Not a Pats fan, but as a Colts fan, this is an interesting game, with basically the Colts two rivals against each other

No, i'm rooting on whatever is best for the Colts
which would be a Charger win, which would get the Pats to 4-2, just like Indy.
ALthough, I really can’t lose in this game.

LOL
I remember the 08 season where if the Jets won we would be in the playoffs and if they lost we wouldn’t. Brett Favre threw an interception (whoda thunk?) that basically ended the season for both us and the Jets. Now that’s what I call “bittersweet!”
Wouldn't you be best served by the Pats winning the division...
and thus having the Colts have a shot at two Wildcards and not just one? :)

Most Colts fans are pretty confident of us winning that division
we are tied for first, and we get Houston in our building after the bye. The Titans don’t scare me.

Also, why am I to assume the Pats get a wildcard if they lose this game
4-2 is nice, but they have a tough schedule ahead.
EVH+DLR=BFFs........ God I Hope So!!
There's a general consensus that the AFC East will have a wildcard go to it
Either the Jets or Pats, and some people will even throw the ‘Phins into the mix for one. By no means guaranteed of course, but it’s happened enough recently that it’s not exactly implausible.

I'm not saying that it will or won't happen
but I think it is better for the Colts to get another team with 2 losses. Of course, the Colts can do it themselves, because they play the Pats, but getting a loss to another top competitor is probably better than teh Chargers losing another game.

The party line has been that the loss of Kassim Osgood is bigger than anyone could’ve realized. However, just as big of an impact is that Mike Tolbert and Jacob Hester (the two best guys behind Osgood last year) are not starting on offense and therefore less effective on special teams. The team has started bringing in new guys to fill those roles and they’ve done okay, but it hasn’t been completely fixed overnight.

Makes me glad Belichick keeps drafting guys and signing free agents who are ST studs.
Devin McCourty had 7 kick/punt blocks in college, Pat Chung was the Oregon Ducks special teamer of the year despite being an every-down defensive player in the LB/S Rover position, Dane Fletcher had two blocked kicks in college, etc.
The Pats have an excess of gifted STers; the Chargers are struggling to field any.

You mean...
besides the fact that they suck? There have been too many people shuffled around. It appears Kassim Osgood was hiding the fact that most of the guys running behind him weren’t as good as everyone thought they were. We’ve made some moves that should help in that regard, but I’ve prepared myself to expect ST to lose us one or two more close games by the end of the season. You might have even said it lost the game last week. Kaeding ‘slips’ on a field goal in a 3 point loss. The Chargers are just a cursed team this year. Two weeks ago Gates gets called for a holding penalty on an outside run by our slowest RB to move out of FG range. Usually the curse waits until the post season to rear it’s ugly head. Not this year. The curse is now.
Saw some numbers that intrigued me
Offense
YPG: 432.7 (1st)
Passing: 316.2 (1st)
Defense
YPG: 255.2 (1st)
Passing: 163.7 (1st)
Believe it or not folks, that is the Chargers numbers through 6 weeks. The #1 offense & defense in terms of yardage statistically in all of football. For any other team, that kind of production from both sides of the ball in terms of stopping teams from accumulating large totals, but also producing large numbers on offense would make for more wins.
Are the numbers above indicative of what this team should be besides the record it is, or have there just been bad losses all around?
I don't think so. Homey don't play dat.
"It’s just relax. Don’t get too hyped. Just relax – Woo-sa." - Patrick Chung
There are a few flaws to that
Primarily, their opposition has lost six drives that could have accrued yards because of six special teams touchdowns. There goes 6 potential possessions in which they could have gained yards. I don’t doubt that the Chargers offense is that good, but their defense, imo, is nowhere near as good as their yardage numbers would indicate. The second factor is that they haven’t played a great offense yet. The Pats are the best offense they have played so far.
EVH+DLR=BFFs........ God I Hope So!!
Mostly true
Although the Chargers offense is actually that good. However, the high yardage totals have a lot to do with the team being forced to throw deep when they’re much prefer to just run the ball.

