How freaking good is Matt Cassel?
Quarterback 1: 236 of 356, 23 TDs, 4 INTs, 105.8 ranking
Quarterback 2: 195 of 323, 22 TDs, 4 INTs, 99.7 ranking
Matt Cassel is ridiculously pimp this year. Like, seriously. I always thought of him as decent but definitely not 22 TDs and 4 INTs good.
Glad to see him succeeding though. He gave the Pats a year to remember despite coming cold off the bench. I don't want him to do MUCh better - tommy b still ahs to be regarded as #1 - but let's say 28 TDs and 10 INTs would be nice!

I remember, about a month ago
All the fantasy gurus over at yahoo sports imploring people to pick up Cassel, because the second half of the Chiefs season is a fantasy wonderland of defenses. So while I think he’s doing a great job, Take a look at the opponents he’s done it against, not to mention his epic garbage time performance vs the Broncos. He gets to play AFC West and NFC West opponents this year. Just like in 08.
I love the guy, but take his success with a grain of salt, since it’s against easy competition, and with the support of a good running game opening things up. Compared to Tom Brady, who faces a very tough schedule of passing defenses like the Colts, Steelers, Ravens, Jets, and Chargers. Not to mention, opposing teams are keying on Tom Brady first, and it’s him opening things up for the runners.
But yeah, regardless, those are great numbers and couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Personally I think that compared to his actual talent level, he’s performing as well if not better than TB12… obviously TB12 has a much higher ceiling though.
Chiefs seem like they SHOULD be better than they are with that double-headed beast of a run game and an absolute stud (finally!) in Bowe, as well as a Probowl quality Matt C.

Not that good.
Look at his schedule. They have played one team with a winning record at the time they played, and lost that one. But they did manage to beat the Browns, grrrrr.
You have to realize guys like Brady and Manning have done amazing things over their careers against mostly good teams due to the weighted schedule. But I wish Matt well.
The glass is at 50% of capacity.
Not throwing picks against even bad defences deserves some credit
There’s always that temptation if things are going your way to be too reckless and throw the ball into coverage. He’s got 22 TDs to suggest he’s throwing the ball pretty effectively, so the fact his interception count is so low suggests he’s not trying too hard to rip up shabby Ds at the expense of good QB play.
Basically, he’s not Jay Cutler.

I give him some credit.
I just said he wasn’t “that” good. Talk of MVP seems preposterous to me though, looking at who he has excelled against.
The glass is at 50% of capacity.
MVP seems excessive, but he should be in the Pro Bowl discussion.

...if he makes it past Rivers into the playoffs....
If not, Brady, Rivers, and Manning (who always gets in) at least are ahead of him. He might be an alternate.

so true babe
its really remarkable. i really do think theyre the two best QB’s ive ever seen, with only montana, young and marino can compare in my opinion, and marino is pushing it because the only marino i would put with that group is a young marino, who still never won nothing
Theyre just great. flat out.
Go look at who manning played in his magical season of 50 Td's
He feasted on bad teams with porous secondaries.
Meanwhile Brady's 50 were against the NFC East, and AFC North.
The Giants, Cowboys, and Redskins all were playoff teams that year (and the Eagles were pretty good).
The Steelers (playoff team) and the Ravens were also pretty good.
They also had the annual Colts and Chargers games.

I thought we knew already?
But these guys^ are right, his schedule hasn’t exactly been an epic gauntlet of defensive monsters. Having said that, he’s playing great this season. Also, it helps that his receiver have stopped dropping the ball so much. I believe the Chiefs lead the league last season in drops which definitely contributed to Cassel’s struggles at the time.
Deep in enemy territory
It's a lot to do with Dwayne Bowe and Tony Moeki.
Last season, and early in the year, Bowe was not a reliable receiver. Moeki was a rookie early this season. Now Cassel’s developing a rapport with his receivers and Bowe is no longer dropping passes. His O-Line is gelling. He’ll be good as long as the team continue to develops around him. He’s a legitimate NFL quarterback- while he may not be a Tom Brady, he’s still solid. He just needs a team around him and he didn’t have that last season.
to all those decrying his opposition…
should TB’s 6 TD performance vs the Dolphins in 07 be stricken from the record books? or his 6 TDs vs the titans last year?
by quadruple option on Nov 29, 2010 12:04 PM EST reply actions
Nobody said they should erase his stats
But I do not see how you could ignore the quality of the opposition when evaluating a player’s performance.
Deep in enemy territory
Not stricken from the record books, but take it for what it is.
6 TD’s against the Colts, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, Giants, Packers, Vikings (most years), Cowboys (most years), or Eagles means MUCH more than 6 vs the 2007 Phins (1-15), or the imploding Titans last year.
The only reason Tom didn’t have more scores vs the Titans is he was riding the pine. Hoyer scored, heck anybody who TOUCHED the football scored. They didn’t even show up for the game. Same as the 2008 Cardinals – the 2008 Super Bowl going Cardinals. They didn’t even show up for that game in Gillete. We embarrassed them, and they proceeded to play some pretty good football. Same happened last year with the Titans. Same happened this year to us with the Browns.
Sometimes those games are just outliers. They’re not indicative of the true strength of the team. Sometimes they’re indicative, but the team isn’t very good.
They are what they are, but they aren’t all that.

