2nd round picks from the past 10 yrs, most of his picks have been towards the trenches of each lines.
We have Tate coming back nxt year and i believe if we pick up a FA WR or two, offensively, we are set with Moss, Tate, Edlerman.

Considered putting Odrick up, but didn’t know that much about him. I’m not sold on Brandon Tate being healthy enough to produce, and though obviously I like Edelman, I don’t think he is ready to be the #2 guy next year.
Lupati sounds like a solid guy, hadn’t heard of him before you mentioned him.
Concerns about Brandon Tate
Mike Reiss thinks the knee he hurt during the season was the opposite knee from the one he injured in college.
I believe he had an ACL tear, but am not 100 percent sure of that. I don’t know the expected recovery, but considering he went on IR in November, that would give him 8-9 months to training camp. I assume he should have a chance, barring any setbacks, of being there for the start of camp.
Keep the faith!
Tate was a projected 1st rounder

sounds like he wont be around for us to pick. and i dont see BB trading up to pick an offensive lineman. however, you have to like what the scouts are saying about him
If I trust BB to pick up someone useful at any position without trading up, it's OL
Look at Vollmer — everyone thought he was a reach late in the second round last year, and he looks like a franchise tackle of the future. Everyone thought Mankins was a reach when we got him, and though he had a subpar year (for him), he’s exactly the kind of brawler you want at guard.
BB gets value on the OL without having to pick early.
Bill hasn't whiffed on an O-lineman pick since 2000?
I’d say that’s a pretty good thing, considered. And I thought Klemm was more derailed by injury than actually ‘bad’ – something that’s a little hard to predict. Otherwise, he got Pro Bowler Mankins, Pro Bowler Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer (who for all money looks like a future Pro Bowler) and some useful guys like Neal in RFA, Kazcur as a third rounder, etc. He’s primarily built the O-line via the draft, so he rates his ability to scout decent guys. While NE fans might’ve complained about the O-line this year (I know I certainly did), they did only give up 16 sacks. Green Bay, Pittsburgh, and a half-dozen other teams would probably be delighted to have the New England line.

True
But he wasn’t quite as pummelled as Roethlisberger or Aaron Rodgers, either, who were sacked 50 times apiece in the regular season – I can’t imagine their ‘QB hit’ stats were any prettier. An honourable mention for Matt Cassel, who was sacked 43 times. Ouch ouch ouch.

Ben and Aaron...
…are much more mobile QBs. If they don’t get the pass off, it’s either a sack or they turn it into a run play (hence they have lower QB hit numbers).

I'd imagine Brady's are a little inflated because he's a pocket passer, too, though
case in point: the Terrell Suggs ‘hit’ that drew a penalty flag. Hah. Roethlisberger got hit a few times ridiculously hard on some of those scrambles – I distinctly remember him getting a helmet on what looked like directly over the spine when he was almost-but-not-quite sliding for a first down. I expected a flag – hitting the QB on the slide – but nothing.

Once you leave the pocket, the refs don't call the hits as much.
What surprised me was there were so many obvious helmet hits on Warner’s already damaged melon. Nary a one got called.

I hope BB does the same this year for OL
cause we need him to take Sergio Kindle at 22, and load up on D at 44 and 48. 53 either the best WR or RB available. I’m hoping B Graham is available in the second round.
Do any of you know if the Pats still have compensatory picks coming to them?
I'm hoping we get weatherspoon in the second.
he has that great upside.
witherspoon is projected 4-3olb not 3-4olb

oh, didn't know that.
what’s the difference though? wouldn’t a 4-3 LB be better in coverage and a 3-4 LB be better in stopping the run? Weatherspoon is great in both, and a great tackler.
here is a good article about 3-4LB vs. 4-3 LB
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/1/29/1283233/3-4-vs-4-3-linebackers
read the comments by hmills110 that starts with " i disagree……"
and the comments by kc_radh8r that starts with “it all depends on individual schemes”
both excellent points.

kindle...nay...he was my first rd pick but brandon graham is a better pick
kindle is a speedy rusher but graham is awesome. he can speed rush, bull rush, spin rush….remindes me of dwight freeney. plus he was was 4-3DE AND a 3-4 OLB @ the scUMich. he is 6-2 250lb.
other 1st rd pick is jared ordick. he played 4-3 DT and he is a 1st rd projected 3-4DE. he can rush and plays the run well.

Being a PSU Alum
I drool thinking about Odrick in a Pats Uniform. The guys has a motor and for just about all of his time at PSU hes been abusing double teams and still making his presence known. The only reason last year in the Rose Bowl he was quiet was USC pretty much triple teamed him. I think he or BGraham would be solid first rounders. The think with both of these are they are high motor guys, something that Hoodie loves.
I don’t see BGraham as a Woods or Crable type. Hes more like Woodley.

i want jared as my 1st and graham as my last 2nd rd pick

Thanks for putting this together, I really appreciate posts like this
I admit to not knowing too much about most college players but ya gotta love Michigan’s Brandon Graham’s attitude. He’s been unabashedly courting the Patriots and as a fan, I like that.

Good thoughts, but no I don't miss Asante Samuel.

Corey Wootton
He was playing while recovering from a knee injury this past season, but is still beast on the D-Line. I’d like to see the Pats go to him as a DE.
The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL
The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back
Nicklas Bergfors for the Calder Trophy!
Nice First Post
Welcome aboard. It’s always interesting to see how the stock of various players rises and falls over the next three months and how the Pats needs and interests will change depending on free agency. I’ll look forward to you revisiting your list as we get closer to draft time.

over jared ortick 3-4DE penn state. he is a copy of lammar wodley (and a dwight freeney light). i was pissed we never picked woodley 2 years ago.
plus if they sign wilfork, they still have warren and pryor as 3-4DE.
great thing about graham is that he will play 4-3DE-both strong side and weak side, and plays 3-4olb -both weak side and strong side. he was the only good player this year from u of michigan.
heck we can afford not to draft a 3-4 DE as a 1st rounder this year, esp when we have an oak 1st rounder nxt year and hopefully, pick cameron heyward 3-4DE from my school. the guy is a beast. And he is the son of nfl player- ironhead heyward.

The organisation was pretty high on McKenzie, from what I've heard
and if he pans out, a Mayo/Guyton/McKenzie ILB rotation will be as strong as anywhere, when they’re all healthy. The caveat on that is whether it’s the end of the road for Alexander as a special teamer and third-string ILB, they might hunt one down in the later rounds (think a Guyton-type guy with size and speed to play ST).

I don't see it this season
Unless someone offers a Randy-Moss-like trade again, in which circumstance the Pats would probably pick up a player in a position they would’ve used the pick on anyway – a win-win. There’s one too many holes to fill to start ducking and diving with picks this year, but I wouldn’t rule out jockeying around the draft-boards when they actually have guys in mind.