Using the Football Outsider adjusted stats
San Diego’s D is still a respectable 5th overall (2nd against pass, 13th against the run).
San Diego’s O is a respectable 4th overall after adjustments (2nd in pass, 14th in rushing).
In terms of efficiency, SD’s offence is 3rd most efficient, their D is 3rd most efficient, but their special teams is 32nd in the league. That tallies to an overall 11th rating.
(New England’s O is 1st, D is 27th, and special teams 6th; 1st most efficient overall).
Big difference here being special teams. Considering the last two games for the Pats turned on big ST plays, this could be where the Pats really gouge the Chargers.

I see the Pats gouging the Chargers
with their offense. When a team scores on a kickoff, those yards are erased and our offense gets the ball back. A lot of our stats are due to the fact that we’ve lost defensive possession or we turned the ball over and gave the other team a short field.
While we’re pretty damn good on offense, our defense is inconsistent. We don’t seem to ever be able to get a three and out when we really need one. The Chargers are all over the place. The only thing we have going for us is that we’ve been dominant at home. Two home games, two early exists to the parking lot early in the 4th quarter.
Our pass defense is actually pretty good
Jammer and Cason (aside from last week) have been playing really well. We play the run well for about 3 quarters. Then we get worn down and just can’t make a stop when we need to. It’s annoying in the worst way.
The numbers are certainly indicative of what the team should be, but don’t forget about the competition. The teams the Chargers have played thusfar have been the Chiefs, Seahawks, Jaguars, Rams, Cardinals and Raiders. The team should be 5-1 at least.

by John Gennaro on Oct 19, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions
That's, negative ten
The first question is important. I hope they don’t force Gates into action if he isn’t healthy, like they did in the 2007 AFCC game. I know Teddy Bruschi was a good LB, but there’s no way he covers Gates one on one unless Gates is hobbling on one leg. Putting him out there as a decoy didn’t work then and it won’t work this Sunday. I still can picture TB putting his hand out there blocking that pass in the end zone intended for Gates. The horror…
Anyway… I digress. I guess we’ll find out later today if Gates practiced, was limited, or if he sat. With Floyd out, Gates is going to be key. Patrick Crayton played very well last week and I’m hoping that’s something we’ll see more of in the future. Buster Davis is fast and talented, but I just don’t trust him to win it in a close game. Maybe Legadu plays. Either that, or Ryan Mathews has his first breakout game of the season. So, what I’m saying is I hope Gates is playing near 100%.
As for the 2nd question… as bad as the Chargers have been on the road, they’ve played equally well at home. They’ve won at home by an average of 28 points. So, I say the Patriots win by -10.
If gates is there, it is probably Dane Fletcher that will target him.

Okay...
What do you think of the direction the front office is taking this year? I’m talking about the draft, how they handled the Jackson and Merriman situations, ect.
I agree with how Jackson and Merriman were handled. I understand why they handled McNeill the way they did, but I’m not sure I’d do the same.
I agree with almost everything the team did in the draft, especially moving up to get Mathews, but the rookie class looks a little disappointing because one guy is on IR (Donald Butler, ILB) and two other guys have had a hard time getting on the field (Darrell Stuckey and Cam Thomas) because the veterans in front of them have suddenly turned it on.

What do you guys assess your gameplan is, possibly w/o Floyd and Gates?
Gates may be a go, albeit an unhealthy one, but Floyd is a little less clear.
Don't cut your locks Tom Terrific!
I imagine the Chargers will try and establish the run with Mathews and Tolbert. Crayton isn’t a terrible replacement for Floyd, assuming Naanee is back at #2 (he missed the Rams game), but the passing game will work easier if the run game gets going.
The Chargers have 2 very-good receiving TEs besides Gates that will probably be used as the 3rd and 4th receivers a bunch.

Inconsistent is a better way of describing him. He flashes his talent around but it’s hard to say if he’s going to be great. So far, no. He’s just inconsistent. He’s made some amazing catches and dropped some others that make you scratch your head. This is his first year with steady playing time so I imagine he’ll only get better.

