A Trade I'd Love To See

Steven Jackson to the Patriots.  Seriously, the guy has been wasting his career away for a franchise that has been consistently rebuilding and now he is being asked to wait some more as they bring along Sam Bradford.  Watching the 4th quarter last week of that Rams game, they didn't use him at all!  So frustrating...he'd be the PERFECT back for this offense moving forward, a la Dillon, and would deliver everything that Maroney never did.  We should use some of our picks to bring S-Jax to New England.

I'm no expert on NFL contracts, but it seems like he's going to have the last couple years of his contract voided (he is the highest paid back in the NFL) and for his final contract, he'll probably be a little cheaper.

Dude is durable (sleeping in an altitude tent this season), fit (gained muscle weight this season and maintained 5% body fat) and has never had a chance to be on a good team.

Not when he's the crutch to a young QB

The Rams don’t have a TE worth much in the passing game, so Steven Jackson is their primary underneath/checkdown receiving option, too. Take Steven Jackson away from Sam Bradford, and the guy would have nobody.

rams should be a lot better next year.

sam bradford is already doing very well on the team. they just need an L and WR on the offense.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

This would be a dream come true

But would most likely almost never happen.

Obviously not this year as well, as we’re past the deadline. If he ever became a free agent, or was ever on the block for some reason, of course you go and get him. However I don’t see that as anything more than a very remote possibility.

I'm not sure how Steven Jackson's contract would be cheaper

The guy’s one of the few workhorse RBs around in the league, he does everything very, very well (look at his receiving stats, and he’s as productive as a mid-level TE on top of his rushing), and he’s a fantastic pass-protector for a young (and very, very expensive) QB.

He’s far too valuable to let walk to the Rams, because he basically fills 4 roster spots by himself – primary RB, 3rd down back, short-yardage back, checkdown receiver.

Ya, RBs with that talent usually don’t go on the market, so when they do they get overpaid, not really our thing i guess. I think Belichick is almost scared to use a low 1st rounder on a RB after Maroney.

Also, I don’t see him as an ideal fit for Woodhead. Jackson wants to be on the field every down.

Anyways he is still an absolute beast and if they could make it work it would be amazing, but I really think they will stick with BGE and Woody and blow up everything else; maybe bring in a more traditional fullback over Morris? Also will look to draft someone on Day 2. Can’t stand the Mark Ingram mocks really. Doesn’t have the speed/vision.

It's always been my opinion

That if the Pats could add one offensive skill player in the league, this guy would be the biggest upgrade. His versatility would make BoB’s mouth water, and if only he came cheaper I would be glad to welcome him aboard.

by 108 on Nov 29, 2010 2:05 AM EST reply actions

Still not sure BoB knows how to color with all of the crayons he's got.

But he’s doing much better. The picture is certainly not always pretty, but it is getting more colorful.

True

Keeping in mind he is still very wet behind the ears as an OC. But just as he’s opened up the playbook with the new TEs, you have to think adding a back like Steven Jackson would get the screws turning in his head. We could put him on the field with 2 TE and we would be exceedingly dangerous both with the pass and run. Imagine a better BJGE, but you can split him out wide. As a defense, what personnel do you put on the field?

by 108 on Nov 30, 2010 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

Having Steven Jackson would basically have the playbook available for Woodhead and the playbook for BJGE...

but without substitutions, and only taking one roster spot.

Downside is..

He’s had a TON of carries behind a truly awful offensive line. He’s pretty beat up.

by satsunada on Nov 30, 2010 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

Mhm

I wouldn’t mind him in a three-back rotation, at least. Woodhead is great as a RB/WR/Special teamer – he’s Darren Sproles without the KR ability but who can tackle. Benny is limited in terms of what he can do, but he can do it really well. He’d be a great north/south RB to pair with Jackson – Benny’s already shown he’s productive when sharing snaps with Woodhead.

Having Benny and Woodhead means Jackson can be rested appropriately and not suffer the beatings he does now. Jackson could be Fred Taylor, except he actually would get on the field.

Sure its not impossible . . .