But then the trees would have died so needlessly, and the hot air would increase global warming.

that lectured us before handing back our midterms bemoaning the loss of the hundreds of trees wasted on our apparently horrible exams. Yeesh. She hated kids.
Keep the faith!
They are what they are...
…and they’re good at what they’re good at. They’re bad at nothing really, but they’re good at the things they do. They are what you make of them and we’re going to try and make the best out of the situation given to us. They’ve done some good things in the past and they’ve had some success, but they aren’t all that. and they’re a playoff caliber team.

I'm glad to see Matt have a chance to shine.
I hope they win the division out there. Then we can see the true strength of his team. Moreover, next year, he’ll face all the #1 teams in the AFC along with some much stronger divisions.
This year was a good year to cut his teeth, but next year he’s going to have to eat some meat.

At least now people can stop pretending that Brady is a system QB and 2008 proved something
since we see now Cassel himself isn’t just some normal back up QB and actually might be (altho not as good as his stat line) well above average.
I'm not sure how Brady ever got called a system QB...
He had Weiss’s dink-and-dunk, McDaniels-1 (dink-and-dunk with spread wrinkles), McDaniels-2 (5WR spread to Moss), O’Brien-1 (5WR spread with wrinkles), O’Brien-2 (dink-and-dunk with TEs).
Manning’s had that consistent playbook since day-1, yet not only does he not get called a ‘system QB’ like that’s a bad thing, he actually gets held up as the paragon of QB awesomeness because he ‘has his own system’.
Hypocrisy makes no sense…

This guy on cbssports.com
Always came out with numerous blog entries on why Brady was a system QB and Manning was better than Brady. Not one of the paid guys, just one of the numerous members of the site. His account eventually got banned though. Not for liking Manning but I believe for his account name.

never got that anyways lololol
Whats the big deal about a guy taking over a 16-0 team and leading them to 11 wins the next year?
if youre handed the keys to a ferrarri you dont need to be mario andretti to drive it, right?
not to mention cassel is pretty damn good anyways, and that proves that tommy is about 5 wins and 200 points scored better . thats a pretty damn big difference. if cassel took over a 13 win team from the year prior and led them to 8 wins, would that prove “brady is garbage”?
if youre handed the keys to a ferrarri you dont need to be mario andretti to drive it, right?
Arguably, you do. Else you try to do too much, too fast, and go all James Dean over 100 square feet of tarmac.
McDaniels deserved credit for that playcalling. He cut down the playbook to only the throws Cassel could make, and then bulked it up as Cassel got comfortable through the season. Cassel threw when he was comfortable – two 400 yards games – and didn’t throw when he couldn’t – 7 attempted passes in the last game against Buffalo.
Cassel now, however, looks like a legit QB. I just saw the highlights of the Chiefs last game; Cassel was spectacular. Long stripes to Bowe in coverage, very sharp slant passes, avoiding pass-rushers with spin moves and then making Brady-like throws on bad footing? I’d never seen Cassel playing so well, and I saw a couple of those 400 yard games.
On further review, Cassel’s legit. He’s making very, very good, difficult throws.

I was at the Chiefs-Browns game this season
Got harassed by large crowds of drunk Clevelanders for wearing my Cassel Patriots jersey. Good times.
But he didn’t look too stellar in that one. I’m really glad to hear he’s improved since that game. I also saw Vrabel in person afterwards, like up close. Humans shouldn’t be that tall.