I can’t imagine a more taxing position to play. All that weight on those knees with equal weight pushing back on you. They must have a totally different threshold for pain than everyone else. I remember reading an article once saying NFL linemen have an average life expectancy of 55 years old or something like that.
I observed a bunch of the linemen at Kevin Faulk's charity softball game
and when their names were called for them to come out of the dugout to be introduced, none of those guys could run. It really was an eye-opener for me. They were all thighs and calves and kind of shuffled out to the mound, but none of them had a natural running motion. They’re built to stay stout while ‘trucks’ try to run through them dozens of times per game and I can’t even begin to imagine what those collisions do to the body.

None of the rookies outside of Mathews has really seen any time on the field.
Mathews struggled with holding onto the ball and injuries in his first few weeks, but both of those issues appear to be behind him. His skills as a runner are clear as day when he gets the carries (I believe he has the 6th best YPC in the league). He has incredible potential.

He’s averaging 5+ YPC and he can catch the ball. He’s fast and physical. He looks a little like LT running to the edge, only he’s bigger and pounds people in the open field. Shaun Phillips
He’s been a top 4 3-4 OLB this season. No doubt about it; he’s up there with Matthews, Ware and Wake. Do you think this production is sustainable?
Also, I’ve heard really mixed reviews on Stephen Cooper and Larry English, what are your thoughts?
Finally, how does your OL look. I know that Jeromey Clary is basically a revolving door…think that continues this game?
by Ethan Hammerman on Oct 20, 2010 12:05 AM EDT reply actions
well..
Phillips has been very very good this year. he did lead the league in forced fumbles last year with 7, as well as 7 sacks and has always been somewhat underrated. i dont think hes one of the top 5 pass rushers (hes top 10 easily) but hes a very complete and athletic player.
Cooper has a ton of heart and is a smart player but almost everyone agrees that Brandon Siler is the better player and should be starting ahead of him.
English is injured but even before then he really hadn’t shown anything. he looks like a bust IMO.
About Clary, yes he is a bad RT. Charger fans are hoping (and i believe the coaching staff will, but probably not this week because there is very little time) that Brandon Dombrowski, who started at LT when Mcneil was out and did a superb job will move to the RT position. Hes a very underrated player and is much better than Clary in ever facet.
These pretzels are making me thirsty!
Really?
I haven’t heard rave reviews about Dombrowski…a superb job? Would you happen to have any blocking stats on him?
Thanks for your answers though.
by Ethan Hammerman on Oct 20, 2010 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Dombo is good
against power rushers, but struggles with speed rushers. He’s actually better than McNeill at run blocking. If you go to the BFTB page, you’ll see 2 different posts: “Pacstud’s O-line analysis” and “Superduperboltman’s D-line analysis” which will tell you a lot about the O-line and Defensive front 7.
Defensive coach tells me: "Give the pass rush 5 seconds of good coverage on those receivers, they'll get it done!" Then he tells the front 7: "You've got 3 seconds to get pressure, the secondary can't cover all day!". Mutually dependent motivation. It works.
by Superduperboltman on Oct 20, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Dombo has all the physical ability to be a top-flight LT
I wouldn’t say that he struggles with speed rushers any more than other LTs do. Dombo’s looked great for the most part, with all the physical ability needed to play the position.
The only catch is consistency. While a guy like McNeill is so valuable because he is so consistent, Dombo still has a couple plays per game where he isn’t playing as well. The general consensus is that the consistency is something that comes with experience and that given some time, he should easily become a starting-caliber LT.
Dombo struggled more when he played some games at RT last year, though. We’re not sure if he’s playing as well as he is because of the switch to LT or because he now has that extra year of experience. He’s on the bench for now since McNeill is back (having to choose between the two is a great problem to have) but there are whispers that they might start trying him out at RT (during the bye week practices would be my guess). That said, Clary is not as bad as most Chargers fans would say… he’s an above average RT who’s been surprisingly solid.
Will McNeill be playing?

He should play better this week
Last week he played all but two snaps. Pretty good considering it was his first game back and he skipped camp. However, we gave up around nine sacks, at least one or two from his side.
Clary is definitely the weak link. Everyone in SD is hoping Dombroski takes his spot on the right side.
Here's one
In the opinion of Bolt’s fans….. When is the San Diego passing attack most vulnerable? On aggressive blitz packages or when the defense drops 8 back in coverage?
Every year before this, neither could be called a weakness. This year, the aggressive blitz packages seem to be working far too often.
Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.