But in my opinion it is.
1) Too big name of a player. Team has started to come into its own. They like being behind the shadows so let it be.
2) Crucial to STL. Bradford has amazed me honestly. Kinda reminds me of Matt Ryan actually. Balanced offense is necessary for them and Jackson provides it.
3) I like draft picks. Add Steven Jackson, lose draft picks even with BB there to make them deals.
4) Eh . . . I like me some BJ (lolski)

by mkhural on Nov 29, 2010 2:30 AM EST reply actions

hmmm

i like BJGE, want to see him get 20+ carries a game for a few to see what he could do with it.

But Jackson is great. I’d rather see us get an elite pass-rusher than get him though, someone that the offense has to fear like they do wilfork, “the pass-rushing ying to wilfork’s runstopping yang” if you will! A true differencemaker that makes everyone else better and improves our passrush 10-fold. A guy like: mario williams, cameron wake, clay mathews, freeney, john abraham, julius peppers, terrell suggs

someone like that

I wouldn't mind a guy who's merely a bookend to Cunningham

I count at least three interceptions that he’s caused by getting an arm on the QB as he’s passing (Henne x2, Manning x 1), and at least one game he’s had a significant part in winning outright (Miami).

He hasn’t been shown up in the run game or been blown out by blockers, so even though he’s not racking up major sacks he’s contributing where it matters – on the field. Get another 3-down linebacker just like him for the other side, I’d be rather happy.

Instead of another edge setter though

I’d like an OLB that’s more in the Vrabel mold. Cunningham is more DE than LB, so maybe his opposite is more LB than DE? A guy with good pass rushing skills, but also effective in coverage.

But yeah, stats are for losers, and sacks or no, Cunningham has had a very positive impact on the field this year. So next draft, when Belicheck calls up a player I haven’t heard of, no matter how much I’ve read up on the draft, I won’t complain.

I knew Bill knew something I didn’t when he took the OTHER Florida DE when everyone thought we should take Dunlap, who went with the next pick.

by 108 on Nov 30, 2010 3:02 AM EST up reply actions

Mike Vrabel was the best edge-setter the Pats had

McGinest was more of a pure pass-rusher, Colvin a pass-rusher too (and both played a lot of sub-package DE).

The other OLB I had on my radar pre-draft was Koa Misi, who went to that other Parcells/Belichick 3-4 in the ’Phins.

Misi’s 24 tackles (16 solo) and 4 sacks for 12 yards suggests I got that one quite right, ha.

Dunlap is getting better as well 10 tackles (all solo) 3 sacks (2 against the Jets) for 21 yards

Don’t know if any of them are better than our crew:

Cunningham: 24 tackles 19 solo 1 sack for 4 yards
Banta-Cain: 32 tackles 25 solo 3 sacks for 16 yards
Ninkovich: 41 tackles 25 solo 1 sack for 7 yards
Woods: 3 tackles all solo 1 sack for 3 yards in parts of just 2 games

I'm not too happy with Banta-Cain's penchant for giving up stupid penalties at crucial times

And I always have to augment Cunningham’s stats with the fact he caused three of the Pats interceptions, same as how Misi scored his own TD on a defensive play. It’s those extra ‘bonus’ plays that win games but don’t turn up on the stat sheet.

I'd like to see a list that had QB hits (likely somewhere) and pressures (probably doesn't exist).

Smart QB’s dump the ball rather than give up the sack (lost yards and a risk of fumbling).

That adds to incompletions and interceptions. Neither of which are credited to the pass rusher – though they should be.

Also blocked / tipped passes add to incompletions and interceptions, and are caused by the guys up front. They CAN get a PD from that, but I’ve seen them not get them quite a bit as well.

Personally, I’d rather have a guy that forced fumbles and interceptions over a guy that just got sacks. That puts the ball back into Tom’s hands. The sack just means they lost a down and some yardage.

Larry Fitzgerald

The Cards looked TERRIBLE last night. Fitzgerald obviously wants out and will demand not to be there next year. Whats wrong with trading the Pats first round pick for him? Pats still got Oaklands and Carolinas second (which shouldn’t be more than a few spots lower than the Pats first). Or maybe a second and a fourth?

Not that that’s good or bad, but she says it every time she sees the man. I’m not sure I could handle that for sixteen weeks – plus playoffs. Sigh.

the Pats are at the best with no name possession WR that allow Tom Brady to mange games

I would rather see the money and resource needed to get him to help our aging line or help our pass rush