Unfortunately
I have to agree with you on this. Rivers seems to be holding the ball a little longer. He used to have three jump ball options, Gates, VJax, and Floyd and would torch the blitz by just throwing it up at the guy in single coverage (sometimes even into double). Last week, with none of those on the field, it’s no wonder he was sacked so many times.
Two questions about offense
How big of a blow will it be if Gates can’t go?
Is Rivers playing that much better than he has in years past?
Rivers is still playing lights out
He looks a little more human this year because his receivers aren’t getting as much separation as he’s used to getting from them. In that regard, he’s playing better than ever because he’s doing more with less. Even with all the yards, we’d be much better on offense with VJax. Also, there have been some drops from guys who are getting their first dose of steady action. He’s been holding onto the ball a little since I don’t think the trust level is there yet with all of his WRs and that’s why the blitz has been working better this year than years past.
With Floyd out, Gates is HUGE. Gates has been having the best year of his career and that’s saying a lot. Crayton will have to step up. I think he was a big acquisition for us.

yeah that PI was bs...it was mutal interference and @ best it should have been a facemark penalty...seems the Zebras screwed 2 AFC West teams- Broncos and the Chiefs

no such thing as a facemask while the ball is in the air.

The KC game penalty is so overrated
Yes, it definitely was not DPI, but that type of OPI rarely gets called, especially that late in games. Johnson did still catch the ball. My expected call there would be no penalty at all, which would result in the exact same play happening, same catch, same yardage gained.

What happened to Jacob Hester?
I’m a Patriots fan first, but LSU fan second, and I have not heard anything about him this year. Guy was amazing at LSU.
He's come along slowly
It’s been a real roller-coaster of a career for him, and I think that’s because he wasn’t quite sure what he was on the team (RB or FB or Special Teamer). This season they essentially handed him the FB job and said “You’re a FB”, and he’s been able to dive into it 100% and it shows. Outside of a missed block here or there in pass protection, he’s been awesome this season. A definite bright spot on the team and one of the reasons the running game has improved from last year.

How would you say the Chargers safeties have done in pass defense this year?
Obviously, Minnesota will hire John L. Smith to be their next head football coach.

Since our pass D is ranked #1
I’d say they are doing well. I think we’re hurting with Steve Gregory out on suspension. We gave up too many yards to Sam Bradford last week. I think it gets worse with Brady this week. Weddle is pretty good but I think they tried to have him do too much with Gregory out last week and we got burned pretty badly. Hopefully, for us, they make adjustments this week and play better.
More a question about the fanbase than the team.
But what is the confidence level of the Charger’s fanbase going into this game ?
What is the confidence level like overall ?
I know a lot of times, in recent years, the Chargers have struggled early before turning it on late.
I also know their 4 losses were on the road, and in the 2 home wins they have they won by an average of something like 28 points.
Are you guys shaken by the inconistencies ? OR remaining confident because of the silver linings ?
Hope this isn't regarded as a classless question...
I’m not trying to imply that you guy’s shouldn’t be confident. And I do believe the Chargers have a lot of talent, and are playing a lot better than their record would say.
I just know confidence levels in fan bases waver, and I’ve seen the Patriots fanbase really high after the Bengals win, and then really low after the Jets loss ( ANOTHER ROAD LOSS ? 2009 ALL OVER AGAIN ? etc. ) and then go back to high again after the last couple wins. I’m curious as to how your fanbase has reacted to the current season thus far.

And you didn't even mention the Bills game...
and that was a win that most Pats fans treated as a loss (I didn’t; they won) because of how the defense was basically walked on…even though it was a brand new QB they were facing and it was only Week 3.
I don't think so. Homey don't play dat.
"It’s just relax. Don’t get too hyped. Just relax – Woo-sa." - Patrick Chung
legitimate question in my book
I was a bit wary of the Patriots own schedule this year (home-away-home-away…), considering last year’s can’t-win-on-the-road affliction.
Keep the faith!
